It shouldn't really need a BD 100, (if encoded competently...), as there's f*** all on there except the movie and a handful of audio tracks.

The Second Sight release has everything on the UHD disc.

The Second Sight release has everything on the UHD disc.
The Second Sight is encoded by Fidelity in Motion (according to the booklet*) and the equivalent part to the Shout (the stream containing just the film, the DV layer, the audio tracks and commentary) is about 78GB, but perhaps they maxed out the bitrate given they knew they had a BD-100 to play with?

I would generally agree, BD-100 seems excessive for a film that's 105 mins long. However as a 16mm film that's very dark in a number of shots, maybe the high bitrate helps that out a fair bit?

Got my Limited Edition from Second Sight. Love the new artwork, 108 page book and lobby cards.

The Picture Quality is fantastic for something that was filmed on 16mm, so glad they found the original negative, the film has never looked better.

Yes. But without the bonus features, it would have been fine on a 66.

Still, you’ve been okay with putting digitally shot movies *plus* features onto UHD66 discs before, I’m guessing this needed the extra bits for handling all that gorgeous 16mm grain so the encode would’ve maxed out a 66.

———————

Anyhoo, got my LE today and yet again it’s another SS LE with lots of fingerprints on the discs, and I’m not exaggerating. One of the discs had half the playing surface slathered with them.

VERY glad to discover that the botched mixing of the training scene from the Koch version has been fixed, the music now cuts out as it should when matey captures Coop.

Ugh. The tarnished disc problem seems to have no geographical boundaries. (Thanks, Geoff.)

Has the second audio glitch been fixed as well? Asking since you explicitely only mentioned this one. Which was also the way more prominent one IMO, but still.

They're not even in the same league, imo. Even if you don't want the extras, Second Sight's standard is still the better release.

You are most welcome. I don't do it for everything I receive but these Second Sight sets are so nice I can't quite resist the urge to show 'em off.

Mine is en route, will likely have it in hand on Monday. I've seen The Descent more times than I can count but always held off watching Dog Soldiers because of the poor treatment it's received on home video. My dilemma now is whether to watch immediately or hold off until my October horror-a-thon That said, it's a good problem to have

On a completely different note, did you enjoy the Japanese Akira 4K release?

I watched SF's Dog Soldiers BD a single time and it was genuinely painful so it has been damn near 8 years since I watched this film. I reckon making the jump from that shit to this UHD will be like watching it for the first time again, and in the way it was meant to watched. I will definitely not be waiting for October.

The Descent is just great and absolutely deserves a similar Second Sight treatment. We can only hope it'll happen eventually, aye?

Yes! Very happy with it, in fact. Absolutely worth the price I paid to import it. I've already watched it twice and reckon I'll be watching it again within the next few weeks, for I'll be introducing a friend to the film. What a way to watch it for the first time.

After reading your response about the SF version, I'm glad I held off. It had been in my wishlist for a long time but I couldn't bring myself to buy it. You're echoing my feelings about it, I can't wait to watch the SS 4K... so maybe when it arrives and again in October

The Descent from SS in 4K? Just take my money. Take it on Day 0. If they'd even announce that they're THINKING about releasing it, I'll contribute to the effort. It's easily one of my favorite horror films, the cave interior filming is incredible.

So glad to read that! It's pricey but a worthy splurge for one of the best animated films ever released. I need to watch it again, that 192kHz soundtrack is an experience unlike any other. And I'm using a soundbar. Granted, a JBL 9.1, but still a soundbar. It's like living through those scenes, just incredible.
