Took a look at this article. Why the hell would they remove the spores and replace them with a tendril. The spores were way more menacing.

I could easily see them taking the flashbacks in part 2 and turning that into the second season, done in real-time, as Bella grows older. Then season 3 is the present day content for part 2.

They felt that viewers would question the spores and why it's not spreading throughout the air and outside of the confined spaces we experienced in the game. As such anyone breathing air anywhere could become infected.
