Release date: 29th May, 2023 July 3rd, 2023

Quote:
In 1978 in Hong Kong, a grisly murder takes place. Eight years later, on a Macao beach, kids discover the severed hands of a fresh victim. A squadron of coarse, happy-go-lucky cops investigate, and suspicion falls on Wong Chi Hang, the new owner of Eight Immortals Restaurant, which serves delicious pork bun. The hands belong to the missing mother of the restaurant's former owner; he and his family have disappeared; staff at the restaurant continue to go missing; and, Wong can't produce a signed bill of sale: but there's no evidence. The police arrest Wong and try to torture him into a confession. Can they make him talk? And what was in those pork buns? Written and starred by Danny Lee (City on Fire, Dr. Lamb) and Anthony Wong (The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, Ip Man: The Final Fight, Ebola Syndrome and Hard Boiled) Anthony Wong also won, The Hong Kong Best Actor Award for this role in The Untold Story.

Never picked up the US release. Hopefully this includes the Cat III doc which was on that.

I wonder if the picture quality will be any different from the US version, which seems to be getting middling marks on the official review here.

I truly like the artwork on this one, but the US version is region free and currently $17 on amazon.

Does anyone know if the picture quality is likely to be any better on this version?

I never actually saw this film before, only Ebola Syndrome, which makes me want to watch this one! How do the two compare for those that have seen both.

If it doesn't then there's a reason to get both.

I watched this at the end of last year. Man it's a wild film. Real nice art on that cover too.

Both are great movies but Ebola Syndrome leans more towards gonzo, dark comedy whereas Untold Story, while still comedic, definitely goes in a more disturbing route, establishing itself as based on a true story.

If you like Ebola, you'll get a kick out of this one.

Yeah I definitely want to give it a go, if I don't like it I suppose I can always sell it. Trying to decide which version to get though. On the one hand, I have a few of the 88 films cat 3 limited editions - the art work and packaging is top notch, also I'm assuming there will be a book with art and essays etc.

On the other hand I am currently doing a US import order, and I have about $7 on my amazon.com credit so I can get this for about $10+whatever it adds to the shipping costs. Whilst I definitely prefer the 88 art and rigid case I'm not sure if the overall package will be worth the extra cost.

There isn't mention of a new scan so presumeably it will look similar/the same, and the documentary is supposed to be good.

Hopefully all the details will be revealed soon so I can make my mind up!

Hard to believe that rape scene got passed the BBFC. Just can't wrap my head around that.

Rape scenes don't seem to a huge deal anymore for the BBFC as long as the movie is rated 18.

Not that I'm an advocate for censorship where adult material is concerned, but it seems odd they've given this incredibly disturbing rape scene a pass, but won't classify I Spit on your Grave uncut.

anyone else remember the obscure blog post someone made many years ago, showing how they located and visited the restaurant used in the making of the film ... they weren't best pleased about any association with it.

anyway. i like herman yau. this is very much at the more decent end of Cat III that i've seen. i would see it again, but, i find 88 having gone from BD for £8.99 at release, and onto BD in some bits of cardboard and paper for several times that more than a little off putting.

That is a great cover.

Never heard of the film. Great. I'll add it to all the other HK shit i'm trying to catch up on. I am overwhelmed this past year w/ all the HK stuff. So much of a good thing.
