So what do you guys think of my poor man's DIY sub riser?
![]() ![]() I had to test it out and see if it even made a difference before I started building one. I was pretty impressed with the change so I think I'll try to put one together this weekend. |

Just ordered 2 pieces of 1" foam from Parts Express as i'm going to be building 2 risers for my Front POLK T90e's. The foam is 18x24 so I'll have plenty for each one (might double em' up or use a single layer: not sure yet) & then some for my 2nd Sub. I'll have more than enough left over, which I will put on my little DIY Riser for my Secondary Sub (I "may" build a little DIY Riser for that - tho' I have Limited space as it sits Beneath an End table). The Risers will be approx. 10x16x3 (W/D/H) as the speakers' footprint is 7x13.25", so I'll have a little clearance all around. I plan on using 2x2's for framing & a 3/4 or 1" MDF or Pine on top.

Also, if you move the sub slightly away from the wall and other furniture, it may help. Give it some breathing room. |

The only constructive comment I have is to make the surface area a little bigger. You don't want the subwoofer to fall off the riser during big vibrations.

For a 2-sub setup, is it necessary that the height of the RISERs of the 2 subs are equal to obtain the maximum benefit? Thanks again.

The best and easiest option for setting them up is to use identical subwoofers on identical risers. When subwoofers or risers are not identical, you may have to spend more time tweaking them and their placement to get even and smooth bass across the room.

The recommendation according to your sticky (Guide to Subwoofers, Part II) is for identical subs in a multi-sub setup. But couldn't a different sub offer advantages, such as making up for the weaknesses of the first sub? If you duplicate subwoofers identically, the weaknesses of one will still be weaknesses with two of them. I understand that from an evenness standpoint, identical subs are the most predictable...because different models will interact with the room differently. But couldn't performance be enhanced with...i dunno, four subs that are 18" (for lowest freqs), 12" and 12" (for the "typical" bass freqs and two of them for evenness), and 8" for the accuracy and punch in "higher" bass freqs? These are random picks, but still. BD, As an owner of differing sub models in the same listening room, what are your impressions? Would you recommend identical subs or properly calibrated differing subs for a multisub setup if you had to choose? |
