Quite interesting that this slate of displays were so close but QD-OLED prevailed.
Thanks Robert Zohn for doing this shootout!

Looking forward to a 77" QD-OLED at a compelling price.
Shame Samsung has yet to match Sony on various important PQ attributes.
Wonder what LG will have to debut next year.

What's weird about that? We had one in the room to look at and analyze.

Really gotta hand it to Samsung Display for producing that lovely panel and forcing LG to step it up. Peeped the livestream and the Sony A95K looked like the cleanest most uniform oled I've ever seen! I'll be interested to see the full score cards whenever Robert gets a chance to share. No idea what happened w/ the G2 regarding SDR because that's supposed to be an area of strength

Because most of the contents are well within the capabilities of the TV tech.

Whatever happened to this constant ramblings about OLEDs being dim and poor with near black handling

The attendees commented that the LG G2 had a poor screen uniformity, something unfortunately more common than normal.

LG should take more care of the uniformity of its panels. Some are unacceptable.

The white field uniformity on OLED has been pretty consistent in that regard (unlike the just-above-black uniformity which improved a lot). Most are a little multicolored if you go looking for it on a white field. It's quite similar to how a lot of plasmas were. I find it a lot easier to tolerate than the dark corners and general mottled look of most large screen LCDs.

It probably got commented on more this year because for the first time we've had the new QD-OLEDs to compare it to.

I wonder how much better the LG Z2 77" scored vs. the Sony 75" Z9K at nearly twice the price?

Very good question that I get asked frequently. First here's the MSRPs:
  • LG OLED77Z2PUA 77" 8K Signature Series OLED TV $12,999
  • Sony XR-75Z9K Master Series 8K MiniLED TV $6,999.

Both have some promotions that help offset the costs. Call your favorite authorized dealer to get your best deal.

The basic differences are that Sony's Z9K has higher peak luminance and less glare and reflection on the screen when light is directly in front of the screen, e.g. an open window directly in the daytime that is directly across from the TV.

Other advantages of the Z9K is its ability to accurately tone map very high luminance graded content, e.g. 4,000 nits or higher.

Finally, and regardless of the ambient light viewing conditions it's a treat to see very high peak luminance content with its full dynamic tonal range and color volume.

Another final thing to consider is the ability to watch native 8K HDR content which is literally stunning on the Z9K. Gaming and YouTube are available in 8K as are several cell phones that have native 8K HDR cameras and native 8K mirorless SLR camera are available from Panasonic, Sony, Sharp and Nikon so you can create your own still and video native 8K HDR content.

If you want to learn more about the advantages of an 8K TV here's a link to our panel discussion we had at Sunday's 8K TV Shootout:

Here's a video that compares the new King of 4K and 8K TVs when we put them next to each other.

The advantages of LG's new Z2 8K OLED TV is the ability to delivery pure black and the emissive pixel by pixel technology that delivers exceptional contrast and excellent low luminance detail. When you see pure black next to it's 900 nots of peak luminance the human visual system sees the images as much brighter then they measure on our meters and test equipment.

Colors fidelity and skin tones are more accurate as is the overall color saturation and color volume better on LG's Z2. Motion resolution is also better on the Z2 as is the detail and perceived sharpness.

Sorry for the long post and hope this helps to understand the differences to expect on these two World Class premium TVs.

It's funny seeing those Kuro shirts. I was Going thru some of my old discs and came across this Kuro demo BD. Forgot I had it. Been years, more like over a decade since I’ve watched it. Don’t recall what’s on it. Think I’ll give it a spin tonight.

Thank you Robert to you and your family and team! Great job as always.

I currently have a Pioneer 60 inch KURO KRP-600A... so I'm assuming the Sony A95K will be a HUGE jump in quality??
