Insiders, I hate to post "rumors", but should we be preparing for some more bad news????????

I will be posting some of these over the next couple of days - hopefully that will give Bill something to talk about on Monday!

I can't post the BIG one just yet - stay tuned over the weekend - some fellow AVS-ers who were with me today KNOW what I am talking about (giggle) - I suppose someone else may post it first, but I don't want to blurt it out yet

However - I CAN post one little tidbit - The Denon player will NOT ship this year - despite Talkstr8t's (mis?)information to the contrary. In conversations today they stated it will be out next year. I've got an inside line on the issues, but can't get too detailed. Suffice it to say for now: "I would suspect that the task of developing that BD player platform significantly exceeded Denon's expectations - and budget - and I believe that they are currently re-evaluating their options on how best to bring the future hi def player(s) to market."

I hope that my wording is not misunderstood.

I will have much more info on the BIG stuff shortly - and I don't mean BIG in a bb77 kind of way - this is REALLY big...

Another question to the Insiders.... not sure if this was brought up yet.

With the recent Paramount "bonus check", whats the chances of all studios screaming "Me Too!!!!"?
Is it possible this war might go to the "highest bidder"?????

Close, but not quite correct.

A DTS-HD HR track contains the core DTS Substream plus various of the XBR, X96K and XXCH Extension Substreams (all CBR).

A DTS-HD MA track contains the core DTS Substream plus the XLL Extension Substream (VBR).

As you noted, though, DTS specs *two* reference decoder designs for DTS-HD, DTS-HD HR and DTS-HD MA, both of which can sit on the same silicon, but the presence of which are required for requisite decoding.

If you play a DTS-HD MA track on a player that only sports a DTS-HD HR decoder, you will only be decoding the core DTS track; likewise, if you play a DTS-HD HR track on a player that only sports a DTS-HD MA decoder, you will only be decoding the core DTS track, but you will have probably the weirdest player on the block, as a company would be insane to build silicon that supports DTS-HD MA decoding but not DTS-HD HR decoding.

Long story short: DTS-HD MA is not "built" on top of DTS-HD HR...it's an entirely different beast. Keith can back me up on this--we discussed it, um, elsewhere.

Hi, as you seem to have a good understanding of how DTS-HD works, are you able to answer the question I asked earlier in the thread, which was if a player states support for "DTS-HD", such as this one, can we assume that it supports both DTS-HD HR and DTS-HD MA?

The big news was that 51GB HD DVD discs have been approved.

Since we're on the topic ... I'd like to see a beautifully restored Fantasia on BD, with deep colour support (when it's available).

And maybe a remix of the audio for surround sound.

So, six more months before they are in the market or viable...

Doesn't concern me in the least. Especially since it won't be backwards compatible with current players. Sounds like it will be used more for data than HDM at this point. The combo seems to be more aimed at HDM and not set for approval until near the end of the year.

Can we get some insider input on this development? I'd like to know the status of the 200gb Blu-ray, as well as does this mean that HDDVDs will now have two 'stall' points on some discs in the future because of poor seamless branching? Is a triple layer Blu-ray ready so it's future proof potential can be shown in the short term?

This will be a headline grabber for HDDVD.

Interesting... thanks for the clarification.

I was not under the impression that the XLL (Lossless) extension was mutually exclusive from the XXCH (>6.1 channels), XBR (Higher CBR), or other extensions (XSA, X96k-- I presume for higher sampling frequency above 48kHz) in DTS-HD. I thought they could encode DTS-HD with any of these extensions to allow for maximum backward compatibility and such. I'll have to go back to that white paper again.

Which begs the question-- is anyone encoding soundtracks in DTS-HD HR then? Grr-- as if the format war wasn't frustrating enough.

Cheers!

Unless they also changed the max bandwidth, that is a non-news. The reason why they can't fit lossless audio in with the movie is not disc space, it's bandwidth. All this means is that they can put more non-simultaneous extras on the disc (remember, PiP also consumed bandwidth), which can easily go to a second disc if necessary today.

Insiders, do any of you know if HD DVD's max bandwidth limit was amended?

enjoy

Amillians posted elsewhere here that, as expected, G1 players won't be able to handle the TL discs, so they had better not put movies on them or the fur will fly.

Now that HD DVD ratified a 51Gb disk, we're finally going to stop hearing about that 30Gb is enough, 50GB is too much. This will quickly change to 50GB is not enough, you need the extra 1GB.

God, I'm glad that nonsense is going away.

It would be reasonable for manufacturers to expect consumers to provide their own wireless internet HBAs that plug in a USB port. That way, not all consumers pay for wireless and consumers can ride the downward price curve on wireless adapters.

Insiders, any truth to this? It just popped up on a gaming website. I couldn't find any official news sources about it. Doesn't it fly in the face of the fact that the large Chinese studio went blu exclusive. Does this make sense?

Quote:
Breaking news: a new unexpected development coming out of China is shedding light on the reason that might have prompted Paramount and Dreamworks to jump ship and abort its support for Blu-ray. On September 7th, 2007, China officially dropped the bomb on the HD format war:

A consortium of Chinese university engineers and globally recognized manufacturers, in cooperation with the China High Definition DVD Industry Association (CHDA) and backed by the Chinese government, have reached an agreement on a standard specification for a blue-laser, hi-def disc, (note: not Blu-ray,) which is based on and fundamentally compatible with HD DVD with only minor adjustments, which will utilize the Advanced Audio Video Encoding Standard in Information Technology (AVS) codec developed by the Chinese government.

The newly standardized Chinese HD format is called "CH DVD", and is compatible with HD DVD. As China begins to roll out and adopt its own new "CH-DVD" players for the home market, China can also produce HD-DVD players for the rest of the world, at prices that can best be described as, "Chinese." For the embattled HD DVD, this dramatic turn of event has cemented its place and secured its future in China.

Yeah, it's true and it's been known for a while. Several HD-DVD fanboys have brought it up in the past as proof that China was going to make those $199 players for Wal-Mart. The article is incorrect however as CH-DVD is not compatible with HD-DVD they are similar though and that's what is fueling the argument that they'll remanufacture CH-DVD players into HD-DVD players for international sale.

So this is supposed to get the other Studios to get behind HD DVD? A format that will soon become the most pirated form of media....and with lead?

As for interview with Toshiba's engineers last month in Japanesase audio visual site, they respond "We want to readable first and second layer for existing player/drives."

This is very old news, I knew this a few years back - I was told China didn't want to pay royalties for the new HD formats.

Source was a manufacturer from china.
