You think the Seventh Seal looked good, wait til you see The Third Man!

I think I have to re-watch the Seventh Seal undistracted, I feel as though I may have missed something. I may re-watch it dubbed . Hey if it's good enough for Criterion to put a dub track on there, it's probably good enough for me to watch.
And then the bonus features, Holy crap there's a lot!

I thought the English dubbed Bicycle Thieves lacked the emotional impact of the original Italian. I'm interested to hear your thoughts on The Seventh Seal English dub.

The Bluray version of The Third Man is the only version I've seen except for TV. I think it has a very cinematic feel in 1080/24p.

Still waiting for my Seventh Seal to arrive.

I finally had the time to sit and watch "the 400 blows" and enjoyed it. But after having done some research, I just realized that Criterion issued "Francois Truffaut's Adventures of Antoine Doinel" on DVD six years ago.

For those who own this DVD collection of Antoine Doinel, is it highly recommended?

Parts of me hopes this would be released on Blu-ray but for some reason, like many other classic films from Criterion's LD and DVD library, not sure if they will be released on BD.

I'll go away from the Criterion discussion for a second, and just say ...

AMAZON IS GREAT....

In addition to the fabulous Blu-ray and DVD prices.... I've purchased a lawn-mower from them (new Scott's real-mower, for $60 less than the Home Depot locally, and NO TAX, and Free shipping (took 4 days or so )

I bought a bunch of stuff for my mother because it's easier to buy it from them and ship it to her for free, than to buy it locally and pay to ship it...... plus it's cheaper anyways.... Amazon is great for many "basic" items too....

Gotta love Amazon

EDIT:

If you don't know about the price tracker here... check it out.... go to the movies tab at the top of this website, and on the right there is an "Amazon Price Tracker/New Deals" link..... GREAT TOOL!

Default Last Year at Marienbad

(Last Year at Marienbad) I've never seen this film but was thinking about Blind buying it tuesday.... What does everyone think of it? (I've actually never even heard about it until a couple weeks ago).......

Also, Can someone tell me what kind of case this is being sold in? Is it in the clear (PS3 like) case like the Seventh Seal comes in or is it in one of those cardboard boxes?

For whatever reason, Last Year at Marienbad is coming in the original cardboard slipcase packaging, which some think is due to the DVD edition also receiving a cardboard slipcase.

I'm also blind-buying this from Amazon, so I guess we will have to compare notes sometime.

It seems VERY interesting, though.

I must say after having received two different packages of criterion blue-rays today: Seventh Seal and Last year of... that they really have blown it with regard to how they package their blue-rays. They have published wonderful blue-rays, but they have probably delivered some of the worst packages at all and worst of all they have been all over the place. First cardboard paper, then the blue case of Benjamin Botton, and now the acceptable but not very exclusive see-through plastic cover.

They should have adopted something like a coffee book as a standard. Pricing their films at the high level should mean that they are also package them in an exclusive way that collectors of their series would appreciate.

I believe Roger Ebert called the film Resnais's joke to film fans.

In my opinion however, it's one of the top ten films of all-time. I think it's a wonderful masterpiece. Challenging for certain, but I think it's wildly entrancing and one of those movies you can just talk about forever. I obviously love it very much and think it's worth a blind buy.

Didn't Roger Ebert also give it a 4/4, too?

I just ordered it from amazon..... I'm sure it'll end up close to the top of my list too. I'm all for challenging, Thought provoking films.... I mean, I'm a david lynch groupie for crying outloud lol

I don't believe so. Maybe in a re-review. But I'm almost certain he panned the film in his initial review.

Regardless: it's wonderful and I'm glad you're giving it a shot. If you're a Lynch fan, then I'm sure you can at the very least appreciate this film. Chances are, you'll love it too!

Just finished watching Seventh Seal on Blu-ray...... excellent transfer. I need to make time to watch some the supplemental material though (and catch up on other material from the other films I haven't viewed yet)

I hope Amazon gets my copy of Last Year At Marienbad out quickly......

Off to check Amazon for the other new titles now

Default the ultimate internal conflict...to buy past Criterion DVD's or not..

I've been tempted in the past several months to purchase classic Criterion titles that I have missed. Pretty much starting from the beginning of the lineup with "Grand Illusion", "The Lady Vanishes", "Amarcord", "A Night to Remember", etc. but I find myself at a crossroad right now because I told myself that I would no longer purchase a DVD.

But I'm literally torn whether or not to do this. I've been debating it for several months now and each time I tell myself to focus on "Blu". But I tell myself, what are the chances of us even receiving these titles on Blu-ray in the near future. Granted, we have seen "the 400 Blows" and "The Seventh Seal" released on BD. But how long will we see more past releases get the BD treatment. Considering that Criterion is still releasing DVD's and fewer Blu-rays.

But there are so many films I want to see that are only available from Criterion on DVD. The thing is...titles such as "Sid & Nancy" are quite expensive.

I suppose I worry that if I start purchasing classic Criterion on DVD, it would be a costly effort. And severe disappointment if these start coming on BD which I ultimately prefer...

Quite a conundrum.

If you are a Fellini fan, there are excellent chances to see another title coming on Blu

If you are a Renoir fan, there are very good chances (overseas).

If you are a Hitchcock fan, you will have to wait.

pro-bassoonist is right, the only info we have on ANY Hitchcock is that WB will hopefully be releasing North By Northwest in Q4 2009.

Yeah I was let down by the cardboard case also... I wouldn't even call them that sturdy as cardboard.

It seems that if the standard DVD release is in a cardboard style case the BD counterpart will have a case that is in the same style. I can imagine that PLAYTIME will be in a cardboard case also. Just too bad since the DVD releases are of stronger paper stock than the BD ones. I think the standard DVD cases for Playtime and Last Year at Marienbad are wonderful since they hold up more so but the BD's are flimsy and cheap.

I have learned to hate them but just roll with it at this point. SO many of us have argued over the cases and the suits at Criterion are aware of consumers being angered over them so it is known but they are just moving forward as best they can. I just wish they noticed how flimsy they cases were. It is almost like they are in the dark, or just don't care.

I have learned to hold onto my old releases for Playtime etc so I know I have a better case to house them if I want to. Unfort. I don't feel like paying double for Last Year at Marienbad for the better DVD case to house the better disc version. I have given up the fight for better cases for releases. Everyone else will have to speak up and e-mail Criterion they more than likely delete all e-mails from my address. I do however give positive feedback as well as negative- the negative over the cases just out weight the positive I guess.

Funny isn't it - crappier the video format the better the case, Worse the case better the video format. I guess you can't have it all.

Why is everyone crying about the cardboard cases? Jeezz...just buy some blu cases and print out the scanned/custom artwork of the films for the cover! They look just as good as store bought! I think the only two that have not been done yet are El Norte and The Last Metro.

While I personally don't care (my copy of The Third Man has done just fine since I got it in December), I can see why people complain: because we're dealing with The Criterion Collection here, who easily has the best overall quality control and consistency of any video distributor in the world, and the cases that they house "futureproof" Blu-ray Discs in are somewhat flimsy at best, even shipping damaged in many instances. Nor are they all that secure; while my Third Man hasn't suffered any damage, sometimes the inner case falls out of the slip sleeve, causing the booklet to fall out. If this were to happen on say, a flight of stairs, you could have the inner case go tumbling down and end up with a damaged booklet, case, or even a damaged Blu-ray.

I don't really understand why they didn't just wait to perfect their clear case in the first place. They never packaged DVDs in this way.
