My money is on Shout Factory and that this will be a September or October release for them. Regardless of who releases it, if it restores the original Color timing I'll be all over it. For now the Team Blu unofficial release from many years back is still my go to version as it has none of the issues of the Twilight time, Umbrella or Sony release and despite using a Vudu stream for the video, still looks better than all of the above... and I own all of the above and have done the comparisons..

In the same boat. I treasure my Team Blu unofficial release, but if a proper UHD minus previous flaws comes out, I’ll be all over it!

I so want this to finally get the release it needs, but I'm not going to get my hopes up. The only chance of finally getting this right is if Sony have done a whole new 4K scan.

They need to add all the gore back in the movie:

Hopefully a Scream factory release.

I remember seeing the extra gore clips and I'm not sure it would've made me enjoy the movie any more. In fact, I think I appreciated the (albeit imposed) restraint in the R-rated cut.

Having watched the workprint, I would be game if those cut gore bits could be found and made to look like film again. As is, the workprint is only slightly better than nothing, or Within the Woods, and nearly unwatchable due to terrible quality. At least it gets a nearly, all versions of Within the Woods I've found are completely unwatchable.

I also live with and swear by the TeamBlu version.
I thought that was from the Twilight Time scan though, just corrected with home/pro tools. It seems to have the extra picture the TT does but I never saw the Vudu stream. Was that just the same scan minus the darkness? Looks better than any official disc to me at least.

The disc includes 2 versions of the film... a color corrected "special edition" which tried to fix the Twilight Time issues, and then a "Theatrical" cut from a vudu HDX stream which utilized the original look seen on TV and previous releases. (Ie. No overly dark moments). I always watch the theatrical cut as while their work on the special edition was admirable, the added darkness (though improved) still bugged me.

Yeah, the MPAA really went hard on this movie. It really is one of the least violent R-Rated movies I can think of. I would totally be down for an uncut version.

I loved what they did to the TT scan and feel that is probably closest to what TT was going for when they had color correction done by the DP over the phone without seeing anything. It brought back all the gore effects and details that were lost in the TT darkness.

The Vudu version is just a bit too bright IMO, and looks to be based off the old dvd scan. Now I didn't see this in theater so I'm not sure which is closer to what those who did see saw. I just know I sampled both and went with the fixed TT version. Tried the workprint, hoping for better than the VCD I bought off ebay in 99-2000 era, but it's basically the same.

I thought Sony corrected the transfer on their own MOD release of the film?

Are you saying this transfer is just as bad as the Twilight Time release transfer?

Not a total blue disaster, but it's still pretty bad. Think the original Scream release................yeah.

No, it's closer to the TeamBlu version from the screens I've seen. Not quite as bright as the dvd, and not as dark (or blue) as the TT.
The TT is from a better scan though (probably a newer 4K one, so this upcoming 4K could look insanely awesome), you can tell from more picture on the left and bottom.

Love that game. It has the best version of Kevin Smith, also.

The scan used on Sony's Blu-ray could be the same actual scan used on the TT Blu-ray. The TT looked like it used an unfinished master without proper grading and framing. The extra picture on the left and bottom should not have been visible.
