A DTS-HD HR track contains the core DTS Substream plus various of the XBR, X96K and XXCH Extension Substreams (all CBR). A DTS-HD MA track contains the core DTS Substream plus the XLL Extension Substream (VBR). As you noted, though, DTS specs *two* reference decoder designs for DTS-HD, DTS-HD HR and DTS-HD MA, both of which can sit on the same silicon, but the presence of which are required for requisite decoding. If you play a DTS-HD MA track on a player that only sports a DTS-HD HR decoder, you will only be decoding the core DTS track; likewise, if you play a DTS-HD HR track on a player that only sports a DTS-HD MA decoder, you will only be decoding the core DTS track, but you will have probably the weirdest player on the block, as a company would be insane to build silicon that supports DTS-HD MA decoding but not DTS-HD HR decoding. Long story short: DTS-HD MA is not "built" on top of DTS-HD HR...it's an entirely different beast. Keith can back me up on this--we discussed it, um, elsewhere. ![]() |

So, six more months before they are in the market or viable... Doesn't concern me in the least. Especially since it won't be backwards compatible with current players. Sounds like it will be used more for data than HDM at this point. The combo seems to be more aimed at HDM and not set for approval until near the end of the year. Can we get some insider input on this development? I'd like to know the status of the 200gb Blu-ray, as well as does this mean that HDDVDs will now have two 'stall' points on some discs in the future because of poor seamless branching? Is a triple layer Blu-ray ready so it's future proof potential can be shown in the short term? This will be a headline grabber for HDDVD. |

I was not under the impression that the XLL (Lossless) extension was mutually exclusive from the XXCH (>6.1 channels), XBR (Higher CBR), or other extensions (XSA, X96k-- I presume for higher sampling frequency above 48kHz) in DTS-HD. I thought they could encode DTS-HD with any of these extensions to allow for maximum backward compatibility and such. I'll have to go back to that white paper again. Which begs the question-- is anyone encoding soundtracks in DTS-HD HR then? Grr-- as if the format war wasn't frustrating enough. Cheers! |

Now that HD DVD ratified a 51Gb disk, we're finally going to stop hearing about that 30Gb is enough, 50GB is too much. This will quickly change to 50GB is not enough, you need the extra 1GB.
God, I'm glad that nonsense is going away. |

Insiders, any truth to this? It just popped up on a gaming website. I couldn't find any official news sources about it. Doesn't it fly in the face of the fact that the large Chinese studio went blu exclusive. Does this make sense?

Yeah, it's true and it's been known for a while. Several HD-DVD fanboys have brought it up in the past as proof that China was going to make those $199 players for Wal-Mart. The article is incorrect however as CH-DVD is not compatible with HD-DVD they are similar though and that's what is fueling the argument that they'll remanufacture CH-DVD players into HD-DVD players for international sale.

So this is supposed to get the other Studios to get behind HD DVD? A format that will soon become the most pirated form of media....and with lead?

As for interview with Toshiba's engineers last month in Japanesase audio visual site, they respond "We want to readable first and second layer for existing player/drives."
