This is a great article for those of us that appreciate the advantages physical media offers, and for those who may want a little insight into why we are so passionate about this hobby. I especially loved this quote:

Quote:
We’re not incentivized to buy a Blu-ray when it’s so much easier to just check out the movie with a few clicks of the remote or touchscreen. But the trade-off for that ease-of-use is us offering ourselves up as the product, our viewings meant only to be another delivery system for conglomerates to gather our data and enrich themselves via our attention.
I have bought many movies that may not have been my favorites, but which offered special features that not only shed new light on the movie but provided in depth analysis of the filmmaking process and the journey to bring it to the screen. Almost every Ridley Scott disc has an excellent documentary and some are longer than the feature itself. If you've never seen it I highly recommend The Furious Gods: Making Prometheus on the 3D Prometheus Blu-ray. It is an almost 4 hour documentary on the making of the film from conception to release. It's worth the price of the disc alone.

I know some Digital movies offer special features with purchase, but those are not a guarantee and 9 times out of 10 these days they are just fluff promo pieces that are included on the disc as well. But studios have no incentive to produce the deluxe special features from the height of the DVD era because very few streaming viewers will scroll down far enough to look at the special features, much less watch them.

This from memory so may have errors, I believe the Sony, Oppo and Reavon all were/are based on MediaTek SoC. Have not looked into which processor is used in each brand and model.

For Blu-ray I can not see any difference between my Oppo and Sony, for UHD Blu-ray the Oppo does better on tone mapping than the Sony as displayed on my Sony projector. If I had the newer Sony UHD Blu-ray players that could be different.

I agree Backblaze is a really good source for HDD info. Also keep in mind their drives operate in a online 24/7/365 commercial environment.

My Synology NAS is > 10 years old with two WD drives and still going. I have it go into hibernation after 10 minutes of no use so it probably is offline > 20 hours each day. The Zappiti NAS is only on when we intend to watch something via the NAS. My NAS drives see very light duty but I purchased drives rated for NAS use (WD Red Plus). I have some seldom used anymore IDE HDD's that are > 25 years old.

My Zappiti has its own thing and does fairly good with movies, TV is hit or miss.
For television, I'm just not gonna add them to Home Theater 4.0 and view them directly from the Media Center (the one without all the pretty pictures). I have a particular way I like to name TV episodes and don't care for how Home Theater 4.0 has you choose episodes. What I've also done is connect my 5 TB external SSD to the Z9X's USB and added the Samba location to Quick Access in Windows, allowing me to copy from the computer whatever series I am currently watching and keep the computer off during playback. Television shows are just so much better without the noise of the PC fans. The movies will all stay on the server, so that I don't have to turn the NAS on just to watch an episode or two on the weekend. When the NAS is off and I have a new movie to watch, I will just temporarily put it on the SSD over the Samba share, instead of turning on the NAS needlessly. I'm not one of those people who keeps it running 24/7.

I'll try to name all the movies according to TMDB and move the special features this weekend. Thanks, Wendell, bhampton.

TVdb also would have had me name Batman according to the air date order instead of production order, which is a giant no no. Seven episodes to find out what happened in The Cat and the Claw? Two episodes to find out what happens in Robin's Reckoning? Hell no.

I've upgraded before but I think I'll skip this time.
The fact the remote charges with USB C is no issue for me.
I wouldn't use anything but the Ethernet model.
My AVR won't pass HDR10+ even tho my projector does support it.
Slightly faster user interface is also no biggie.

Now, if I never had one this would be the one to get most likely. But, I don't think this update does anything for my use case. All said, I'm pretty enthusaistic about ATV4K so time will tell.

Like Brian, think I will pass. My streaming viewing is down to very little these days. As I use a URC MX-980 remote it is hoped Apple retained the IR control of the new model, just in case there is a change of mind.

I’m keeping my first gen ATV4K. Adding an HDR10+ which, IMO a dead format anyway, is not making me wanting to upgrade.

I probably will. I know someone that works at Apple and they can get me a 15% off hardware discount. It'd be like $139 shipped with sales tax. I'd get the one with Ethernet/WiFi. I will pre-order mine closer to release date, though.

I like digital, however ITunes and Vudu removed the 4K version of The Edge of Tomorrow in 4K for a sizeable time period when they announced it was coming out on 4K Blu-ray & only got the HD version which is like watching a movie in SD to me now. I NEVER pay to rent or buy a movie if it's HD.

Saw Halloween Ends in my local theater.

I feel so bad for anyone so cheap they watched this on PeaCock esp with ads. My neighbor wanted to but I suggest the local theater and there was 4 total people including myself there.

I wanted to see this in theaters but we have way too much going on at the moment and couldn't find a time to go within the next few weeks so we decided to watch it at home. I have ad free Peacock though so at least we didn't have to deal with ads.

With that said, after watching it I'm glad I didn't give it any money, and I RARELY say that about a movie. I actually really liked Halloween Kills and hoped they would close the trilogy strong. But this one was just terrible. I understand the themes they were trying to present but it was handled so clumsily and ineptly that it lost all resonance. Very disappointed.

Sorry to hear that.

I must have been in the perfect mood for it because I loved it.

Edit - Wow Steedeel is STILL banned. I've only ever been banned for 24 hours and that was for openly attacking another forum member in the worst possible way. (not proud of that but it was retaliation for a similar personal attack on Steedeel) I value my ability to contribute here but I think if any place banned me now I would just take that as a chance to move on and never come back.

FYI, for most Peacock movies, including Ends, they only show about 90 seconds of ads at the beginning. There are no ad interruptions during the film.

Thanks for the info. With any luck I would have otherwise never known.
