Is that what will happen though? The only actual example I see of this in modern filmmaking is David Lowery. Not that I particularly like his films, but it's clear he balances the money-makers with his passion projects.

Other than him though, Disney crap just seems like a graveyard for under-ambitious directors. I'm sure they get a big payday but it doesn't seem to do anything for their careers.

The Russos have become two of the most influential producers in the industry after their MCU films. Granted most of their projects are crap, but that's besides the point.

Guy Ritchie made four personal projects, with another two on the way, since Aladdin. Prior to that he was stuck making bombs for WB, like King Arthur and Man from U.N.C.L.E.

Kenneth Branagh is a pretty respected director and even he balances out passion projects like Belfast and All Is True with paycheck movies for Disney such as Artemis Fowl.

Taika Waititi gets to make stuff like Jojo Rabbit and Next Goal Wins in between his MCU projects and Disney even helps distribute them. Why do you think Jojo Rabbit had so much success both at the box office and in terms of awards compared to Taika's earlier movies? Cause it had that Disney/Searchlight marketing behind it.

Let's not even bring up Jon Favreau. Sure, he's not exactly making indie films right now (although he did do Chef), but that's probably because he's more into big budget filmmaking. His career wouldn't have survived Cowboys & Aliens if it wasn't for Disney, and now he's working on Star Wars.

So I'd like to think that playing ball for Disney helps a filmmaker's career, certainly more than it harms it.

Is the goal to make a legitimately good movie or to try and boost Sarah Polleys career? If she’s struggling to make it as a film maker then maybe she needs to work harder on her end of it. Just a thought.

I wonder what "modern audience" required changes will be made to this?

A lot of big directors worked through the studio system earlier in their career. Surely you're aware of Cameron being hired to make Piranha II or Nolan to direct an English remake of Insomnia.

Hollywood is a vicious machine and oftentimes it doesn't matter how hard you work, if you don't pick the right projects and get the needed exposure.
Playing a bit of a Yes Man for the big studios before you make a name for yourself can definitely help your chances.
The reason why Disney is the go to these days for such a shot is because of their popular properties and massive marketing reach. Like, you'd have to do a disastrous job for a Bambi or Lion King movie to not print money basically. Not to mention a lot of these directors grew up with these animated classics, so they feel attached to the property in some way.

The Little Mermaid is a excellent film and people who bother to see it agree. It has a 94% score on RT among verified viewers. Cinemascore gives it an A and they again used people who see it. Unfortunately this is about the lead being black instead of white. She was perfect as Arielle.
