At the time, their 5th birthday sale was really solid. Many titles were in the $12-15 range which was amazing at the time. They had one of the biggest selections as well for their own sale. Always love a good sale, especially when it's direct so the company releasing the movies gets more money in their pockets.

Yeah the exclusives are annoying. They started out by doing upgrades for DVDs like the 4 pack that had Grotesque and some DVD double features. I didn't bite on those since I didn't want to spend $60 for 2 Corman movies when the DVD double feature at $13 was adequate (though after watching Twice Dead, it was a lot of fun).

I miss the old double features they routinely did for some of their MGM creature features. Getting two horror movies for $15 or so was great. Especially if one was kind of a stinker. I know some people feel that each movie needs to be given the solo release treatment, but it doesn't economically make sense or make shelf space sense.

With the exclusives, Shout has learned that people will buy the titles at $27 per release and due to FOMO will sell out of 1500 units. That's $40,500 grossed per release (not sure if that is enough to recoup the license/restoration/packaging) but it' guaranteed. Spending $27+ (I can't pay for shipping on top of it) for a 60 minute B movie without any special features is a tough pill to swallow. Those could easily be double features which is how they were released back in the day.

I miss the double feature releases. I liked the idea of 2 lesser known films getting a cheap release

This was years ago, but Scream Factory reps (Cliff and another guy whose name I can't recall) were asked about their double releases during a horror podcast and why there aren't more of them. The SF response was that they sold poorly compared to the company's single releases, and the reason behind it was as mysterious to them as it was to the person who asked the question.

I think the person you're thinking of is Jeff Nelson, the marketing director. When I see interviews with someone from Scream Factory, it's usually one of those two, or both in this case.

Hopefully SF does not stack the Child's Play discs....like they did for the Candyman 4K.

Because a lot of people (myself included) do not like to have double features or multiple movies put together that have nothing to do with each other. Not to mention it also sucks when trying to organize your titles on the shelf when they're 2 completely different films.

I never had a problem with 2 unrelated films being sold together if they received their own discs as a person can easily separate them as desired. I purchased just about all of those double feature discs but always, always asked for separate discs (and was SUPER happy when the Slumber Party Massacre double feature went that direction) and was bummed when most didn't receive them. I have no idea if that was a factor for other folks or not as I picked all of these double features up regardless, but it was always a sticking point for me.

The lack of Tv cuts is really really unfortunate. They could scrap most all of the talking heads and have just given me the tv spots, epks, promotional materials and a cleaned up (dare I say HD with SD inserts if needed) tv cut and I would have been thrilled. The lack of a completely assembled tv cut leaves this release feeling incomplete for me. I'm curious if Universal outright refused to allow the TV cuts or what the story is with them not being included.

Criterion and Arrow managed to include the TV cuts for Fast Times At Ridgemont High and Weird Science + Sixteen Candles respectively, so I don't think that's it.

My thought in regards to that comment was really geared toward the idea that Universal themselves might have had some future plan for them but after posting that and reading through the 4k thread it looks increasingly likely that the Universal Fire may have wiped out those materials and so whatever we'll be getting from Scream Factory may be of a lesser quality. I've got all 3 pre-ordered and will be sticking with those orders but it will be unfortunate if it turns out to be true that those original bits were forever lost and can never be transferred to HD.

Were they in HD or SD? Maybe Shout couldn't locate the TV cuts in decent quality. Their release of Earthquake also included the TV cut, I believe.

The sad thing is - as proven by their restorations of Gone With The Wind and The Wizard Of Oz - WB could’ve done Freaks right the first time in 2004, and nobody would complain about that DVD. The restorations of the other two are still in use 20 years later, and they look perfect. Freaks on the other hand was handled by a team who, to paraphrase Stroheim, had nothing on their head but a hat when they did Freaks, and it shows.

Here’s one no one mentions. Go to the end of the scene with Hans and Frieda in his wagon. Turn the sound all the way up, and listen as the scene changes. As Cleopatra says “Nice, very nice,” you can actually hear the equipment used to transfer the movie running in the background. That one defies belief.

Either an SD Blu-ray (like Discotek does), an upscale (like that Prince Blu-ray that just came out), or re-render everything without any edits (like they’re trying to do with Buffy, The Vampire Slayer). Hell, even a complete series DVD would do it for me.

Dragonslayer (Paramount)
Fighting Back (Paramount)
The Penthouse (Paramount)

Hysteria (WB)

Hideaway (Sony)
Relentless (Sony)

Cold Steel (Sony)
Severed Ties (Sony)
Dead Birds (Sony)

The Dark Secret of Harvest Home (Universal)
Trapped (1989) (Universal)

Enemy Territory (MGM) (still optimistic the clearance issues will be resolved eventually)
Abby (MGM) (especially because I feel Shout are about the only label who could pull this off, given their relations with MGM and WB)
I assume you’re referring to the Tim Curry/Stephen King movie from 1990? WB almost had a perfect Blu-ray of It, but they fücked it up royally by only including the DVD cut of the movie. So we’re still stuck with the VHS and laserdisc for the original cut.

Surviving The Game needs a Blu-ray ASAP. That is such an underrated movie that has been reminding us to always check our barrels for over 20 years now. I wish Ice-T would throw his weight around and get it put out on Blu-ray.

Enemy Territory and Abby need a release. I’ve never heard of the former and have heard much about the latter, and would finally like to see it. Even if it only survives on crappy prints and bootlegs, I’ll take it. If they can tease Last Summer (of which no 35mm elements are known to exist) and Freaks (which survives on shitty 35mm prints that are uber-removed and a 16mm print), rhey can release Abby.
