Default 'The Outer Limits' - The Classic Sci-fi Series Being Rebooted for Theaters

Quote:
THE OUTER LIMITS Movie in the Works at MGM with Scott Derrickson & C. Robert Cargill Penning the Script

MGM has been interested in bringing The Outer Limits to the big screen for some time now. The last time we heard any movement on the development front was almost four years ago when the studio was still in the thick of their financial issues. Now, it sounds like Scott Derrickson and his Sinister co-writer C. Robert Cargill will tackle the script for the big-screen adaptation of the 1960s sci-fi television series. Derrickson, who recently won the director’s chair for Marvel’s Doctor Strange, is a self-professed longtime fan of the series. Hit the jump for more on The Outer Limits and the writing duo’s plan of attack.

As Heat Vision reports, Derrickson and Cargill will tackle the script for The Outer Limits, specifically targeting one of the series episodes for the adaptation. Written by Harlan Ellison, the episode titled “Demon with the Glass Hand” will serve as the focus for their feature treatment. It centers on a man with no memory beyond the last ten days who is being hunted by an alien race. To make things even stranger, the man has a computerized hand and determines that he’s actually from the future. Derrickson and Cargill will incorporate time travel, alien invasion and genetic manipulation into their story. Hopefully the project finds a new audience and kicks off a series of The Outer Limits films, as MGM would surely love to build a franchise around the property.

Derrickson more or less confirmed the news via his Twitter account:

Quote:
My screenwriting future has LIMITS:

Derrickson, whose had his name all over the movie-news sites lately, also recently co-wrote and directed Deliver Us from Evil, which stars Edgar Ramirez, Eric Bana, and Olivia Munn, and opens July 2nd.

I hate to resurrect a thread that is this old. But what ever happened to The Outer Limits movie? I can't find any information on it, other than as of 2014, it's in the works. Anybody know anything?

I love the Ryan Reynolds episode and it has nothing to do with Ryan Reynolds. I'll just leave it at that.

That usually means a project is not happening.

I already figured that. My question is why? I cannot find any articles anywhere. So I thought maybe someone in this forum, or a fan of the show, may know and have read or seen something somewhere. MGM had some big plans for a franchise of several movies. News items, articles and press releases are usually archived. I guess I'll have to search more.

I just wish the original series was on streaming somewhere. Well, I guess it’s on Roku, but I can’t use that with the Chromecast.

Are you even a fan of of The Outer Limits?
You really took my post personally. In the movie world. No news tends to mean a project isn’t happening. Sorry I said that and it upset you so much. A person out there could still be writing a script and maybe an executive would want to work on it. But the lack of news in 8 years means nothing is happening. People in offices working on movies don’t keep a running tally of what is and isn’t happening and send it to the trades or even Blu-Ray forum. What does my liking Outer Limits matter to me telling you no news usually means nothing is happening? I offered a suggestion. I didn’t think it was snarky. But you seem to have this personal issue as if I’m somehow responsible for a movie not happening. I’m not. Sorry that I broke your heart and upset you so. Maybe put me on ignore if you take my posts this personally.

No, nothing personal, just your posts here are useless. No, not breaking my heart (another useless comment), just annoying at best. Why do you come to this thread anyway? Are you are a fan? I don't think so. You, thus far, have demonstrated you have no pertinent information.

So let's get back to discussing facts about The Outer Limits, not about so called alegited personal issues, while you go to another thread where you may know something.

I came back because you quoted me twice. I came initially to see if the is was happening. And I’ll keep coming back as long as you quote me. Maybe in a week you’ll quote me again to complain about my post.

LOL. I love that he took such umbrage that he had to quote you twice just to get it out of his system. I'm pretty sure I've seen you reply nastier than that first response you gave. Rather mild post to get so worked up about.

Okay. I wish there was some news one way or the other. Unfortunately they don't see any value in mentioning projects they have dropped -- unless they are super high profile like they did with "New Gods" a while back.

In 2019 it was rumored that another reboot of “Outer Limits” was in the works at a premium cable network. However there's been no update so the project is probably dead. It's mentioned in this article.

Development Hell as they call it. A project meets some roadblocks and then just stalls, eventually being put under a pile of other projects, rarely brought back, or passed to another studio.

As far as an Outer Limits feature film, it's not easy to do and will have fan appeal, but maybe not to a general audience unless it's Halloween time/Fall.

I'm a big fan of Outer Limits including the more recent series from the mid 90s or so, but trying to squeeze several short stories into one film, is not easy to do with every story being a hit.

Creepshow was good though. Creepshow 2, not a fan.
Tales From the Darkside was okay as a movie. Some decent ideas in there. The show had some better episodes.
Twilight Zone the movie was interesting but not as good as some of the actual show episodes.

Can't find any other thread to post this on. Does anyone know if Viavision's complete series DVD collections of the 90's Outer Limits contains the unedited versions of the series? The Canadian releases contain syndicated episodes. I own them but would buy it again for unedited episodes.

I'm curious about this mini-collection of saucily themed episodes. Unedited?

It would seem obvious that they're uncut, but I take nothing for granted; the original versions of the Showtime versions seem impossible to find...

For what it's worth, DEMON WITH A GLASS HAND is one of the two best episodes of the show, the other one being THE FORMS OF THINGS UNKNOWN. I mean they're just perfect from the beginning to the end in my opinion. THE MAN WHO WAS NEVER BORN, DON'T OPEN TILL DOOMSDAY, THE BELLERO SHIELD, THE GUESTS, THE INHERITORS PART I and PART II are also great for me.

For an almost completely uncut run, you need certain streaming services or slightly problematic German discs:

Thanks. Do you have a quick impression of the 'Sex & Science Fiction' compilation? Sometimes, these collections sound good in principle as themed groupings, but the curation can be a little lacking. I'm mostly familiar with Alyssa Milano's 'Caught in the Act,' which I use to check whether a streamer has access to the uncut versions (always disappointed). I'd be happy with a decent, representative handful of the racier episodes.
