Default The potential misconception of studio support

Nice thread on the breakdown of how many US distribution rights the various studios have

If correct this is quite an interesting post from Paintiff77

Quote:
The total United States film catalog (distribution rights for US only) break down as follows.
Number of Titles
Sony Pictures 336
Columbia Pictures 4224
Tri-Star Pictures 241
MGM/United Artist (Purchased By Sony) 1945
Paramount 5370
Universal 5157
Warner Brothers 3019
Warner Brothers MGM Titles via Ted Turner 2572
New-Line Cinema 521
Lionsgate 472
Disney 238
Buena Vista 812
Miramax 93
20th Century FOX 477
Dreamworks 104

BR- HD-DVD
[b]20424 -16743[/b[

If these numbers are true there is potentially less than a %5 delta in the quantity of movies available between the formats. This however doesn't speak to the quality. It is interesting nonetheless.

Universal and Microsoft... Without those two factors, would we have HD-DVD?

I really am hoping that PS3 looks very good and gives enough encouragement for Universal to release in both formats. That, right there, is all I think would be needed.

While Universal is clearly a behemouth, how much of a boost does the Universal library give to Blu-ray? Another 25%? Less?

But, really, what matters is how many movies want to be seen. I can tell you, my son wants Pixar and Disney pretty much more than anything else, and you better believe that a movie like Cars or The Incredibles will be very high on my purchase list.

Still wish those Universal titles could come out on Blu-ray though.

look at your current DVD collections, and you'll get a better idea of the studio's you enjoy films from most.

My collection consists of mainly WB,newline,SOny group, Disney & Fox titles
it's no wonder i'm a major BD supporter.

Universal, paramount and Dreamworks are a much smaller group in my collection.

My collection is sorted by studio and then alphabetically from there.

There's no way those figures are correct. Disney in particular has gotta have more than 238 of those nasty direct to video movies alone.

Most surprising to me was that I had always thought Fox and Buena Vista would have more movies. They both have a collection of solid movies but I thought their catalogs were more extensive.

Absolutely not.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but why are we posting AVS FUD threads here and citing forumers from there who have rather suspect backgrounds, to say the least, like that painit guy. He's been trolling those forums since January.

I'd trust anything he posts as far as I could fly off my roof right now.

i know some of my favorite studios are backing BR. i'm young with a great (well, IMO... maybe not compared to most of you) sound system. thus, most of my movies are the eye candy variety with lots of loud noises. i do also have a fair amount of modern classics, but looking at my collection you would know that a guy lives here for sure. i'm just "disapointed" LOTR might not be in hi def for 2 years or so. in the meantime, upconversion baby!

it's posted here so we can get objectivity thrown back in the mix. We can effectively dismiss fud here. Over there Fud becomes fact and the tools and shills rally around this BS and start parading around chanting;

"TEH SKY IS TEHFALLINGZOR"

or something like that....

LMAO

Another way to put it is:

Blu-ray : 80% of movies
HD DVD: 65% of movies

Yeah those numbers don't seem very accurate to me either especially the disney numbers They release so many lion king and etc sequels that go directly to disc that I gotta imagine they have more than 238.

Keep in mind that Universal owns many very old movies. The studios that go back to the 30's have many many (some very shite!) old movies in their catalogues.

Many of the 1930's titles like King Kong, Frankenstein, etc. are Universal. Including the countless sequels like Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman.

While some of those are a lot of fun, there are a lot there that will probably never make it to either format

Good point phloyd. I won't bother to dispute what makes a good movie since we all have different tastes but the truth is the older the movie is the more in need of restoration it probably is. That restoration isn't cheap and adds up quickly if you consider how many films are in dire need of it. I think it's safe to say that most films from pre-1990 will not be released in HD until a few years down the road when one or both formats are doing well with the masses. When more people are buying these HD discs then it'll be far more worthwhile for the studios that own the classics to invest in their restoration. Hopefully Criterion can help again.

I watched a bit of Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man off Monsters HD and the film generally looks quite good - especially for 1943.

The state of the print is another matter - it had a lot of dirt and scratch noise in places and would not be good enough for HD disc by any means.

I was impressed by the clarity though... all things considered.

Word is Universal is going to be releasing the 1931 Dracula and Frankenstein films on HD DVD soon. Very anxious to see if they bother to restore them first. I have the current Legacy Collection DVDs but I'm hoping for better source material next time around.
