You want:

Player ---HDMI---> Receiver ----HDMI----> TV

If I had to guess you're using a Digital Coax to your receiver, which will not do PCM. Is this "gold cable connector" similar to an RCA? If it's color coded, is it orange?

Edit: I may be wrong, now that I think of if, do any BD players use Digital Coax?
