Default TV/movies that don't hold up over time - and those that do.

I was channel surfing last night and came across the end of Predator. I was never a huge fan of the predator movies - but I remember liking Predator I.

I'm watching Arnold and the Predator take turns hitting each other - trading hits, with the obligatory slow mo hit on the jaw with the face turning, spewing huge amounts of blood from the mouth.

As I continued watching it became apparrent to me - this film is just not as good as I remember.

I thought it was laughable seeing the infared vision - not sure how the Predator could see a damn thing - looked horrible.

Then, *Spoiler* -
[Show spoiler] When the Predator sets the countdown to explode it has this incredibly CHEESY, cackle. Wow! Funny I don't remember it sounding so silly.

I've done the same thing with my kid - I'll put in an old movie and find it just isn't good.

So, what films have you re-watched, perhaps from your childhood, that just don't stand the test of time - and which films do?

Movies that don't hold up over time:
Mortal Kombat - when I came out of this from the theater, I thought it was awesome! I don't think I could sit through this now. It's laughably bad now.

Back to the Future 3 - always the weak chapter in the trilogy, but seriously, the "You chicken?!" thing was beginning to wear out its welcome.

Movies that do hold up over time:
The Goonies
Back to the Future 1 & 2

Actually I think the BttF trilogy is timeless. Goonies however does not hold up, for some reason I don't enjoy it as much as I used to.

Annihilation was very bad, but I think the first MK was pretty good and still think so.
As for movies that don't stand the test of time, for me, would be TMNT. I mean, I loved those movies when I was younger but it's just not the same watching them anymore. I still will watch them when they are on, especially the 3rd one, but they don't stand out with me much anymore.

As for movies that do stand the test of time, Karate Kid 1 and 2(not 3)

BTTF 3 was much better than 2! Never cared for Goonies....guess I was too old when it came out to appreciate it.

When was the last time you watched MK? It's almost laughable (imo) how the MK music starts up everytime someone starts to fight.

Definitely agree on Karate Kid 1 and 2 - my kid loved those movies too.

Some movies, even though stuck in that time period by the music and fashions can transcend generations because some things will always be the same.

There will always be bullies and teenage love and finding your place in the world.

Karate Kid 1 is just a great family film.

Mortal Kombat - holds up well, so much so that it's still in my top 20 of all time favorite movies. I still have the snapper case dvd. Would love a blu of this. (Annihilation should be just that....annihilated)

Back to the Future (all 3) - hold up very well...all are great movies

I have to agree with the live action TMNT - those movies just don't cut it, maybe back in the late 80s or whenever I saw them...but I can't sit through them again.

edit:

I'll add Last Man Standing - I thought it was good when I first saw it, tried sitting through it again about 6 months ago and couldn't

The only thing about the Goonies that I find jarring now is Sloth - just seems weird now. But the rest is fun.

Hmmm, maybe I should watch it again - been awhile.

Pretty much any sitcom from the late 80s and early 90s is horribly bad these days. From Full House, Growing Pains, Roseanne, and to yes even Saved By The Bell. They have the most horrific acting and are so very stereotypical and lets face it just plain ridiculous. And of course they all have their obligatory social lesson episodes that were completely useless and also an embarassment to everyone watching them. I watch saved by the bell occassionally and man do I feel a little stupid every time, just hoping no one else catches me watching it. Of course in 20 years people may think that our crop of current top sitcoms are awful who knows, at least on some I will agree I suppose.

While it was one of my favorite movies growing up, the effects from The Neverending Story are pretty comical now. Gmork (the wolf character) used to scare the crap out of me. Now, him and Falkor look so cheesy.

Space Above and Beyond.

It's not even that, however I tried watching it again after BSG finished and it just looks so bad! I used to love this show! Now I am thinking of selling it...

The TV show Land of the Lost. Loved it as a kid. I saw an episode recently and was floored by how ridiculous it was...

I guess most shows one likes as a child would fall into this "doesn't hold up" catagory, though...

Most of those were silly and bad when they were on the air. Roseanne actually holds up very well however.

I still watch Saved by the Bell every morning when I'm getting ready for work, and Full House sometimes on the weekends. I'll admit they aren't great but it brings back childhood memories.

A movie I tried to watch recently but couldn't get past about the 10 minute mark was the 1960s Batman movie. I loved this as a kid in the 80s but it is just awful. I understand it's supposed to be campy but this movie is just over the edge. I turned it off after Robin climbs down a helicopter (actually Batcopter) ladder, leaving nobody flying the Batcopter, because a shark has Batman's leg and he needs to give him the anti-shark repelant, which Batman sprayed on the shark, causing the shark to explode.

"2010" does NOT hold up over time, seems dated and silly. However, the masterpiece "2001" still rules!

Well - that's only Rocky 3.

I remember loving these movies - all the way up till 5 - then lost total interest.
