These are from the 2015 re-release, which does not containg English subs, but I muxed the ones from the previous release, as they are already synced (and can be easily obtained online). The screencaps have desaturated colors. Looks like you set MadVR display calibration to BT.2020 or something.

Encode of 2015 BD seems to be identical to 2014 BD. Differences in the bitrate graphs can probably be attributed to removal of padding in MKV and the extra seconds of video that seem to have been attached via branching I guess.

You're right, but I do have MadVR's screenshot settings set up to not perform any color & gamma processing... so it seems it's not working as intended?

Seems so. I would guess that if color & gamma processing is disabled, that MadVR would assume "disable calibration controls for this display" which is supposed to output BT.709 with 2.2 gamma if the output mode is not HDR, but doesn't seem to be the case.

Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory - 2020 JP BD vs US/UK BD

Same old 2006 5.1ch DVD-BOX HD remaster that has not aged well, but the compression is significantly better than whatever the heck Rightstuf put on the US/UK BD with poor detail retention particularly in darker colors. In addition, this release fixed a frame corruption issue in one scene from episode 12 that affects the 2016 JP BD and US/UK BD

The 2020 JP BD includes subtitles in English, as well as Japanese, 2x Chinese Traditional (Taiwan and Hong Kong), and Chinese Simplified. However, the extras are not subtitled and that means no subtitles for the 2 Mayfly in Space shorts.

The original 2.0 Japanese track is included unlike the US/UK BD on which the Japanese 2.0 track is downmixed from that nauseating 2006 5.1ch DVD-BOX redub. The US/UK BD does strangely retain the original Japanese 2.0 track for the first Mayfly in Space short.

I might pick up the 2020 JP BD of 08th MS Team, but that depends on if there are plans for a UK release and what materials that release would use. The US BD of 08th MS Team, despite having an higher average video bitrate of ~30 Mbps, is just as bad as their 0083 BD and the 2.0 track is downmixed from 5.1 as well.

ITA BD is the clear winner here.

JP BD is in some scenes lowpass filtered in chroma planes and sometimes also the luma plane. I can understand lowpass filtering visually complex scenes, but I find it strange that IMAGICA sometimes filters scenes that, at least to my eyes, don't appear to be complex (e.g. #12). This isn't the only IMAGICA authored title where I've seen the filtering on non-complex scenes happen.

Compression woes aside, the UK/AU BD also suffers from horizontal banding lines (very obvious in #5), I guess the result of the bitdepth conversion or something.

I’ve asked a couple times but haven’t gotten an answer. I’d love to get rid of my old release if the steelbook is better because it’s pretty bad.

Is the 08th US release also based on redub like with 0083 or is the audio just a bad downmix? I can live with the latter but not the former. Thanks.

The only thing that got replaced in the 5.1 remix was the sound effects I believe. Dialogue should be unchanged from the original 2.0 Dolby Surround mix.

They also used a different part of "Magic" (1st ED theme) as BGM during the episode where Kou is helping Kelly fix the Val-Waro. Not sure if they did that on purpose or if it was a mistake, but I'm guessing a mistake.

They didn't use Sentai's because that one has the wrong gamma.

Sentai's 2020 BD should have correct gamma, but it is most likely lowpass filtered in every scene just like every one of Sentai's encodes nowadays.

BELLE - UK BD vs JP BD vs US BD

Considering that the world of 'U' is unfriendly to the Blu-ray format owing to its busy and highly detailed nature, the UK BD puts out a respectable presentation that with its reduced banding and artifacting fares better than the US BD and the higher bitrate JP BD.

However, I must admit that I was surprised by the video bitrate. There was room to increase the bitrate. Can't help but wonder if the unused space was originally planned to be filled with the extras from the GKIDS BD which are now exclusive to the Deluxe Edition. That said, increasing the bitrate might not necessarily make a significant difference in the 'U' scenes due to the world's characteristics.

The UHD format is much better equipped for the 'U' scenes, but I'll look into that at a later moment.

Yes, we initially thought more bonus features would be going on Belle’s main feature disc, til we found out just how many there were and we’d need two bonus discs. But the main reason was the sheer number of audio tracks. DTS-MA tracks are very dynamic VBR and have unpredictable total bitrates, so with this many it’s super easy to have a buffer overflow once it’s all muxed together. Luckily we didn’t have any issues. Anyway, if it came out on top, clearly it was effective, and our VBR settings worked to keep the busy scenes in good shape.

In addition, this release fixed a frame corruption issue in one scene from episode 12 that affects the 2016 JP BD and US/UK BD The 2020 JP BD includes subtitles in English, as well as Japanese, 2x Chinese Traditional (Taiwan and Hong Kong), and Chinese Simplified. However, the extras are not subtitled and that means no subtitles for the 2 Mayfly in Space shorts. The original 2.0 Japanese track is included unlike the US/UK BD on which the Japanese 2.0 track is downmixed from that nauseating 2006 5.1ch DVD-BOX redub. The US/UK BD does strangely retain the original Japanese 2.0 track for the first Mayfly in Space short. I might pick up the 2020 JP BD of 08th MS Team, but that depends on if there are plans for a UK release and what materials that release would use. Looks like you set MadVR display calibration to BT.2020 or something. Caps of 2014 BD Left: correct (captured in MPV) / Right: MadVR display calibrated to BT.2020 (captured in MPC-HC) Encode of 2015 BD seems to be identical to 2014 BD. Differences in the bitrate graphs can probably be attributed to removal of padding in MKV and the extra seconds of video that seem to have been attached via branching I guess. I would guess that if color & gamma processing is disabled, that MadVR would assume "disable calibration controls for this display" which is supposed to output BT.709 with 2.2 gamma if the output mode is not HDR, but doesn't seem to be the case.

Not sure if they did that on purpose or if it was a mistake, but I'm guessing a mistake.
