Hoping The Mattei Affair can be released. However, it's not a fairly accessible work in terms of historical context because I'd assume most viewers wouldn't understand the story of Enrico Mattei as much as Italians who saw this when it first came out. Nonetheless, it is very rich and fascinating piece of history.

The film was restored by The Film Foundation little over a decade ago (2012 or 2013). The print is not in the best condition (Few damages), but it looks good for the most part (Has a yellowish tint, which may not be good news for some). Don't know what's going on with this title but unsure whether or not a release is coming soon since it's not a title in high demand. This is one of those films that I think is hard to understand because of the historical context of the film.

I'm skeptical about the MWFTE announcement. The steel book design is too good to be true, and it's Discfather, who I don't really trust. Nonetheless, I have a good feeling it's coming out in the US real soon since it's been announced in European regions. Definitely one of my favorite films and at this point, I'd be fine with a 4K steelbook or a Criterion 4K since I need to retire my Criterion DVD.

Would love some Suzuki titles for May on what would have been his 100th birthday.

I feel like either Branded to Kill 4K UHD or Youth of the Beast Blu-ray will be announced. BtK was the winner for best restored film in the Venice Film Festival last year and YotB is turning 60 this year, which may be a sign (Although it's all pure speculation).

I saw it when it was on the Criterion Channel a few years ago as a part of their 30th Anniversary celebration of the Film Foundation. I thought the restoration looked good. Perhaps it's because of my politics, but I easily understood it as being about a guy who wanted Italy to profit off it's own oil instead of having foreign companies profit off it at the expense of the locals (something which happens all too often in much of the world really, it's usually a form of neocolonialism).

I think the fact that it is a niche film makes it hard tell when it would ever get released. But at least according to Jon Mulvaney they'd love to release it.

Criterion has released other Francesco Rosi films, like the also rather politically specific Hands Over the City (1963) so The Mattei Affair shouldn't be a problem if they know how to market it right.

I was hoping a release would be imminent two years ago when it popped up on the channel, but that hasn't happened, and it's long been a most wanted title, even before I got to see it because of it's Palm D'Or winning status. (I've also been waiting for a release of the Egyptian film The Night of Counting the Years (1969) ever since it left the channel nearly two years ago, and I know Janus films has the rights to it, so it's inevitable, but it still hasn't happened ).

Honestly Criterion Channel should just run ads since it seems they have no money to put out any 4K's I want at this time or for the last half decade. I mean what's their problem no 4K Samurai or Kurosawa films and everyone else? They can't release just 1 on the 4K Format? Pff. Get real.

Sorry if this has already been asked; I searched the thread and didn't see anything.

Is there any chance of Criterion releasing a Fernando Di Leo Polizioteschi Collection? Not at least his Milieu Trilogy?
Been watching them on the Criterion Channel and now I'm eyeing Arrow's Caliber 9, and Raro's two volumes.

Highly unlikely, considering the nature of the films, let alone the very fact that Raro still seems to have those in the US.

The BD of Salo just dropped to $31 CAD on Amazon.ca. I was debating it but decided to finally grab it at that price.

Yeah, same here. The price doesn't drop below $30 during an Unobstructed View sale, so I decided to take the plunge on this notorious Pasolini film!

I previously mentioned this in an earlier posts, but it's all contingent upon what Japanese studios will and won't let be released. From what I've read on Anime News Network in the past, Japanese people can be slow to adapt new technology (ironic considering their image as such a high tech society).

I have a feeling Japanese studios are a little skeptical of 4K releases. I checked and Seven Samurai doesn't have a 4K ANYWHERE in the world, including Japan.

If the studios won't either create a 4K master or let Criterion make one, there is little they can do.

I would love to see Youth of the Beast get a US upgrade to Blu-ray. It's actually my favorite Suzuki film. A very solid film and one of my first Criterion DVD's.

Toho is notorious for being a pain in the butt to work with, especially on their older films for some reason. It seems like they are more willing to license out their newer films with less hassle. It seems like Criterion is one of the few companies that seems to be able to work with them in a functional way, but even then it seems like they have a ton of Toho hoops they have to jump through.

I don't think Hard Eight is going to Criterion. PTA said so in a AMA some years back.

But that's a first for Body Double. I hope there's some truth to it.

There are notes with each entry for why mattheweg, the user who created the list, included them.

I’m imagining it’s the same info that led to this thread.

It might leave a bad taste in your mouth.

I just can't believe this is still not in 4K. Kazuo Miyagawa. Akira Kurosawa. Cast. Yojimbo 1961.

In terms of other films this awards season, Aftersun also feels like a natural fit for them.

I feel like A24 is gonna do a bare retail release and then have one of their nice, collectors edition online store exclusive releases. I’d be real game for the latter.
