Watched this two weeks ago and I have to to say the colors were stunning. And the sound was incredible. I could hear everything like I was actually there. I really enjoyed it and it didn't even feel like an almost 4 hour movie.
But am I the only one who noticed "graininess" (sorry, I can't think of another way to describe it) and on the scenes with the sweeping desert vistas I could swear I saw what looked like "bands" faintly moving vertically across the screen. Also the picture froze once. I had to restart the movie and skip through the chapters to get back to the spot where it happened (after they took Acaba, at about the 1 hour, 50 minute mark). Thankfully it continued without another glitch. I've watched this many times over the years both on broadcast tv and dvd. I have also that blu-ray 50th anniversary collector set from 2012 but I confess I've never watched the blu-ray. How does it compare to this 4K? |

Regarding the vertical distortion, it is a known issue with this film. I believe David Lean himself said that the intense heat of the location filming did actual damage to the negative of this film. So, also nothing to worry about, this is as good as it gets without altering the film digitally, which is a big no-no. |

I confess, this was the first time watching LOA on our 55" LG OLED which is probably why I noticed the graininess and the vertical distortion. I'm very happy I picked this up on release day. worth every penny ![]() And IMHO it was an absolute travesty that Peter O'Toole lost the Oscar to Gregory Peck. |

The "vertical distortion" is actually covered in the restoration featurette that was on the Blu-ray release, and I presume is carried over here (I don't have the UHD yet). It was indeed film damage that occurred during the original filming due to the high desert heat affecting the negatives. Very interesting information and well worth watching.

Politics (current Civil Rights movement) and giving it to a Hollywood guy (i.e. the same reason Lee Marvin won a few years later), was the difference. Hollywood can be very reverse-snobbish about stage actors who do films on the side or at least give that impression. |

To Kill A Mockingbird is one of the greatest films of all time and Gregory Peck delivered on ALL counts. Completely deserved. That's not to say Peter O'Toole also didn't deserve the Oscar but unlike the Hepburn/Streisand tie, it wasn't to be in this year but should have been. But that's the way the ol' Oscar bounces. The post that Oscars don't mean squat is also correct as Cary Grant, Barbara Stanwyck and Alfred Hitchcock never won an Oscar except Honorary and same with Peter O'Toole. |
