Oscar-Shortlisted Bosnian War Drama ‘Quo Vadis, Aida?’ Lands At Neon’s Super Ltd

Neon’s boutique label Super Ltd has picked up North American rights to buzzy Bosnian drama Quo Vadis, Aida?, which is on this year’s shortlist for the International Oscar.

Directed by Jasmila Žbanić, the movie debuted at Venice and also screened at Toronto. It stars Jasna Djuricic and is set in the Bosnian summer of 1995 during the Serbian occupation of Srebrenica, declared to be safe zone by the United Nations. Aida works as a translator for the UN peacekeeping task force in charge of a camp where her husband and two sons are being held along with thousands of other Bosnian citizens. Can a saga of genocide in Bosnia, directed by a woman and focusing on civilians, win an Academy Award for best international film?

A nominee for best international feature film, “Quo Vadis, Aida?” focuses not simply on the Serbs who committed mass murder in Srebrenica in 1995 or the United Nations troops who allowed it to happen, but mainly on the Bosnian civilians who were the targets. The film’s protagonist is a fictional translator for the U.N., played by the brilliant Jasna Đjuričić, who tries to save her family from the carnage that she knows is coming. Written and directed by Jasmila Žbanić, who lived in Sarajevo during its siege by Serb forces in the 1990s, “Quo Vadis, Aida?” has earned a tremendous amount of acclaim and more than a half-dozen prizes at film festivals in Europe and the U.S. [cont.]

Really hope this movie gets some kind of boutique treatment in the future. As it stands, NEON has put it on their streaming-only line, Super Ltd. so its a little slim.

Really deserves to be seen by more people. And I do think personally that it deserves the International Feature Oscar over Another Round.

My #1 movie of 2021. I saw it virtually at TIFF and it blew me away.

A truly devastating piece of filmmaking. Jasna Đuričić (Aida) should be winning every Best Actress Award possible for her performance. That scene at the end literally made me fall forward and sob. I was just broken from her pain.

I agree with you, if this loses the Oscar, it just lets me know the voters haven’t seen it because it eclipses Another Round in every way.

Jasmila Žbanić was recently seen on Bosnian TV and won the Award for Contribution to the Preservation of the Culture of Remembrance:

As for the film, I thought it wasn't great, but rather very bland and anonymous. Better than the two other films I've seen by Žbanić, but that doesn't say much.

It has not gotten a physical disc release in the US, only digital. Yes, that has English subtitles obviously.

Noone has confirmed it yet. Has the Spanish Blu Ray version got English subtitles? And has it got original audio or only a Spanish dub?

I speak Bosnian, so I don't really need English subtitles, but a few parts of the films aren't in Bosnian.

I'm not sure whether to buy the Spanish Blu Ray or wait for the German version (December 2021 release), but that seems to only include German subtitles.

According to this site where there is a picture of the back cover, it says that it only has Spanish subtitles.

My mistake, it was Hong Kong, not Taiwan.

And yeah, their releases are coded to region-A.

Got my copy and confirm that it does have English subtitles.

Also has English subtitles on the few scenes spoken in English - I can't remember if that was the case with the cinema screenings.

If only the Japanese release was region free. I have it and the transfer is stunning.
