Reeves relented and went with native 3-D, but kept the I/A narrow so he could still essentially not worry about any problematic 3-D shots later.
When it came time to plan for WAR OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, conversion technology had advanced enough where Reeves was able to shoot in 2-D and convert later. Ironically some of the 3-D shots in War have a bit more depth than Dawn, but not by much.
I really like these first three of the rebooted series, and even with some minor nitpicking aside, feel they try to explain things better than the original series. As for the 3-D, it of course could have been better but I'm glad we at least were able to see these on 3-D bluray. Hopefully the eventual KINGDOM OF THE PLANET OF THE APES sees a 3-D bluray release as well.

Cool, thank you for the 3D details, Greg. Yes, it definitely has a short look to the depth as everything is pressed together in 3D space as I watch the opening native 3D shots in the forest. Making the forest seem less dimensional actually. But him not wanting to film in 3D could explain some of the issues, thanks. It's definitely a learning curve on the set and a pro-sterographer there at all times would really help smooth out the difficulties.
That's true, it's good we got them on blu ray 3D. I'll keep an eye open for War of Apes blu ray 3D, which I don't have on disc yet.
