Scream is one of the biggest overrated horror "classics" out there.

The film I hold most responsible for killing horror, sent it into bad teen slasher hell.

I like it more than III, no idea what the director was trying to do with that one.

Quest for Peace is at least earnest in it's goals. I mean, it mostly fails, but at least it tried to say something and Reeve is there giving it what he can given the constraints. I'd still love to see a restored cut. I'd pay stupid money for that.

Superman III succeeds in the Smallville scenes and the junkyard fight and some of the effects are still pretty solid, but as a whole it's too cynical. But goddamn, Reeve looks the best in the third film. He's by far the biggest he ever was and looks like a Curt Swan drawing come to life.

I mean I think some people would blame Friday The 13th for that, LOL.

But it really killed horror because of it's supposed "self-awareness" when really, it was just shit writing. And then the BS claim that it "saved" horror in the 90's when there are other numerous 90's horror that runs circles around the Scream franchise (and have more staying power).

Event Horizon, Misery, Tales From The Crypt: Demon Knight, In The Mouth Of Madness, New Nightmare, The Untold Story, Ring, Sleepy Hollow, Candyman, Tales from the Hood, The Frighteners, From Dusk Till Dawn......

The list just goes on.

Mostly agree. The problem with Scream is the problem with Hollywood in general -- Any idea good enough to make money is good enough to drive so far into the ground that it pops out in China, swerves back around and burrows straight back again. Scream was a cute "One and Done" idea that was a victim of its own success and consequently got wrung out like an old sponge.

I prefer my horror sincere, non-ironic and unself-aware.

Irony and snark are killing pop culture just as surely as a masked serial killer.

Really though basic slasher films never truly dominated in the 80's the way they came to in the years after Scream nore did they aim at such an obnoxious teen market.

To me that seemed to be the point were Hollywood basically decided horror was best aiming for the same narrow low effort market forever rather than attempting something with the quality for true mainstream sucess.

This statement truly baffles me. Were you alive in the '80s, and old enough to be aware of what was going on?

Horror flicks have always been geared to younger viewers, but it was the mid 90's when they started to all look like Halloween specials of 90210 or Dawson's Creek.

They looked like the time they were made, and how people looked/acted. All of the horror/slasher films of the '80s reflect the time they were made, too. They didn't look like the shows you mentioned because those shows didn't exist then.

Probably because most of the horror films that followed Scream starred members of the Dawson's Creek cast.

I didn't have a problem with the films themselves, but I did hate that almost all of them had the same 'giant floating heads' poster design. It was very easy to spot a Miramax/Dimension horror flick in the late 90s / early 2000s...

Halloween kicked off a lot of lower quality copy cats but low rent teen slashers didnt totally dominate the horror genre nore indeed did an obcession with jump scares over everything.

That was still the era of Alien, The Shining, American Werewolf, The Thing, Gremlins, Ghostbusters, Ther Terminator. Prince of Darkness, The Fly, Angel Heart, Predator, etc

Maybe it was something that was happening before Scream anyway but really that point to be seemed to be when mainstream horror became creatively bankrupt. Again I think its when hollywood desided that horror films would be aimed mostly at a not very discerning hardcore market, similar to whats happened with comedy being reduced mostly to frat bro antics.

Really hoping Arrow will release it on 4K at some point. We did get Hills Have Eyes, so it’s possible.
