To that end, though: I can't recommend the DS Lite enough to anyone who loves good games.
Price for pound: It's the best value for you dollar in gaming, hands down. All the DS games plus all the GBA games.

Agreed, the DSlite is a great portable...however aside from New Supermario Bros...the re-hashed mario64, Mario Kart and Tetris...I see no point in owning this system anymore. I own the same 3 games I bought with the system:
*New Super mario (done)
*Tetris (still playing)
*Castelvania (played twice) <--Impulse buy
I see an eerily familiarity with my Gamecube, bought these games with the system:
*Metroid
*Mario Sunshine
*Mario Kart
*Star Fox
haven't bought a game since (except cars the movie game for my son)
The there was n64
*Mario64
*Killer Instinct Gold
*Mario Kart
Never bought a game after that.
With my SNES I was continually buying games as there was always something cool and exciting comming (had real 3rd party support) and the NES was the same way.

Until they get down to substance.
Sony and MS are going to pump out a lot of these games that look and sound great, but they're going to be polished turds. Make no mistake about it.

None of the games are out, so this is speculative and not fact.

This is where Nintendo is going to have an edge, and arguably always has: Quality over quantity, when talking about software and games.

Nintendo has been good with it's first party games, I agree. But they have also been very stubborn in changing. They continually release the same franchises over and over. And while this is there success, it has also brought them many failures. How many mario sports titles do we need? they pretty much all suck. Princess this, Yoshi that...if we are gonna rehash old franchises...bring em all back! Gyromite, Kid Icarus, Duck Hunt!

I agree with you that they should have included HD and DD and all that. I would have easily paid the extra $50, at most, that those things would have required.
|
I'd have even been okay with the 480p/16:9 mandatory as long as Dolby Digital was required or even an option!

In the end: People buy Nintendo systems for the software and first party titles, above all else.

True Dat!

Believe me: There's nothing even remotely "loser-ish" about that new Zelda title forthcoming, for one example.

It is when it looks exactly the same as the Gamecube version of the same title, only differences being the inclusion of the nunchucka. next gen should look next gen, not just require a different controller.

In fact, for a non HD game? That looks downright stunning.

Cut scenes look great, in game looks...meh, great by last gen standards.

And the $250 price tag is going to turn heads left and right.

only time will tell, i'll bet the line for these on launch day ismuch smaller than that of the xbox360's launch or even the ps3. I'd be willing to put a small wager it's on par with what we saw when the psp launched.

You seem to have a little Nintendo hate going on in some of your posts...
Don't underestimate them. Don't count them out. The virtually guarnateed PS3 shortages is going to be a short term boon (at least) for the Wii. Make no mistake about it.

I was once the Biggest "N" supporter around. I've owned all their systems except for the virtualboy. Nintendo has failed me on several occassions. First with letting down their excited public with the SNEScdrom which later became Playstation, failing by releasing another cartridge based system in the n64 of which got pummeled by their own partnered technology they chose to can. Then they release the GCN, and it's 3" and the comperable ps2 & xbox versions of games have more content. Then they lack in 3rd party support for two console generations. Now they release a last Gen console and call it "next gen" then as we like to call it here with sony being the king of double dipping...talk about nintendo!
how many versions of the Gameboy, Gameboy advance, And now Gameboy DS do we have to have? granted they are all improvements...but damn its frustrating when you buy the crap one first!
Nintendo just seems like they are out of touch from a marketing standpoint, but have scored some kick ass developers and the truth is, if those guys developed on other systems...those games would kick ass anywhere. but they don't so I guess if we want to see the old plummer getting busy or march Link over hirule then we have to buy nintendo! For me, i'm cool with what I got..when nintendo decides they want to do HD i'll potentially hop onboard, til then my DS will be the stop gap and Gmaecube will continue to collect dust until it's last hoorah when Super paper mario comes out.
