Disney is just like most any other corp, they will support any avenue that is profitable. Their (Disney) view: they have no control of physical media once product is sold (First Sale Doctrine), with digital they have 100% control.

I’m still waiting for the day when they figure out how to edit the discs we own. It sounds Orwellian, but I know them screwing with the discs we bought eons ago is just around the corner. |

Physical media is superior to streaming precisely because the studios can't possibly ever modify or take away any content. Last edited by PenguinInfinity; 06-29-2022 at 10:36 PM. |

2. The way it could be possible would be either write a code onto the disc where it can be erased and rewritten via the wifi on a player, and/or have technology at the studio where they can update the disc as soon as it’s put in the player. I’ve been expecting a move like that for years, and it’s only a matter of time before they try to do it. (I will also say that doing this will be fücking wrong and we’ll absolutely hate Disney even more than we already do if they try it. But the don’t care about us.) 3. I absolutely agree with that statement about physical media being better than streaming. I also think that the inability to take away or modify a disc isn’t a fact to Disney, it’s a challenge. Remember the woman in the window in The Rescuers, or the priest in The Little Mermaid, or “SEX” in The Lion King? You know as well as I do that if they could they would round up every one of those tapes and replace them with a cleaned up copy they would. And I wouldn’t be shocked if they learn how to do it. |

No, most disc are pressed, no altering. UHD BD are also pressed but the studios could invoke a feature during authoring that could have the player phone home for authentication before playing. AFAIK no title has been released with this feature activated.

Your fear that Disney (or any other company) will ever be able to modify the discs they've already released is totally unrealistic. Quote:
I've avoided all video games that require an update and/or constant internet connection and I'll do the same thing with movies if any studios ever try it with their discs. Last edited by PenguinInfinity; 06-30-2022 at 01:30 AM. |

Thats why I just want to enjoy every film in the HT and appreciate that I grew up in a time when film was absolutely huge. Considering the fact that 35 and over is still a age group that engages with long form content, I am hopeful film will last my lifetime. Any other worry about streaming services quality and subsequent threats to high quality formats seems by far the lesser worry to me these days. Or am I just being hopelessly pessimistic? |

I don't worry about any of this crap... We're all sitting in these awesome home theaters with ridiculously great sound systems. We split hairs over how unwatchable a stream is in comparison to a physical disc without recognizing how much better today's "inferior" option is in comparison to yesterday's "state of the art"
We're living in the most opulent time in human history. Every day we get into mechanical horseless carriages that take us distances humans weren't meant to travel to do historically light work or, in many cases, to some leisurely pursuit. Nobody on this forum is wondering where their next meal is coming from. I'm really not having a go at anyone. I love coming here and having these academic discussions about the future of this hobby. I've seen some really great new movies this year in unbelievable quality in the comfort of my home. A newly mastered 4K version of one of my favourite movies showed up at my door today. I'm sure it will look and sound better than the DVD and Bluray versions I had previously....not that the guys dissecting it over in the dedicated thread will acknowledge that - not while there are screen grabs to argue over... I don't spend my time worrying over the state of movie media- Not while things are still getting better in that regard. There are some massively bad things that are about to happen that will negatively impact the human experience on this planet. Movie collections will not be on the radar of things to worry about. On the upside, if your over 50, you won't be around for the worst of it! So relax, pour yourself a scotch and enjoy the 4K, high colour gamut, ATMOS goodness on your massive screens from your comfy chair. IT DOES NOT GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS!!!! |

For physical media the future will always be better than the present. In the future everything that is currently available on physical media will still be available plus more. In the unlikely event that all the studios supporting physical media the billions of discs they've already sold will still be in circulation.
Unfortunately the same can't be said for streaming. |

As mentioned before, very few items in my home theater are available in the box stores or very few etaillers. But many devices are still manufactured and available, you just have to know where to look for info and a supplier.
![]() IMHO, as long as physical media remains profitable it will be available. |

I saw Black Phone and Elvis this week. I must say Black Phone is my favorite movie of the year so far. I'm very glad Scott Derrickson made this instead of Doctor Strange 2. Elvis was great as well. They both better get UHD releases

Bad news on The Black Phone UHD stateside release. They're pulling the Wrath of Man BS with it and only releasing it on BD. May have to import the 4K. I'm keeping eyes out on an English friendly import of that one.
