Well, here's a throwback, and not a thread I expected to see revived.

I'll join in on the love for season 1. I watched the show pretty religiously back in the day. It aired in my early teen years, when I didn't really know what was good or not- I just loved seeing superheroes on TV. Even as viewership dwindled, I never lost interest. A few characters/arcs I didn't really care for, but it always kept my interest. Between that and Lost, man, it was some good weekly viewing back then. I haven't rewatched it since then, but I've been meaning to go back and check out at least the first season, as that's pretty universally beloved. The rest of the seasons, I don't know- I'm not sure if I want to tarnish the good memories I have. I remember being bummed that it was canceled, and even more bummed when they talked about stuff they wanted to do before the writer's strike.

I wonder how it would fare if it would have aired nowadays, in the MCU era that we have going on. I think the closest thing like it, at least that I'm aware of, is The Boys, and I feel like that plays up the powers and violence/over-the-top nature of things, whereas Heroes, at least in its first season, seemed to be pretty grounded (as much as you can for a show about superheroes) and took itself seriously. I feel like if it aired today, many audiences might find it too slow. I never did check out Heroes Reborn, but it didn't fare too well.

There's a certain cadre of fans who insist that even s1 started to decline after a certain writer left the series to start his own show running career.

I'm not as hard core on that as I think s1 ended on a good note but I must admit that the writer in question did write the absolute best episode in the entire series (Company Man) and it isn't even close.

I agree. We really dug this show but it fell apart fast after the first season.

Unpopular opinion: Seasons 2-4 are watchable and entertaining. None of them are as well written as Season 1, but they’re perfectly serviceable.

Definitely watchable but pales in comparison to the first season.

No argument there. I just think they get too bad a rap, when they actually have some solid characters/plot lines.
