Japan screened In the Realm of the Senses and Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence back in December ‘21. The latter got a 4K restoration.

After quick research, found some footage of the new restoration. Much darker, stronger blues and greens although I’m hoping this won’t affect the clarity and depth. Nonetheless, I’m hoping that Criterion upgrades this.

EDIT: Although Japan didn’t screen this, In the Realm of the Senses AND Empire of Passion got a 4K restoration that Umbrella Entertainment released on Blu-ray earlier this year.

So is Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence a good Christmas movie? After showing A Haunted Turkish Bathhouse at Thanksgiving, I’m on my last straw for holiday family movie night.

If you want to feel depressed during the holidays, it's a perfect Christmas movie.

Yeah, if you really want a nice Christmas movie for the family I'd go with Virus: Day of Resurrection (1980). I'm sure you will all be thankful for each other after that one. Just make sure to find the 2 and half hour cut which is free on Youtube with a pretty nice transfer.

Nothing says Christmas like watching a film about an entire family slowly dying. Gets you real festive.

Finally got to my copy of Devil in a Blue Dress 4K this weekend and damn does this film look amazing, also such a fun take on the noir genre. The chemistry between Denzel and Don Cheadle is infectious. This was a first time watch and I was enthralled, will watch again!

Watched One Night in Miami last night and was floored by how good it is. Smart, talky ensemble dramas are my thing, and seeing how Powers/King took an unlikely, under-talked about meeting between 4 black 60s icons at a crucial juncture in history to create both an absorbing character study and a fiery examination of African-American responsibility in the face of civic/economic repression was nothing short of miraculous.

The characterizations of the 4 main principals were remarkable, not just superficially, but in making us see beyond their statuses of world class athletes, entertainers and demagogues as conflicted, embattled human beings.

I could have watched another few hours of this. This is a wonderful accompaniment to Criterion's releases of Malcolm X and When We Were Kings.

I hope Criterion does a 4k of Fisher King next year.

I tried to watch Four Adventures of Reinette and Mirabelle last night and it didn't play. Bugger - I remembered your post and now I became victim. So I put in the DVD instead and after 70 minutes the picture froze and the player started chugging away worringly, so I abandoned ship. I wanted to discount any issue with my player, so I loaded up another non-Rohmer disc and received the error "This disc is authored to play on region B devices". Eureka! So I flipped my multi-region player to region B and the Four Adventures of Reinette and Mirabelle BD played absolutely fine.

As you are, presumably, region A I thought it worth mentioning on the off-chance - when I initially tried to play the blu-ray, it doesn't give you any warning text, it just doesn't load past the LG menu screen, so it looks like a faulty disc.

I wouldn't be surprised if the next Gilliam UHD was Time Bandits, given that it's a Janus Films title.

On that scale, I'd say Mon Oncle Antione has got it beat.

I can't seem to find anything online, but wasn't it stated somewhere that Criterion would be releasing Coda? Or was it another Apple production? Any help would be appreciated.

Haneke Trilogy. Digipak or single Scanavo with 3 discs crammed inside inevitably leading to loose discs?

I think it's just speculation because Criterion is releasing Velvet Underground which is an AppleTV+ production.

That would be terribly ironic if Criterion releases Coda. They never put SDH on supplemental features unless it's a bonus feature film.
