yes, Tom Cruise's character was supposed to be obnoxious in Tropic Thunder. But Tom Cruise made it especially awful. You could tell he did it just to reconnect with an audience he was losing - regain his hip factor (that he never had in the way he was trying to recoup.) That's why the scenes with him were especially grating. The role would have been handled better by John C Riley or John Voigt.

Two actors/actresses with great resumes of 2000 (and before) and their resume is impressive with terrific variances in their roles and film choices.
