Holy cow! All in for the bold ones! Not sure about the original Star Wars movie versions ever being released, though! At least, as long as George Lucas won't give his approval! And don't get me started on Aliens, True Lies and The Abyss!

Based on what I'm reading, does this mean this 4k could end up being worse than the blu ray?

I placed a preorder at once to show Disney there's interest in physical releases and because I like this movie. Obviously I'm hoping this is an upgrade.

"And so say we all!"

We'll just have to wait and see, what the outcome will be...

Worse than the latest Fox bluray? no, that one has an odd look based on the compression.

Worse than the early WB bluray? depends on who you ask.

It will be identical to the current 4k stream. The streaming version does not impress right out of the gate, it's darker than expected, and the blue grading is not identical to what we're used to with the old WB discs.

I haven't watched the good ol' blu in a while, but it's hard to think of the 4k as an upgrade, it's simply a different version and a different way to watch.

I don't think the 3 Alien sequels have 4Ks. Where have you heard this? I'm pretty sure the BDs got 2Ks and those are the most recent transfers.

Also there are tons of 4Ks from Fox. A few more:

7th Heaven
Street Angel
Diary of Anne Frank
Commando
Curly Top
Thieves Highway
Moontide
The Innocents
My Darling Clementine
Yellow Sky
Julia
The Gunfighter
The Detective

Would love UHD upgrades of most of these.

Looks like we will see what 30-40MBPS looks like on a 4K disc soon.

How nasty is the black crush on that stream though?

A disc can help clean it up. But this is Godfather, TGTBTU, Saving Private Ryan, Casino, Solaris, My Fair Lady, LOTR TT, The Great Escape, The NEW BATMAN etc.. Runtimes.

I will also add that the balcony scene no longer looks like green screen footage against the night sky, and the finale at the airport is darker, as it should be. Both of those scenes look much more realistic.

And spoiler, the bank shootout looks just fine. That one takes place in broad daylight obviously, but it seems to stand out amongst the bleakness of the other 3 hours.

He just tends to mix facts with flights of fancy, so always take it with a dump truck full of salt. There are no 4K transfers for the other Alien movies or the OG Star Wars films other than what fans have done themselves, like the bit about "upscales from 720 lines" or whatever.

If the runtime and box office of Endgame couldn't convince them to use a BD-100 than nothing can.

Disney spoke out only after gay groups spoke out against them for donating to politicians that voted for and supported the anti-gay law mentioned in the article. After that they were stuck having alienated both the gays and the anti-gays. Until it all blows over all they can do is keep putting in their First Gay Character in every other movie somehow who are on screen for 22 frames and cut in international versions.

There's a difference between approving a home video transfer on a studio monitor / in a projection room and reviewing the very final version of it after the encoding.

Maybe some directors or DPs actually do it, but I doubt it's more than maybe a few people. I wouldn't be surprised if Mann didn't even know (or cared) about the whole BD66 / BD100 thing. Why would he?

AFAIK no filmmakers ever look at the final encode, they don't even buy the discs anyway (they'd be gifted them but that's not what I mean, what I mean is that most don't have a clue what 4K disc even is, they just stream stuff or do the QT thing of collecting prints). If you mentioned that x film of theirs had really poor compression on disc they'd laugh in your face.

I'm sure that's true in some cases, but I both know of, and actually directly know some filmmakers who require they be shown a copy of the final commercial disc for approval before it gets released. (And I don't mean the home video master, but the actual disc) Maybe it doesn't always happen, but it does happen. Some filmmakers truly want to be sure the public sees their films exactly as intended, usually based on accidents in the past that caused that not to happen.

It's too bad Terry Gilliam didn't get the finished disc of 12 Monkeys!!

Good to know, but then I'll shift the goalposts and say:

Alas, Mr Gilliam literally signed off on the version with the looped footage so even having the filmmaker as a backstop is no guarantee of anything.
