Me, too. I went full-irresponsible-hog to make sure I didn't miss out on the slips. Massive sucker for great original theatrical art and having all the different cuts.

... I will be forever annoyed if they release all the UHDs in steelbooks with the original art.

I bought these because of the poster art and not wanting to miss out on slips. But I'm not going to rip them open right away and hold off for a bit and see if there's any news on steelbooks.

I figure if they do release steelbooks I should be able to sell my unopened copies with slips and get most of my money back.

But honestly, I'm not sure there will be steelbooks. I'm still surprised that in the whole time of the Blu-ray editions there was only one UK release of steelbooks.

That's some delay. At the time I ordered it, it was supposed to come out next week.

I just noticed the "First Contact" making of book that was supposed to be out last April is now due out in October.

I'm not saying definitively that it won't happen, but it just seems like the last time it was done almost as an afterthough.

For those who don't know, I've been pretty critical about the the new opening titles to the Director's Edition. While I was ok with the direction and intent, something felt off in the final product that was streamed on Paramount+. The titles had a weird thing going on with it's opacity, like someone had set the level to 70%. It made what was once a bright and golden title dull and you could see the stars in the background through the actual letters!

However, yesteryear I stumbled across this review of the 6-Movie 4K-UHD set which posted low-resolution screencaps from the movies. One of the screen caps was of the title before 'The Motion Picture' subtitle faded in. And it looked... different. Take a look. I'll show you what I mean. Top Image from Paramount+, Bottom from 4K-UHD review.

Even though the resolution of the sources are different (Review screenshot was 660 × 371 while the Stream screenshot was 1920 × 800), there's still a noticable difference! The title is brighter, more golden, and appears more solid! It's like the team re-rendered the title at 100% opacity and it looks so much better. I bet the animated sparkles on the edges look much better in this rendition. I hope this turns out to be true and this screen cap wasn't modified.

It could be a difference in how the frame is rendered, purely an encoding issue.

If a 4K and Streaming input are configured differently, it could also explain the difference.

I hope so too!
It looks really much better.

Goddamit we need screenshots from the final product!
Or the final product itself

Both pictures look good to me. I may have a different impression when I see them in motion.

Not the same, the bottom image is maybe a bit oversaturated and colors are burned through... if I had to pick one, I'd choose the top image. But as I said, I don't even know how the text is animated and how it looks in motion.

I don't think the opening credits were officially changed. I think the cap is just low-res and the colors have either been tweaked or interpreted too brightly by whatever software was used to obtain the cap. It looks like it is taken from a 480p telecine.

Don't forget that the bottom image was sourced from a review site that reduced it's resolution to 660×371. That's less than the maximum resolution of a DVD! The top image comes from a 1920×800 so iobviously it will look better in the detail department. I also can't see how user settings would cause the titles to go from a solid bright color to looking darker and transparent. The bottom image better reflects how the titles looked on the 2001 DVD.

It will be very interesting to see comparisons from the Actual Blu Ray and UHD Discs with the Streaming Version.

I dont think they made any changes to the effects. So people that are expecting a new version of the lounge scene for example will clearly be dissapointed.
But other details could very well be a little different......

Would they go the extra mile for all 6 you think? Missing slips and not getting all the steels would be equally frustrating personally.
Releasing SIX individual steelbooks, or even a giant set, seems so over the top considering the NINE separate releases we already have.

I saw the the Fathom screening and although I could see what everyone was talking about the effect wasn't jarringly bad. At least I didn't think so.
The given reason for the title glitter is stupid, though. "Ohhhh! They merged and turned into the titles! It's just like the titles!"

I really hope the DNR ghosting isn't that noticeable in-motion amongst the theatrical/slv/ iii-vi UHDs either.

I'll be bummed out if that's the case. But yeah, might be best to keep expectations in check.

If they do I'm personally blaming you.

Maybe that's why it's 2.39:1 and not 2.35:1.
