Criterion Velvet Goldmine (1998) - Coming Soon from the Criterion Collection

From a user on Reddit who went to a screening of the restoration:

Quote:
so I was at the premiere of the new restoration of Todd Haynes's Velvet Goldmine (an amazing film that I love deeply) and one of the producers let slip that its getting a criterion release.

Good! Heard about the Tribeca screening and wondered in this meant a new edition was in the works. Current Blu-ray leaves a lot to be desired. Hopefully this means we'll be getting more Miramax titles.

Hoping this will be the longer international cut. The US Blu and DVD are the US Cut.

What was cut? I have the Canadian Blu-ray and U.K. DVD, not sure I ever compared them, and I don't see a listing for this on movie-censorship, nor any "alternate versions" details on IMDB.

In any case, I doubt Criterion would release a version not authorized by Haynes.

Great news, I really dig this one, although as I recall, it wasn't very well received when initially released. Not that that means anything in the grand scheme of things, but I remember watching VELVET GOLDMINE the first time and being enthralled, and very perplexed by the mixed to negative reception it initially got from most critics.

I just wish Criterion had gotten Hayne's POISON since the Kino Blu-ray is a disaster.

The 25-fps U.K. PAL DVD runs 1:58:12, with no opening Miramax logo. That works out to about 123-minutes at 24-fps. The Canadian Blu-ray/Miramax cut is 1:59:14 WITH the opening Miramax logo, so we're talking about an approximate 4-minute time difference between the cuts. I wonder if the U.K. DVD is the version that premiered at Cannes, and Haynes made some tweaks before the wide release?

Yes, the longer cut is the Cannes cut. In the interview from the day after the premiere that's included in the published screenplay, Haynes says:
Quote:
[G]lam rock was very much over in 1984 when the film ends, and even more so in 1998, even though the film brings it back to life for two hours and three minutes. (pp. xxviii-xxix)
I've never been able to find any discussion of why the cuts were made, whether they were Haynes' decision or he had any say over them, etc.

The French BD also has the longer cut, in a newer scan than the US BD.

The Tribecca screening page lists a running time of 118-minutes, so unless that's wrong, I'm guessing they remastered the shorter cut:

Wonderful news. Hopefully this opens the door to Criterion going back and re-releasing some previous Miramax titles. Looking at you TRAINSPOTTING.

Party Monster would be another good one for Criterion to release.

Velvet Goldmine is no longer with Miramax in the US, good thing too as Paramount wont licence most of the Miramax catalog they own and Miramax's version was butchered to get more screeing times. Criterion probably got it from HanWay (who owns producer Recorded Picture Company) since they worked with them for Crash and a few other titles.

Also worth noting MGM (whos Goldwyn Films division was also a co-producer) owned international rights and were the ones who distributed the longer cut.
