Geared more toward broadcast and streaming (nevertheless insights gained which can be applicable to other types of distribution like movies on physical media), there was a workshop recently having a session which covered:

Effect of different TV display technologies on HLG viewing (OLED vs. QLED)
Effect of different TV display technologies on PQ viewing (OLED vs. QLED)
Side-by-side native HDR vs. SDR to HDR converted material on consumer displays
Effect of the use (or not) of metadata

I hope this session eventually becomes publicly available either in document form or video. A setting up pic from the May event –

Samsung caught cheating in TV benchmarks, promises software update

Quote:
Samsung has been caught cheating by designing its TVs to recognize and react to test patterns used by reviewers. The company promises to provide software updates to address the situation.

Reviewers, calibrators and certification bodies typically use a 10% window for HDR testing, which simply means that it takes up 10% of the screen. In this window multiple steps from black to white as well as a set of colors are measured. Samsung has designed its TVs to recognize this and other commonly used window sizes, after which the TV adjusts its picture output to make measurements appear more accurate than the picture really is. When using a non-standard window such as 9% (everything else equal), the cheating algorithm can be bypassed so the TV reveals its true colors.

This is deliberate cheating, an orchestrated effort to mislead reviewers.

For it's price category I like Sony's 2021 85" X85J.

Sony's new 2022 X85K series is a very nice upgrade from the X85J series, but you can't beat the final closeout price, just $1,699 for the 85" X85J! I have both 85" X85 series in stock.

Thank you.
I'm considering buying it, but I might only be able to buy it in October.

Anyone knows if this is no longer an issue with QD-OLEDs?

This is slowly getting on my nerves.

Below is from Edge of Tomorrow 4K Dolby Vision iTunes - on this scene, ATV developer HUD is showing 28 Mbps which is reasonable.

I have noticed this with few other films including 4K discs and used to ignore but not any longer.

That’s OLED for you, WRGB panels anyway. Near black will always be its Achilles heel.

Actually I find vertical banding bothersome than this but off late this NBC overshoot is driving me a bit mad. YMMV

I read this problem is almost gone with QD-OLEDS and to be frank this is handled quite well in the Panasonic GZ1000 OLED.
