I really wanted C band satellite but our HOA forbid satellite dishes. We refereed to home C band satellite dishes as BUD's (Big, Ugly Dish). But they were really not that big, our Andrews C band dish at work (10M, about 33') left and 8M C and Ku steerable, right:

I wanted one of those in the worst way back in the day, but my wallet wouldn't allow it...

More content does not equal better content. My collection will always be far better suited to my tastes than any streaming service.

They are only free if you consider your time to be worthless.

I don't think they should. I don't think that any companies should have to continue spending money on products that are no longer profitable. But on the flip side I won't buy any products that require continual support to function.

With physical media I can watch all of my discs for the rest of my life and it won't cost any of the studios or distributors a cent.

Back in the day Heathkit offered a C-Band receiver in kit form but it was still several thousand. Had to get a new Heath catalog because I drooled so on the old one. The Heath was a Scientific Atlanta in kit form. I believe to this day the premiums still distribute only on C-Band. PBS added Ku distribution many years ago.

Heath info and my Wineguard 5100 for PBS (now with a quad LNB):

It's so funny that I would have drooled over an add like that back in the day...

Looking at it now, it's hilarious to see that couple casually sipping their ice tea in their backyard next to that monstrosity.. 😂

Box Office: ‘Top Gun 2’ Scores Record $86M Second Weekend, Hits $549M Globally - Hollywood Reporter 6/5

'Top Gun: Maverick' is enjoying the lowest drop in history for a movie opening to $100 million or more, in addition becoming Tom Cruise's biggest film in the U.S.

Quote:
Joseph Kosinski’s Top Gun: Maverick is showing no signs of slowing down.

The Paramount and Skydance tentpole, starring Tom Cruise, is doing massive business in its second weekend. The sequel earned an estimated $86 million to boast the smallest decline ever — 32 percent — for a movie opening domestically to $100 million or more. Shrek 2, which launched to $108 million, fell 33 percent, according to Comscore.

Top Gun: Maverick has earned an estimated $291.6 million through Sunday in North America and $548.6 million globally. Top Gun 2 continues to fly high overseas, where it is likewise holding strong. It earning another $81.7 million for a foreign tally of $257 million.

On Saturday, Top Gun: Maverick became Cruise’s top-grossing film domestically when passing up 2005’s The War of the Worlds ($243.3 million), not adjusted for inflation. That’s after zooming past the first Top Gun ($180.3 million) and Cruise’s Mission: Impossible films, including the last installment, Mission: Impossible — Fallout ($220.2 million).

Internationally, Top Gun: Maverick is already well ahead of the $176 million earned by the first Top Gun, not adjusted for inflation. The U.K. leads with $39.7 million. However, it is far from matching many of the recent Mission: Impossible films at the foreign box office. One reason — the sequel isn’t getting a release in China or Russia.

The movie’s overall performance is a huge win for the summer box office and shows that people are eager to return to theaters after two years of sparse Hollywood product due to the pandemic.

In North America, Top Gun: Maverick had the playing field largely to itself until next weekend when Jurassic World: Dominion lands across the U.S.

Overseas, Jurassic World 3 began opening midweek week in 15 markets for an estimated total $55.5 million through Friday. It’s doing strong business in Mexico, Brazil and Italy in particular.

Other weekend highlights included Marvel and Disney’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness crossing $900 million — no small feat. The film placed No. 2 domestically with $9.3 million in its fifth outing for a domestic total of $388.7 million. Overseas, it has earned $520.7 million for a cume of $909.4 million.

Elsewhere, Cannes Film Festival entry Crimes of the Future, from David Cronenberg, opened to a disappointing $1 million. Neon launched the film in 773 theaters, a wide footprint for a specialty title. The film placed No. 10.

A24’s Everything Everywhere All At Once continued to be the big specialty headline as it hit $60 million in its 11th weekend upon earning $2 million for a domestic cume of $60.5 million.

June 5, 7:40 a.m.: Updated with revised estimates.

But, but I thought cinema was dead! I read about it in this forum. Pictures of deserted, half destroyed cinemas and a streaming only release system!

This doesn’t compute!

Seriously, this is fantastic. Good old Cruise!

Bring on MI7!

Long live the cinema!

This is the one and only reason why physical media is always superior to streaming.

I still say it's all Digital and Stored and accessed from a HDD on a Server, Subjective and very dependent on your equipment and setup.

I have over 800 Movies and TV Shows and haven't lost access or viewing for any of them. I have several Streaming Providers where I can access my Collection.

Nobody likes Ads, but that does bring down the price for viewing new Content. I have used this on some Providers like Peacock and Hulu. Aren't Previews a form of Ads, and you guys watch those all the time on your Commercial Discs. I use to take all that Junk off on my Backups!

That fact that you posted the same picture twice in one day was the obnoxious part... and also extremely lazy.

The picture speaks for itself. That fact that two people made posts that were totally subjective . . .

How's this picture as it fits your responses:

We are all stating our opinions as to why we think physical media is better than streaming or vice versa. Stating that something is subjective is not an argument against it.

How exactly did I distort or mis-represent any arguments in my responses? Please be specific instead on just posting pictures.

4th grade. That's when you hear stuff like that. Going by your posted pictures I can only assume that's the vibe your going for. Ugh.

I'm glad you're posting more in this thread Lee. I missed your silliness and your pictures are making me laugh. Someone posts a well thought out position and you post a kids drawing. Your texts are funny too so stick around and keep us all laughing.

Have 4 UHD BDs arriving today and will try to get the Northman in stores tomorrow.

I'm starting to wonder how long it will take until my UHD BD collection is larger than my Blu Ray collection. If there's more of the $11.99 titles it's not going to take long.

Thanks for that graphic!

I'm not sure of the context of your post, but I've heard that term used before and never took the time to look it up.

While I'm open to the idea that much intent can be lost in this "newer" mode of conversation, I have often felt that there is a willful misunderstanding and misrepresentation going on in the service of "winning" and argument...

I can’t believe Ghost isn’t available on 4K disc yet.

Some good films there.
