I live in small town America.

PLENTY of people have children out of wedlock. Even more are having pre-marital sex that can EASILY CAUSE children out of wedlock.

The Clark Kent of "Superman Returns" (born 1979) would come less likely being a virgin than the Clark Kent of "Superman: The Movie" (born 1952) would. The Clark Kent of "Man Of Steel" (born 1983) would be even less likely to be.

This is NOT a judgement on these people, but rather that the majority of small town America would not be able to pass this particular purity test... especially the younger the generation.

Yes. It was initially released on Blu-ray with standard Dolby 5.1 and then about a year or so later they released an updated SKU with Dolby TrueHD.

He flew off to see Krypton's remains before learning Lois was pregnant. It wasn't like she dragged him onto The Maury Povich Show.

It was released on Blu-Ray in 2006 - one of the first titles for the format - with Dolby Digital 5.1, while the simultaneous HD-DVD release got a Dolby TrueHD 5.1 track. That was remedied in 2008, when WB re-released the film on Blu-Ray with a TrueHD 5.1 track, which had only been available on the HD-DVD and a non-retail version of the Blu-Ray that had only been available as a mail-order exclusive - one of several titles that would later be re-released - that came with the purchase and registration of any of the available Pioneer Blu-Ray players. That mail-order exclusive disc was later reused as the 2008 re-release with TrueHD, but given a new UPC to differentiate it from the original release, and the original disc was - bizarrely - recycled for the Best Buy Exclusive Steelbook release of the film in 2012.

And it's misleading since there are two versions of one of the films.

I hope on the new 4K UHD Blu-Rays of all 4 Christopher Reeve Superman films do improve a lot of issues that where either an issue with the past Blu-Ray releases and the 1st 4K of Superman The Movie like the color of the suit and some of the skin tones are improved. They where fine on the blu-rays but where way out of whack on the 1st 4K UHD Blu-Ray of Superman The Movie back in 2018.

These are getting proper preps for the boxset, including new HDR color grading on the first film.

Of course they can upscale it to a 4K master like they do for many other movies...
Disney got away with it with the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy

If released in 4K, for sure Superman Returns will NEVER be a demo disc, but it will still look better than the old Blu-ray for the following reasons

1) upgrades over the VC-1 video codec
2) 2K is technically slightly higher resolution than 1080p
3) HDR color grading should at least make it more theatrically accurate versus the current 1080p disc

Agreed though also I think some additional work needs done than just an 2K upscale to 4K including the color grading of Superman's suit it has looked awful on every home video release of Superman Returns since 2006. Heck the whole film needs a new color grade. Superman Returns sadly was one of the 1st movies with the teal and orange color grade which is a trend most modern movies are using still to this day.

No Returns sucks. It is one of my favorite superhero movies. Hopefully it gets a standalone.

Note the bolded: those are PRINT stocks not negative stocks, i.e. they're what the movie was shown on in cinemas. Just because film is notated on the IMDB or Shot on What doesn't mean what you think it means, and I don't mean that snarkily as a lot of people make that mistake. I'm not making this up. Always check under source format or negative format.

There was a tiny amount of film involved in the actual shooting of Superman Returns, yes, but it was for the slow motion (conversely known as high speed) shots because the digital cameras of that time couldn't shoot at the much higher frame rates needed for slowmo. The vast vast vast majority of the movie used the 1080p HD Panavision Genesis. It was ultimately finished out to 2K digital and from that digital source master had internegatives filmed out from which to strike the 35mm release prints, as digital projektion was still very much in its infancy in the mid 2000s. This is also how they also created the IMAX 15/70 3D prints, they uprezzed the DSM and filmed out those materials to create prints from, and, again, without being snarky those things mean nothing as regards the actual source material and what can be done with it in the 4K video space.

Returns is 2K digital at source, end of story. BUT I don't see that as a problem either, as this isn't 2016 and we now know that loads and loads and loads of upscales give very good UHD. Genesis was an early digital camera, albeit one with a larger 35mm-width sensor rather than the tiny 2/3" chip of the Sony CineAltas (from which they also created 15/70 IMAX prints for Attack of the Clones! ), but it could bake in a hefty amount of range and as long as the DI for Returns used that raw information then there could be plenty left to mine from it (see: the Genesis-shot Predators which has a stunning HDR grade).

The only thing preventing a Returns UHD from being a big improvement over the crusty bit-starved HD DVD relic is people's imaginations, though that's not a dig at anyone here in particular.
