TrekMovie featured some of my Director's Edition comparison images in an article. Check it out for links to the full gallery of the 170+ changes I found between the 2001 and 2022 versions!

Please, just go away. We all know the level of hard work that went into this.

The most egregious, hack update of the lot that we were all moaning about, they had it perfect in the 2001 DVD then they had to mess with it, making the whole scene unwatchable. Seriously, if you don't this isn't a huge problem, then maybe you're the one who needs to "go away".

It wasn't "perfect", the officer's lounge is in the wrong place, the nacelle shouldn't be where it is, the window is wrong, and the nacelle itself looks like a 2nd generation compressed single-frame GIF.

Since it's only been released digitally so far perhaps some additional edits will be made before the disc release in September to appease the upset fans. I loved the 2001 cut of the film, especially compared to the 1979 version, but neither were perfect, nor is the 2022 version. I think Paramount and the producers of the 2022 version made a good faith effort on this update. A film btw that most of the general public thinks very little of. I'm happy with the efforts on this because despite any flaws, then or now, it's still better than leaving the film to languish in obscurity.

My biggest gripes with the movie (aside from the officers lounge and starfleet HQ weirdness much discussed) honestly are the opening credits and the overall sound mix that greatly dampened the incredible score of the film. While the quality of the music mix is great, certain scenes just don’t have the same feel anymore due to the new sound mix. Plus certain spots its just sounds like the actors are in a closet with a mic stuck down their throat. While a new sound mix was definitely needed they messed with it almost too much taking me out of the movie I’ve known for almost 30 years (my first disc was the directors cut from 2001 and first viewing was the TV version as a kid).

One other note is that some of the new 4K effects added specifically to this version also are like a giant YANK out of the film. The first is when V’Ger come out of the cloud…it looks like a cheap swirl effect thats just miles behind what was even possible in 1978. The second is when V’Ger explodes right before enterprise emerges. Again another cheap swirly effect. Hell even the lighting bolts look worse now than in 2001. Like the credits certain effects just look like flat…lowfps cheapo effects.

Fein bragged in interview after interview about wanting to not rip people out of the film which is exactly what happened WAY too much. And it muddies what was some incredible coloring and clarity of the original film elements. It just feels like maybe there were too many cooks in the kitchen and the consistency is all over the place.

having now seen this version both on a TV Screen, and Theater Screen, I treasure the Theatrical Experience, however, being someone who dabbles in VFX, I did feel a slight tingle of embarrassment with a few shots. I of course am not going to say "Oh these guys did a shit job" because I do believe if they had been afforded more time to refine things, that it probably would have been better. the Lounge, well, nothing really left to say about it, I'm glad I had already seen this version of it before seeing it on the big screen, Rotowork is a B**ch and I don't envy whoever had the job doing it.

I always wish I would have had more time to make something look better, but then got to stop and go with what I got, and I'm not thrilled about people seeing less than my best. unfortunately that's how things tend to go in these situations.

of all of it, I do believe these were the ones I just shook my head at the most.

It's just too Bloody bright, I had been hoping for the shot to be brighter than the DVD version, but it's just so, well obviously just my opinion, I think the choice to make it so bright, and the over prominence of the yellow and the CG Plasticky looking reflectiveness is just a shame. but I respect that it was someone else choice to make.

and this extremity of this Teal coloring is just, well again, I respect that it was someone else's decision to make

Yup, that top one was when I realized I'd be hopping off the alleged DC bandwagon.

It's not that the top screenshot is too bright. It's that the cgi is not very good so the ship looks fake. If the cgi was better I wouldn't have a problem with the increased brightness.

Between shots like that and the totally unnecessary change with the room that made a scene that looked fine look terrible, I'm a lot less excited now about this release. If they needed more time, then why didn't they take it? We've waiting this long, what's another few months? If it's money, then skip some of it, if the cgi is going to be sub-par anyways.

Great. So instead now the room and view is "correct" but looks like crap. How is that an improvement? Unless you're a Star Trek hound and know everything about the Enterprise's layout, you will never realize it's the wrong room/view. I never did. But it looked good so for the vast majority of viewers, there was nothing apparently wrong with that shot, if they didn't know it was the wrong layout.

Now, the whole scene looks awful to everybody with eyes, so it doesn't matter that it's "correct".

The distortion effect added to the Klingon attack scene looks awful too. It isn't consistent with the production. It looks out of place. The 2001 DE got the distortion effect right.

And the shuttle taking off shot is a joke. These are amateur mistakes. I'm not a die-hard Star Trek fan, but I do enjoy the films and some of the series, and I've always been fond of TMP. This film deserved better considering how long we've waited for this to happen. It won't get another chance.

The best part for all the whiners is you're lucky it even got done at all, since Star Trek is not a huge seller on disc (TNG barely sold at all after al the money put into re-doing its FX).

So now you get what you get. Either buy it or not (we know everyone who's complaining will, they're just complaining to complain online).

Because it was rendered in 480p so of course it looks low quality

The problem with this attitude is that it lets people get away with low-quality work. Why shouldn't we ask for the best possible presentation and hold them to a higher standard? Why should we just shrug our shoulders and say it's good? Or in starmikes case, act like Parsons in 1984 and clap like seals for whatever scraps he gets served up

It just looks so fake and CGI compared to the 2001 DVD, which is so good it actually looks like a real model in a physical space. I'd rather they just AI upscaled the original shot at this stage

The top screenshots I think are a great example of overcorrecting. I don't think either shot looks great. I can see them being limited in 2001 on what they could accomplish but I think they went a bit too far in the 2022 version, Sometimes less is more.

The bottom screenshot I'm a little more forgiving of but I still wonder if any changes needed to be made to the original. The original effect still looks great imo. If it was just a color correcting change I think think they went a little too far towards blue. To be fair I didn't notice that dramatic of a color shift during my viewing.
