Raised by Wolves wasn't released in the US either, they're just released in Canada because HBO Max isn't available there.

Whether Netflix agrees with them releasing the whole series on 4K Blu Ray(and for me personally also regular Blu Ray either included or a separate set) or doing a Pan & Scan inspired version of maybe season 1 on the streamer(a fun novelty) is another question.
It's nice that they want it, and as much as I wish their opinion held weight in that aspect, it's ultimately not their decision. Mike Flanagan has been trying to get Netflix to release Midnight Mass but they won't. So at this point, if it's not produced by an outside studio like Sony or Paramount or Universal, I don't expect a physical release of a Netflix show.

I don’t know, Mike Flanagan is great and all, I love his work, but he didn’t create one of the most successful shows that Netflix has. The Duffers might have that kind of sway, or at least more, they’re even getting their own production label. Hopefully a complete series set will happen at the least, if anything.

Look at it this way...the fourth season of the show was over twice as long as the FIRST season, and each episode had a budget almost larger than the first season COMBINED. They have power, and have utilized it to demand running times and budgets far beyond the average Netflix show.

And given all the Stranger Things merch that's being pushed, why not include discs as part of that at some point? This is the gift that will keep on giving for Netflix, only don't do something as dumb as making it a US retailer exclusive and then don't advertise it.

It’s Netflix’s most successful show of all time (if you add up viewership from all seasons so far), so I think there’s a strong chance for a 4K disc/physical release later on.

Fingers crossed.

If they sold the show on Amazon and other popular retail sites, and let people know that the discs EXISTED, they would have sold so much more, instead of them getting remaindered down to $5 at Target before being allowed to quietly go OOP.

If more Stranger Things is released on disc, I hope they reign in the packaging. Trying to replicate big-box VHS tapes is not shelf-friendly. They should just do the retro-VHS slipcovers that Mill Creek does. They could still get creative, and imitate different studios / styles with the fonts and layouts. If they did that, I'd buy seasons 1 - 5 in a heartbeat. If they try to make some behemoth Star Trek / DBZ / whatever-style VHS box set, I'm out.

But Stranger Things isn't part of their production studio, it might be co-produced with the last season but it's not going to cover what was already done by somebody ese. Maybe in the future they'll put a home video clause in their contracts or something if they want things to get a physical release.

As much as I want them on 4K (because I'm not paying that much extra for Netflix), you also just described the reason why Netflix wouldn't want it to be out on disc. Everybody wants to hold content captive for their services, even more so now. I could see Netflix being like nah, you want to see this you have to pay us every month that you want access to this show. It happens with Disney, it's happening with WB. Paramount, and Universal to a lesser extend, seems to be the only one who gives a crap now it seems.

I brought that up before. I don't like the big packaging they used with season 1 and 2 and I bought replacement cases to put them in. They could do the big stuff if they want, but at least put the discs in a normal case so you can take it out and put the rest away if you don't want it or want to display it.

I personally love the packaging; it was REALLY well done here IMO. I don’t typically like oversized packaging but I’m this case it just works so well considering the show itself and seasons 1 and 2 look great together on my shelf. If they do eventually release seasons 3, 4 and 5, I’ll be pretty irked if they change the packaging to standard Blu cases because then they won’t match. And they must match!

Physical Media on one hand. Streaming in the other.

Amazon would be the worst place for it. Amazon messed up releasing agents of shield season 2 and agent carter season 1. There was no one tp price match that Its priced stayed at 54 dollars and even went as high as 70. I think it only went down to 54 becuase people complain. Putting those sets on amazon may have also been the reason the other seasons didnt get any further US releases.

He’s saying instead of being target exclusive these should have been sold everywhere. I agree this would have been a much more successful release if it wasn’t a target exclusive.

The problem is Netflix's stock is going down and they need people to subscribe to their service. Locking Stranger Things behind their service is one way to do it.

I saw a ridiculous stat of how many people that subscribe to things like Netflix and forget to cancel.

I do think that's the wrong thinking by Netflix though. I think you have several camps. People that will never subscribe to Netflix but will happily buy Stranger Things on disc (me), people that will sub to Netflix AND buy Stranger Things on disc because they are collectors and people that will only subscribe to Netflix and never buy anything physical (the majority).

So..why cut out a potential sale? You are leaving money on the table for people that want the physical product. The people that buy the disc are either never going to sub to Netflix or are already subbed. You aren't hurting your business - you are helping it. While there might be some people that will subscribe for a month just to watch a certain show, 9.99 is far less money than what you can charge for a physical set.

I just realized recently that Netflix had a web shop. Throw each season of Stranger Things on there for even $50-60 a pop and us collectors will bite. Stop being so narrow minded that you have to lock things behind a subscription as bait for people to subscribe. It just won't happen for some of us.

Either way, I think we'll get a full box set once the series wraps but it would be nice to get the individual seasons for those that have already invested with 1 and 2.

Netflix must think that lots of people fit into a fourth camp: people who would prefer to buy physical media but will subscribe to Netflix for Stranger Things if it isn't available on disc.

Season 4 has broken streaming records, and continues to top charts. The show is also bringing back previous subscribers, as well as new ones. There's just little upside to release the show outside of their service right now.

No they wouldn’t. I know I’m not the only one that subscribes for Stranger Things and would love to own it on disc. I’m physical over streaming all day but no way am I going to miss great content that doesn’t get released on disc.
