Disney Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (2023) [Never in 3D]

RealD posted an Indiana Jones promo on facebook and instagram, which almost certainly means we are getting a 3D release of this. Very exciting news!

It's not actually called the Dial of Destiny, right?

Being a 3D fan, I hope this is a stunning conversion. Being an Indy fan, I'd rather see Temple of Doom or The Last Crusade given a bang-up post conversion.

I’d rather see the best one, Raiders, get a bang-up post-conversion. But of course I’d definitely take conversions of the other two as well. The fourth one would first need to be converted into a good movie.

I guess, after "Mission Impossible: Fallout" and James Bond "No Time To Die" another absolutely blockbuster first 3D entry with NO 3D disc. Another bummer incoming with home media announcements next year...

Hope something happens!

Whats with the next Transformers entry? Did they cancel 3D completely now?

I’ve always really enjoyed the fourth movie. I didn’t grow up with Indy, so for me there was only a few years between seeing the first three and the follow up and I thought it was a very fun movie. A lot of the criticisms of it I saw online were all very generic and fangry (angry fan, I just made that word up, you’re welcome) and reminded me of all the hate Avatar got when it was cool to hate it because it was immensely popular.

I understand why some people don’t like it, but I couldn’t stand the complaints about things like realism in a series that has never been realistic. Peak fanger.

Personally I think Temple of Doom is a much worse movie, but I’d still love to see all of them get conversions. They’re the kind of movies that suit 3D perfectly!

It’s all downhill from the CGI gopher. Temple of Doom is a masterpiece by comparison IMO, which itself doesn’t hold up that well, although when I saw it in the theater at age fifteen I thought it was the greatest movie ever.

Does Raiders have much to convert into a good showpiece? 3D could help the famous boulder, but then maybe not. I guess there are some desert vistas that could look nice...sadly I think we know that the spirit inside the Ark wouldn't be popping out and swirling around the theater though.

The first 3 Indy films cause the viewer to not care that they're unrealistic, Indy 4 gets flak because it lacked that same magic. Nobody got bent out of shape over Indy atop the sub in Raiders, everyone scoffed at nuking the fridge. Like the prequels, I suspect it was because Lucas discovered CGI and no one stopped him from going buckwild with it, and the CGI also didn't look believable, which was incongruous with the prior 3 films looking like they were on location. Somehow Lucas upped the stakes but made them lamer, like how Raiders' snakes were more of a threat than CGI piranha ants.

For me, a problem was that LucasArts had already done an "Indy vs the Soviets" installment and it was so much better realized than this.

The only thing we can be certain of is that Disney will not release this on 3D Blu-ray.

But this will be after Avatar 2 has reinvigorated the 3D industry and new 3D tvs will be in every household by then lol

Yeah I won't hold my breath.

Anything is possible but Disney are so obsessed with Disney+ that I can't see them going back to the good old days of giving home cinema enthusiasts the opportunity to watch their 3D movies at home, maybe Avatar 2 will be an exception but if that happens that will be thanks to James Cameron and not because Disney care in the slightest about 3D.

As for paying to see this theatrically, I need the ending spoiled for me first, if the leaks are true then I'm not wasting my money on that.

Interesting development. When the recent Jaws conversion was announced, there were some of us who thought that among classic Spielberg movies, Indiana Jones might have been a more promising choice, and of course earlier in the year when Treasure of the 4 Crowns was released, Indiana Jones comparisons were also made. Not to mention Jivaro, also rereleased this year, which has a proto-Indiana Jones sequence.

I didn't think there would be an actual 3D Indiana Jones movie. If it gets 3D release locally, I will certainly check it out.

The trailer has some moments that should lend to good 3D, notably the ticker-tape parade.

Sorry, but the last 45 minutes of Temple of Doom is the most fun in any of the Indy films. Ripe for 3-D conversion.
So now, looks like most of us have a favorite film or segment of Indy films. So why don't we agree that a 3-D converted set of all the films would be the most desirable.

I think the most realistic ray of light for the 3D community going forward is VR. VR does actually appear to be pushing studios into making 3D content again, even if just to have for their library coming up. What remains to be seen is if VR can kickstart a 3D TV or glasses free 3D experience at home, but I think what is most plausible is streaming apps having dedicated VR sections, and then enthusiasts making a download or rip of this (as has happened for any content on streaming services ever) and then being turned into a 3D Blu-ray or similar format. I’d prefer if they just sell us their damn movies, but studios seem so averse to doing that these days.

Slightly off topic, although realistically this might be the best chance we have to ever watch this movie in 3D at home.

I honestly was not even going to bother with this installment. If it's in 3D then it looks like I'll have to afterall.

VR requires Stereo 3D for most games, so it has a good link, that's true. At the moment though, Sony is being stubborn and not releasing blu ray 3D support for their PSVR2 headset due in February 2023. Maybe Avatar 2 3D can inspire them by some chance. Sony having once been a leader of 3D with their 3D Worlds logo.

Not a spoiler, but I'll spoiler tag it just in case:
As far as any rumors of
[Show spoiler]anyone taking over Indy's role at the end of the film, the director confirmed the rumors are false, and no one will be taking over Indiana's role in this film at all. With Indy 4, it seemed like they were suggesting that Shia LeBouffe guy was going to take over, which would've been tragic.

Good point about those films not having a home 3D blu ray version sadly yet. Maybe Avatar 2 can inspire it? I hope the new Transformers Beast Wars film has 3D to get me into the theater to see it. Without 3D, I'll pass.

This Indy 5 film though seems interesting. I'm very surprised to hear it has 3D too. Cool.

Anyone who has seen Disney works in the last few years knows exactly where this is going: Riri Williams. It'll be like Disney's own take on their inherited Logan, but not as beloved.

Excepting the VR folks on here, my experience with that community has been that they're not down with the idea that VR extends stereo 3D, "3D is a gimmick, VR looks like you're there"

Perhaps ironically, seeing 2D footage of VR makes it look like a massive gimmick, Sony especially would be smart to provide 3D footage.

Indiana Jones will be de-aged for his younger moments in the film, which is interesting to hear. I imagine for the dialog, they can have Harrison do the motion capture, and then for the fights, have a stunt man do the work understandably, with Ford being 80 and less agile compared to his youth.

I hope Dial of Destiny is a strong 3D conversion as there is potential for the visuals as others mentioned.

That reminds me of when PSVR1 first was released. Guess how clear Sony made it that PSVR1 had stereo 3D visuals? 0% clear. I actually had to research further in from those who tested the unit to learn it turns the game into stereo 3D visuals, because the only thing Sony mentioned in all of their packaging and promotions of PSVR1 was "3D Sound" which is a fancy way of saying surround stereo sound, and absolutely nothing about stereo 3D visuals. It was terrible promotion, as I wanted to hear from Sony firsthand, that PSVR1 was in fact a stereo 3D gaming device. Of PSVR fan/game review videos, it's rare the term 3D is ever used from what I've seen too.

With PSVR2, once again, no mention at all of stereo 3D visuals, which for me, would be a major selling point.

I guess Sony didn't think it was important... Just like they no longer seem to think home 3D with their "3D Worlds" is important to them anymore. They support something, and then bail out when it doesn't rake in the profits as much. They really need to add blu ray 3D playback for the PS5, but nothing yet, even though it supports DVD, Blu Ray and UHD... Sony has an "all or nothing" approach to things unfortunately.

What you describe for Indy 5 could be OK, but the leaks sound like Disney is committed to another direction. The de-aging CGI in the trailer is taking flak for being visibly poor (eg: head not aligning with body) a casualty of Disney's VFX houses being overworked? Frankly I'm a little perplexed as the character that the punditry is saying is Bad CGI Indy does not look like Indiana Jones at all to me

When PSVR1 announced, part of the marketing was how it could be a social activity because it would show on the TV what the person saw through the headset. But no 3D TV support, it's as though Sony decided to kill 3D with the PS4, I only have one 3D game on it, and their PS3-D games that were "remastered" for PS4 had the 3D support stripped out, it's like overnight Sony went from 3D's cheerleader to treating it like a film critic treats HFR.

IMO seeing VR gameplay in 2D does not sell it, as it looks like any other 2D video game, only with these disembodied hands floating in the scene. I know at least one VR YouTuber who is burning a torch for 3D, maybe a bro'd be amenable to uploading 3D footage of VR to YouTube.

Y'know, "Dial of Destiny" sounds hokie as all get-out to me, but is there a third D word that they could coax in there to make the title meta 3D?
