Crossing restoration was done at 2K - wouldn't wait.
Tales of Hoffman - more or less expect it from SC next year.

However, I feel that both of these films are "prime candidates" to upgrade to 4K. I am willing to give Criterion two years to make this upgrade, just like I am currently doing with the Three Films by Luis Buñuel collection (to be clear, I am not anticipating a 4K upgrade with Buñuel, but rather a "body of work" set, much like the Bergman and Fellini sets.)

Ironically, I decided to purchase the Once Upon a Time in China set. While i would have loved to purchase this set in 4K, I speculate that it will not be upgraded to 4K anytime soon.

These are the decisions that a physical-media film curator must make these days. Our numbers are dwindling, my friends, but my passion for hard-copy intensifies. What's next? 8K? 16K? 32K? The bottom line is that I would like to continue making my lifetime's remaining purchases on the best format available, and currently that is 4K.
Criterion just got the Coens to release a new 2K remaster (not 4K) only 5 months ago. Why would you think they'd go through all that expense and time again, let alone any time soon? Also worth noting, because it's not that widely known or publicized, it's a new director's cut with 76 mostly small, but well documented edits.

I know little about The Tales Of Hoffmann, beyond that it was just released a month ago, but again, why assume a Criterion 4K is on the way?

Regarding tomorrow’s announcements, I strongly believe that Kurosawa’s Cure is going to be announced. It’s a horror film, perfect for October announcements, and Janus Films has stopped promoting its re-release theatrical run, indicating that its most likely over by now. This is just too good of timing and I’m hoping this prediction isn’t proven false.

I hope so. If we're lucky we get a double Kurosawa present by getting the Akira Kurosawa boxset in November.

Gave up and got the Eureka Cure.

I think I've figured it out. They're using the discs as sanders for furniture making

I think Cure will happen, but I also don't think they'll be anything else in the spooky realm for October. Criterion doesn't put a ton of weight on that aspect, maybe they'll be good for one title but I wouldn't expect a month of horror or horror adjacent titles.

Yeah, nearly every October there's at least one horror, or something dark along those lines.

Hausu (2010)
Kuroneko (2011)
Rosemary's Baby (2012)
The Uninvited (2013)
Eyes Without a Face (2013)
The Brood (2015)
Kwaidan (2015)
Vampyr (2017)
The Lure (2017)
Sisters (2018)
Haxan (2019)
Onibaba (2021)

(Oct. 2016 had Pan's Labyrinth which isn't purely horror, but has dark horror elements. They also released the del Toro trilogy set that month)

Oh totally--I just don't think it'll feature Cure AND Living Dead AND Lost Highway. One, but I think that'd be that.

I agree. Most of our lists every month (mine included) are almost always too ambitious, and unrealistic lol. I throw everything at the wall, and see what sticks sort of thing, but I do try to add a few guesses from different genres to mix it up a little.
