Default Friday the 13th prequel series

somehow this isn’t a joke.

https://variety.com/2022/tv/news/fri...er-1235418509/

Quote:
Peacock has given a straight-to-series order to a “Friday the 13th” prequel currently titled “Crystal Lake,” Variety has learned.

Exact plot details are being kept under wraps, although it is described as an “expanded prequel.” The show will be written by Bryan Fuller, who is also the showrunner and an executive producer. Victor Miller, who penned the original film in the franchise, will also executive produce along with Marc Toberoff, Rob Barsamian, and A24. A24 will also serve as the studio behind the series.

“’Friday the 13th’ is one of the most iconic horror franchises in movie history and we were dying to revisit this story with our upcoming drama series ‘Crystal Lake,’” said Susan Rovner, chairman of entertainment content for NBCUniversal Television and Streaming. “We can’t wait to get to work with Bryan Fuller, a gifted, visionary creator who I’ve had the pleasure of being a longtime friend and collaborator, along with our incredible partners at A24, in this updated version for Peacock that will thrill long-standing fans of the franchise.”

This makes sense with the rights being split. Miller owns everything from the first movie.

yeah, right? i mean… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

i don’t even know where you go. did you ever need to know more about mrs voorhees?

is this going to be a summer camp drama and just a reveal at the end to lead up to the drowning? is this going to be one of those “trauma” nonsense series where “they explore the trauma of mrs voorhees after she loses her son?” do you have the event happen at the beginning?

there are a lot of ways to go, but all of them are uninteresting. how do you take a pre title sequence and think “sure, there’s ten hours of material here.”

ok. don’t know why i’m thinking about this…

a rights issue means they can only use stuff from the first movie, but jason is in the first movie, and he tries to kill adrienne king in her dream. so you can have jason kill, but not big jason or zombie jason? how does that all work?

wouldn’t it be easier to just do a remake of the first movie? are they really going to hire a writers room for this?

maybe this is just a ploy to get miller and cunningham to come to a deal. like, miller gives him some points for a share of the sequel stuff? i don’t even know

this makes less sense the more i think about it.

All I want from this prequel is the unrequited romance between Steve Christy and Sandy the waitress.

The timeline with Pamela is 1957 to 1979. I would think they would expand on the years after Jason's death as she keeps the camp from reopening.

but have you really ever thought “we need more mrs voorhees backstory?”

this is doubly hilarious since they just released halloween ends and one of the main complaints is “not enough michael myers.”

I will reserve judgment until I decide to watch it or not.

Yeah, not sure about how many people are clamoring for a Mrs. Vorhees backstory, LOL. But, hey, Friday the 13th is a stagnant IP or whatever so in lieu of new stuff they might as well try it. LOL.

Honestly, does anyone really find the Friday the 13th films to be seriously good? I get that they are just low budget slashers and aren’t looking to be the next Godfather saga. They were somewhat scary or interesting as a young kid but now? Yikes.

Michael Myers? We’ve had TOO much of him since the end of the first film, IMO. It’s like: why don’t y’all actually just kill the guy? Cut off head. Burn to a crisp. Poison. It’s so stupid that he’s alive. Must have great state sponsored health care.

They did go with that in

i feel like it’s the dumbest things for studios to just be like “the IP is stagnant. might as well make something.” it’s anti-art. not that friday ever had high aspirations to begin with. but the idea that it is just sitting there and will automatically be a success… you never know.

there is a lot of revisionism with the franchise. these were a product of the times. a lot of the sequels didn’t really make that much money. (which is the only reason they stopped making them)

the first three aren’t “great” movies, but they are fun movies.

you can’t really reinvent friday. that’s not the point. these were basically the same movie over and over. and that’s what worked. we don’t more backstory. people only care about jason killing teens. that’s it.

we don’t need body switching nonsense or back story. they over complicate things.

here’s another thought. (and not jump on it before it airs, but based on what they say)

this is going to be for peacock. so what, no nudity then? pass. no one has ever come to friday for “great storytelling.” and it’s A24. so what does that mean? is this going to be a boring family drama about grief at a camp? just give me jason killing teens and boobs. that’s it. that’s all i want from a friday movie.

the first eight movies are like twelve hours if you wanted to marathon them. but as a series, these will probably be like 45 minutes each. and they’ll probably be ten episodes a season. but he said they wanted to do two seasons. so it’s going to be more than watching all the current films on… what made jason jason? (money. that’s it.)

another thought… the relationship to media has changed. how did i watch these so much? they were played all the time on tv. for as much as i’ve seen them, i hardly ever went out of my way to watch these. i flipped channels and it was on. i have that first wb boxset and i’ve watched them all once, with the exception of part 3 i’ve seen three times over the last ten years. but i would say that 80-90% of the times ive ever seen these, was just catching them on tv.

so now, we’re going to have it on peacock, and probably not network tv. but are curious enough to sign up for peacock just to see this? (if you don’t have it)

for the amount of money they’re going to spend on this, why not just do something like put out part 3 in 3D as a tour?

A24 and Bryan Fuller's involvement does raise a minimum of interest in me; other than that, I couldn't care less about a F13th prequel series.

I’m just waiting for the announcement that Fuller has left the show. The man has a horrible track record of not sticking around, half the time leaving before the pilot even premiers.

With that said, I really hope this doesn’t end up being a summer camp version if “Bates Motel”…

A24 and Friday the 13th in the same article sounds like an oxymoron, like Michael Bay and The Criteron Collection.
