He actually dumbs stories way down. Deep, deep down. He has the same problem that Tim Burton has. He's an art director. Not a movie director. I'll admit that it's all entertainment and just a product. But, come on, his stories are pretty weak, his characters are boring. Less happened in Mike Mignola's original Hellboy comics, but they were more interesting. It wasn't just Mike's art. He knew where less was more. Del Toro just throws fireworks at the camera. He overdoes everything. I bought Hellboy. I really wanted to like it. I really wanted to like Pan's Labrynth. But the guy can't tell a story. Not to mention the fact that he likes to over-stretch his effects department, so all of the CGI looks like wax. |
