One year is enough to shake out the bugs, I don't like paying for warranties. I suggest getting the UHD 4K TV first, and checking out 4K Streaming Content. If you have a good ISP with a Solid connection and Ethernet....You might find that you don't need that 4K Player!

Player>>>streaming, I only get movies on iTunes if it doesn’t have a 4K disc. Apple TV 4K using Ethernet does look very good but still not up to par with physical. Especially for audio.

Blasphemy! Discs are still the best bet for AV quality unless you have quite a bit of disposable income for a Kaleidascape ecosystem where the video might be a little better depending on the video encode, but there's no Dolby Vision and the audio is usually the same as a Blu-ray disc.

i just ordered an 820 and i am looking for advice on using the HDR optimizer with my TV.

i have a LGC1 (my G3 arrives next week) and when watching HDR films via disc I don't use the static tone mapping on the the C1. From what I've read, with this player -- I want to turn let the player drive tone mapping and let the tv process it. What I'm unsure of is if I need to turn on the LGC1 tone mapping when watching a disc for this to work-- or if i can continue to leave it off. Also, is there harm to leaving them both on?

Apologies in advance if I'm not understanding correctly.

I do my gaming on a Wii, 480 P.

Looking to upgrade. Using exclusively with my projector will never need Dolby vision. Is there any advantage to the 820 over the 420 at half the price? HDR optimizer is primary importance.

There is no way to turn "On" or "Off" tone mapping on the LG C1. The TV will tone map no matter what. The difference is that there are 2 ways the TV will tone map.

1.) It will just statically tone map automatically where it will just looking at the mastering display of each disc and tone map it down properly (which is what a lot of people do) along with using the Panny 820 HDR Optimizer.

2.) Turning on Dynamic Tone Mapping option on the LG C1 (which acts similar yet not as accurate to what Dolby Vision would be)

I have an LG C9 as well as a Panny 820 and the way I have it setup is rather uniquely but from what I can tell, it is the best option for HDR10 discs.

On my C9, I have LG's Dynamic Tone Mapping turned "On." I also have my Panny 820's HDR Optimizer "On" and set to "Super High Luminance." Now, plenty of people say LG's Dynamic Tone Mapping overdoes the brightness of the picture. And they are right. However, if you go into the HDR Options Menu, you can turn down the Dynamic Range Adjustment Slider to about -5 or -6 and that will correct the overbrightening issues LG's DTM does to the picture.

These settings allow for a dynamically changing picture but in a way that it is not crazily inaccurate. I prefer these because I don't like how LG normally tone maps movies. It's too dim and dark compared to other major TV brands like Sony and Panasonic.

As an FYI, you can use a 4k Blu-ray player to play UHD discs on a 1080p screen. The 820 does a decent job downscaling and translating HDR to SDR if you do end up getting the player before a 4k TV.

Thank to vouchers only paid just under £300.

Have set it up and it went through the initial set up, Only watched one disc but it works perfectly so far. Will be selling on my current UB820.
That's a great price. The player is gleaming from my end. I purchased mine nearly five years ago. The original release, warranty will end this year I believe. Such a beautiful player and built just fine.

You will notice how quiet the drive is. Enjoy.

This is pissing me the hell off. This disc is just stuck in the player.
This is exactly what happened to me with The Magnificent Seven. I finally got it out by unplugging it, shaking the machine and when I plugged it back in and pressed eject it released the disc.
Problem I’m occasionally having now is where I place a movie in and it says it can’t read the disc. I’m having to take the disc out, wipe it and go again. That occurred with City of the Living Dead, Subspecies II and Dragonslayer.

No, it doesn’t. Not good enough. You’re much better off watching the regular Blu-ray.

The only good HDR to SDR conversion is found in Lumagen Radiance Pro and MadVR scalers. They start at around $5000 or so.

The 420 and 820 use the exact same optical drive, for better or worse.

The HDR optimizer is on the 420 as well.

I believe the only difference is the 820 supports DolbyVision while the 420 doesn't. Considering the price difference, I'm sure there has to be more than that. I *think* the 820 also has analog audio while the 420 doesn't.

Nothing too drastic. I went with the 820 because I hope to get a DV TV but I'm perfectly happy with HDR10 to be honest.

I've already noticed. Definitely quieter than my previous 820. Managed to sell the 820 yesterday for £210 cash locally so the upgrade has effectively cost me less than £100.

Brilliant bargain , just make sure the firmware is up to date. Always make sure the disc is free of scratches and fingerprints as the lens can be more sensitive but overall usually a flawless player when reading discs.
