Default Panasonic DMP-BD55

Hey guys- I need your help:

I have never heard HD sound before, but I've been meaning to upgrade to HD Audio for some time now.. A new receiver with HD sound would cost me about $600 for a Denon... I have just found a Panasonic DMP-BD55 for $300 with shipping, and I don't know if I should just buy this and connect it to my Denon receiver through 7.1 analog? Would it be just as good?

Since I have never heard HD audio before, I am wondering how big of a difference there is.. You can click on my gallery to see my setup, and tell me if you think it would be worth it for me! I pretty much only watch BD movies, but I would like to know if the difference between lossy and lossless is apparent on all releases, and not just on Iron Man and TDK?

Thank you for your help
- Niels

for just a few bucks more you can get Panasonic DMP-BD80, I just picked one up at best buy for $299. I now have a Panasonic DMP-BD55 and DMP80 and the difference between lossy and lossless is notable on most soundtracks.

I have the BD-55. It decodes and feeds audio to my Denon AVR-887 via HDMI with the setup below. The sound it stellar. Significantly cleaner than Lossey encoding.

My only complaint is that there is not enough quality 7.1 BD's available.

Although the BD-55 is as good a unit as the reviews say, I agree with Bilt928, for the price I would move to the newer version, the BD-80.

Hi Nielsb90,

I own a Panasonic DMP-BD55K and it is connected to a Newcastle P965 PreAmp/Processor using the 7.1 analog connections. It is the only way which I can benefit from the new lossly codecs. So, the Panasonic is decoding the soundtrack and the sound is phenomenal. I can also say that the picture quality is also stellar.

Axiom Epic 80 - 600 in a 8.4 configuration powered by an Axiom A1400-8 amplifier.

You should just go for the Panny 80. Its newer, & in the world of BD player that equals better (for the most part anyway).

I guess there are no Best Buys in Denmark... A few posts up someone mentioned getting a Panny 80 for $300 bucks. Whats the price in Denmark compared to the 55?

Nope there sure aint I've lived in Tennessee for a year and I miss Best Buy! The best price online for the 55 is $540 and the best price for the 80 is $505!!!

I know it sounds strange that the 80 is ``cheaper´´, but thats the prices.. I used a site that compares all stores.. Not so cheap The one I am looking at is a used model, but I might be able to get it a little cheaper than that.. Maybe around $270...

The BD55 is a great player. Mine has played every disk I've tried in the nine months since I bought it, which is rare for BD models at this point in their development. The BD80 line is newer. But, it also has a problem of video freezing.

I use the BD55's analog outputs. Lossless audio sounds great. The lossy versions also sound better than the same audio on DVD. There's more room on BD and the lossy audio tracks are less compressed as a result.

I'd suggest getting the BD55.

If I order from the US, there is a very big chance I have to pay duty which will be expensive.. Also the shipping is quite expensive... Also the power plug thingy is different

I just dont know yet if it is worth to upgrade to HD audio... I already have DTS and DD and it sounds pretty good
