Bummed about the Jackie cameo films being included, though, they are actually decent films. I just wish they were released separately or in a trilogy set. Nice both AoG films are included, though. Definitely those and Wheels are the highlight of the set for me.

The inclusion of the first and third Lucky Stars films is kind of bleakly funny, because I frankly doubt Criterion is even going to dump the films they've got into a box all together, let alone release the second one on its own, so you're basically left to buy those two films again from Eureka if you want the other one.

Criterion does have a handful of Jackie Chan films, so I wouldn't be surprised if there is a Jackie Chan set with all of those at some point.

I'm aware; those are the films I'm talking about. I'm saying I don't think Criterion will release those on disc. The titles they have are such an obvious hodgepodge that they'd make for an awkward box set, and I don't think these movies are important enough to Criterion for them to fill up their release schedule with standalones of stuff like Spiritual Kung Fu and Fearless Hyena.

I could be wrong; there's obviously plenty of money in releasing Hong Kong movies right now, and I'm sure a box of those movies would sell. I just think, given Criterion's general slant toward prestige releases and meticulously curated fancy boxes, that a random assortment of Jackie deep cuts probably isn't a high priority for them.

That's a strong lineup of movies compared to volume 1. But... I already bought all the 88/Eureka ones except Crime Story and The Protector, which I own the old Shout double feature on those (and I remember not enjoying The Protector as much).

Very happy to see these released in Region A for everyone to enjoy, but it's most likely a pass for me.

ARMOUR OF GOD -->2.35:1?....leave it to professionals to already be messing up prior even releasing the product. Armour Of God was shot at 1.85:1.

These should of been released by either 88Films or Arrow Films in the US.

Yeah, with Criterion, I have no idea. It would probably sell, but they move to the beat of their own drum even if it doesn't make sense. It is strange that they would only acquire the middle film of a trilogy which they did years ago probably way before Shout got the 1st and 3rd film. Very strange.

There's two others listed with a wrong ratio too!

Yeah, there's that too. That bunch of films debuted as a streaming collection to complement the Police Story movies a few years ago, with no further word since. Criterion's also just got a lot of other big things going on -- Neon, Disney, 4K upgrades. From what I can tell their recent HK releases have been a handful of big titles/stuff from canonized filmmakers to piggyback on the larger trend; they haven't really committed to it the way Arrow has, let alone the smaller boutiques for whom it's a huge portion of their output.

What titles does Criterion have and what source has confirmed it?

I don't feel that bad, at least I have these to be contempt with;

Even Echo Bridge had the decency and respect to give them a single film release each.

A little while after releasing Police Story and Police Story 2 on BD, they also threw Half a Loaf, Spiritual Kung Fu, Fearless Hyena, Young Master, Fearless Hyena 2, and My Lucky Stars up on their streaming platform. This was back in 2020.

Their Channel includes tons of films they will never be able to release on Blu-ray though. Where has it been confirmed that Criterion will be releasing these films?

It hasn't, and they probably won't. That's what I've been saying.

OK, I'm still confused. You're both saying "Criterion has them". What does that mean then?

Criterion has licensed them in some capacity, and judging by the absence of any of those films from Shout's recent box sets, it looks like Criterion's license probably prevents other labels from releasing them on Blu-ray.

So zero confirmation anywhere?

While I understand some people wanting the option, as someone who is always running out of space and has a budget, I love box sets. I'd much rather get 8 films for 80 bucks from shout than 3 films for 90 bucks from 88 Films.

Nobody has come out and said "Criterion's license for these movies includes the physical media rights," no. Shout seems to be picking around those movies while releasing anything else they can get their hands on, though, which strongly suggests to me that those rights aren't up for grabs right now.

Thank you for clarifying. I can see where those assumptions are coming from now. I've just long been confused why people put so much merit in the "Criterion has it" assumptions that often keep rolling for 5+ years for a release that never even materializes. Seems like the rumors become an established fact that fuel endless proclamations. I'm not even sure what the value is in believing in releases that never exist, but I'm an atheist. lol
