World-renowned child actor Charles Brown said it best.

Good grief.

As for the Directors Cut:
The Lounge Scene and (for me) the final shot of Vger exploding are the only bad things in a movie that runs over 2 hours (!).

Otherwise for me the DC ist the superior Cut. Always was since 2001.
In the theatrical version i have much more things i dont like so i can live with those two things.
Altough i absolutely agree that the lounge scene shouldnt have happen the way it turned out. Its mindboggling considering all the other hard work.
Well for the DC, I'm referring mainly to the lounge scene of course, and also smaller issues like the shuttle that stops mid-flight just before the shot changes, though that's not really noticeable in motion like the lounge scene which is much more obvious. For the theatrical, I'm referring to the space dock shot that was supposedly fixed in the previous release but they actually made worse, and that will most likely end up in the SLV too since it's using branching (unless they secretly fixed that shot specific for this new release, which I highly doubt).

So due to those reasons I've lost a bit of my excitement for this release. I'm still planning on picking it up, but that $75 price really stings bad if I want the SLV, considering all three cuts have cgi issues, for a film that was released in 1979. I'm still considering if I really want the SLV that bad to spend $75 just to get it. That's like $45 more just to get that version over just picking up the standalone standard release without the SLV.

^You don't like how a few of the VFX shots look.

You don't like the SLV cut only being on 4K disc

You don't like the packaging.

You don't like any of the included "tat."

You didn't like the price at $107, $100, $83, or even at $75.

There's no pleasing people like you.

How about you get off my case? Seriously. This is a discussion thread and I'm considering spending $75 on one film. This thread is here specifically to discuss things like this. Ill ask again for you to stop getting on my case.

There are lots of people in these threads who feel this whole situation is not ideal. SLV only ultra-limited and in only one expensive version. Questionable CGI fixes. if you want to eat it all up, go ahead. Nobody is stopping you from loving this release. But stop complaining that some of us don't love how this has been handled.

You know what's worse than somebody complaining about something? Somebody else complaining about the complaining.

I have shelves full of sets that have pleased me. No, $75-$100 to get a specific version of the film is not pleasing to me. Especially when it's not 100% as it should be (no borked cgi shots).

Well it clearly isn't as perfect as we'd hoped, but I'm just thankful we have it at all, frankly. Paramount had no interest in this at all until their streaming service came onto the horizon.

ST-TMP CAE is too farking overpriced.

The US release only having 3 discs is miserly.
Bunch of paper based material I personally do not care that much about but others may find them compelling.
Maybe a slim picture book comprised of 20 pages or if they are being generous 50 pages.

Then making the SLV version exclusive to this set and only on the 4K disc is quite obnoxious and exploitative of the older fan base.

Well...honestly....those San Francisco shots were never the best Part of the Directors Edition.
On the Original one in 2001 everything was too static. Almost no movement. The water was frozen too.

So when i say to you that for me the 2022 is a MASSIVE improvement i think you can understand that from my point of view.
The shots finally have life in it! The Water is not frozen anymore and it looks much more realistic overall.

At the same time i like that it doesnt look too perfect because the movie is still from 1979 and not from today.

All i see in this San Franciso Shots is exactly the improvement i hoped for.

I can understand from your point of view that if you seek for 2022 level perfection that it is underwhelming and dissappointing and clearly misses the 2022 standard from a tech point of view.

But i never expected it to look perfect. Altough its a digital Matte Painting i always thought it will have some kind of "old school" look.
The DE Team always says that the new effects have to blend in as good as possible to the rest of the movie.
Thats btw. why i dont like the Vger Explosion because it looks too "computerish" and mediocre.
Also the outside view of the Vger ship is too colorful now in my opinion and looks therefore like a typical modern CGI Ship.
But with that i can live because its done very well...too well i would say

The Directors Edition was the overall WAY better edit for me since 2001. And aside from the two scenes mentioned (Lounge, Vger Explosion) i love the new updated 2022 Version.
Are there some additional little things in it that altough i like it could still be better?
Yes.
But its minor for me.
Overall its a miracle that the redo did happen at all in my opinion. I lost hopes for that years ago and was very surprised when the announcement came that they will redo it for 4K Presentation.

And because its the version of the movie i like the most i feel like a child before christmas. Some minor things cant ruin my excitement here.

Only those 2 mentioned scenes are really hurting my stomach.....and i will have to live with it because i cant go back to the theatrical version after this is released.
I missed all the editing tweaks and additional scenes for so long now because the old DVD just doesnt look good enough anymore projected on big screen. Therefore i watched the theatrical for years now....i just cant wait to watch the movie in the directors Edition from disc in my home cinema projected on big screen
Finally i will have my prefered version of the movie back! YAY!!

And the good thing is:
This is no George Lucas.
The Original Version is also available and even the Special Longer will be available for the hardcore fans.

Some people like the trinkets and some do not, but this kind of "added value" is common with limited editions.

The decision on whether or not to purchase a non-essential item like this limited edition is not exploitative. Anyone buying it does so of their own free will. You are not a victim because you paid more than you wanted to for an item that you never needed in the first place.

That older fanbase is the group that can most easily afford this luxury item, too. Most of us have more disposable income later in life than earlier on.

For whatever it's worth, when I saw the DE theatrically earlier this year, I didn't notice any of the wonky shots. Possibly I never would have, if not for posters here.

So, y'know, thanks y'all. :P

The price point of the Complete Adventure set as the only way to get the SLV is the real bitter pill for me. This is gonna be a "skip meals to save up enough scratch" type of purchase…

The very fact that the price has actually dropped a bit already may indict that preorder numbers are potentially lacking after the initial interest by us fellow physical media dweebs.

Assuming that is the case then the market has spoken and has found that Paramount was asking too much and in response retailers are preselling at a slightly lower price.

There have been better value Limited Edition sets from boutique labels at lower prices which makes the STTMP CAE comparatively too overpriced.

Many of the older fan base may easily afford such a price but there are likely many who out of principle are not that keenly interested in plunking down for pricey sets after the decades of prior releases.

Anyhow, I fundamentally do not understand the compulsion to defend a corporation at every turn but I guess everyone has their kinks.

I am one of those crybabies who doesn't like the lounge shot, can't believe the longer version is only on UHD, hates the packaging and thinks the price is absurd. I won't be buying it.

The posts about the discs freezing/skipping due to the scratches caused by the packaging will be entertaining, though.

Conversely, I don't understand the compulsion to vilify a corporation at every turn, either.

Paramount is a for profit company selling a non-essential luxury item hoping to maximize their profits, which is pretty much the same goal of every living person on the planet: to make as much money as possible.

Who here would sell any non-essential product that they controlled exclusively for anything less than what they thought they could get for it? I bet that most of us would seek the highest profit possible every single time.

I simply HATE the box. If the box was $45-$50 I might buy it and then immediately transfer it to a case. And I'd still be stuck with a box I didn't want -- so I'd give it away or try to sell it -- I guess?
I am a completist but I'm really not a fan of the SLV anyway so I am not stressing it, but for the folks who love that version -- kind of a bummer for sure.

I bought those plastic sleeves that you recommended. So long as the initial disc extraction doesn't cause any scratches, I can tolerate the packaging. How the discs are stored is my only complaint here, but that is easily rectified.
