Well, if we are taking a survey...

I'm one of those 80's kids who grew up with the movies, and then the later TV series - and I never was much for TOS. I adore the films, but I just have never felt like "OH! Let's watch TOS!" for more than a rare episode or two at a time for a specific reason (showing my S.O. the Khan episode, for example). I honestly don't even know if I have ever really seen every one of them for sure.

I've had the Blu-rays for about a decade, and I've only cracked it open a few times.

ALL THAT SAID...Yes I would be in for 4K. Give me an excuse to really sit down and watch it all beginning to end after all these years.

Anybody know off hand what resolution the current TOS blurays were scanned at? 2k or 4k?

With it being filmed on 35mm, I would definitely buy TOS again when released on 4k. Just imagine the increased color depth!

You’re right, that’s why it’s so cock-eyed when it comes to what player does what. IIRC that feature was removed for the UHD specs, not that it shouldn’t still be implemented as part of BD playback on whatever UHD deck but if it’s still a bit buggy they’re not gonna bovver to do anything about it.

I bought the whole enchilada on laserdisc at a cost of $1200 back in the early '90s. 40 jumbo discs with two episodes each (except for the final episode). I have been immune to prices for Star Trek ever since.
I'd pay a lot again for a rescanned version of TOS, whether 2K or 4K (but would be prepared to pay really silly money for a 4K version!). Would pay loads for HD releases of DS9 and VOY too. I haven't even bought either season of Picard though!

Hell, I just bought the TOS S1-3 Blus again anyway. I had the UK set with nasty digipak sleeveses and the fookin shiny cardboard has started to delaminate and the discs have all this shit stuck to them that’s a ‘mare to get rid of. So I’ve binned those and I bought the Star Trek 50 boxset off of eBay, it was cheaper than buying TOS S1-3 on their own!

Ah, no need to pretend - I think we all know that you actually bought the 50th Anniversary boxset because you were missing the digiwax version of the movies. Who needs 4K when you can have those... whatever they were supposed to be

The good thing about TOS regarding a re-release is there are only 3 seasons and season one is magnificent. Not the slow starter that most folks think some of the spin-offs are.
Also, how expensive to redo all or some of the new FX? I've grown to love so many of the new FX I'd feel a little cheated if they only offered the original FX.
I'd pay a small fortune for it done right
I also wonder if they'd make more money by redoing TOS again or doing DS9 in HD the first time. DS9 would obviously cost a ton of money upfront and how much profit would they eventually get?

I really am glad we did, at least, get 14 or so of the best TOS episodes without the heavy DNR.
I am not the least bit interested in a 4k version of the new effects. I watch the episodes with the original effects. The new effects make the Doomsday Machine episode unwatchable to me. Also the effects in Tholian Web and Immunity Syndrome are better than the new ones.

I'd like to get TOS rescanned in 4K, but some of the updated effects need to be revisited. Some of the early episodes have goofy star fields, and the Enterprise moves a little too liberally in Doomsday Machine.
The Ultimate Computer has the same issue. The ships fighting look like tie fighters out of Star Wars.

I notice that it is very difficult to get a basic copy of the director's cut. Did they underestimate demand or is production of discs that backed up?

I have had a proper chance this eve to compare the new DE and TC discs in the new set, only in BD though. I completely agree with you. In terms of transfer and grain quality the TC wipes the floor with the DE. Disappointed in the latter, very little grain noticeable overall. Shame as I narrowly prefer the DE cut but for me it’s very close between them. I think I will stick with the TC.

Ah, I was just kidding, of course. It's a great set and I almost bought it just for the 5-part documentary (since I already had everything else) but unfortunately something unexpected and far more urgent happened and I couldn't justify the purchase anymore.
Going off topic for one more second, is the Roddenberry Vault worth a purchase? I'm close to buying it but have been hesitating.

I love the Vault. I bought it on release date and I only watch those 12 episodes from the Vault -- never the regular set. Way less DNR and better codec and IMO 10 of the 12 episodes are top tier. The only complaint is how they arranged the deleted scenes. They should have had the deleted scenes for the 12 featured episodes on the same disc as the episode. Instead, for example, they may have the deleted scenes for City...... on a separate disc as part of a featurette.

Sorry if this has been discussed already earlier, but why picture quality in the probe scene drops so drastically? Looks like its been taken from VHS. (Just finished watching SLV for the very first time. It was quite good, not too many unnecessary scenes).

But yeah, that CG has not aged well. It didn't look good to me at the time, I hated how they did the ships in CG but kept the lighting static as if it was still a '60s miniature shot quick and dirty as needs dictated, such a silly thing to do. Either update the VFX or don't, instead it's this halfway house that is indeed more fluid and dynamic with the camera moves but is lit in the most incongruous old-fashioned way. So I wouldn't be opposed to that getting redone either.
The other problem with 4k is the obvious use of doubles. If they could do a branched version with cgi ‘fixing’ the doubles, alongside the original version, that would be most excellent

So the version that has virtually all the scenes included has no unnecessary scenes? I guess they were all necessary!

And I agree once we get to 4K resolution we might be able to figure out that some of the actors were being doubled in the fight scenes. Up till now it's incredibly hard to spot a stunt double but with 4K we might just begin to notice.

Seriously? The new effects sure make the spacial areas around the two ships look much better. The E is actually firing at a decent velocity instead of crawling at 2 miles an hour.

My OCD gets the better of me causing me to not be able to enjoy the enhanced FX for the TOS. They updated the ship and sets but then during the credits at the end of the episode it is the original versions. Bugs the hell out of me.
