Hi, does this release have any of the bonus features that the Kino release had.

Can anyone check whether the sound is coming out of the right speakers in this edition?

I imported a copy to the US and don't have it yet, but the impressions in the Italian thread are so far positive. If you have a Panasonic UHD player, sounds like this is a much better option as it doesn't have the Dolby Vision "strobing" the Kino release has. That forced me to turn off DV and use the HDR layer instead. Also the sound channels are apparently fine, and not mixed up.

Impressions from the Italian thread:

Not much to compare it too as I'v not watched the film since the 90's but the UHD looked very impressive indeed to me, the showdown at the end especially looks wonderful.

Overall actually a much better film than I remember, perhaps Woo's best US film? Van Dam isnt asked to do much acting with Henrickson carrying things and it looks great. Almost the opposite of Under Seige to me which I found quite underwhelming going back to, really only Busey and Tommy Lee keep it interesting(wekk the cake as well).

New German edition from Plaion incoming in March: https://shop.plaionpictures.com/hart...ays-exkl.-shop

In the live stream they said based on a new OCN scan provided by Universal and worked on by LSP. If I got that right, something newer than used on the current 4K releases - they were rather confident that it will best the existing releases at any rate (and I didn't smell bs, but I have doubts re. new scan, but I think that's what they actually said). It will include the workprint as an extra based on a VHS provided by John Woo.

This will be the third UHD I'm buying of this film, unbelievable. I was in the live stream and laughed when they showed the trailer. Too little, too late I thought - and such a big box for lots of nonsense. But no, this really seems definitive in a convincing way and the extensive participation of John Woo is extra special. It looks like Plaion licensed Kino's extras with Woo and Lance Henriksen but went the extra mile re. all the cuts. Why couldn't Kino do the same thing? They were in contact with Woo but likely didn't bother about anything but his master approval in order to release their UHD as soon as possible. Really disappointing but that's exactly who they are.

At movieside we are also currently debating on whether they actually said new scan from OCN as in newer than used with the existing 4Ks. I also say yes, that's what they said (if that's true is another story). And that LSP is working on this new scan. I still have doubts re. new scan though.

Question being, if you also saw the stream: What do you think they said?

"It's not the version of the movie, that people may know from the US UHD or the english version. It's a new scan, a new restauration, which we had done here in Germany by LSP, so I believe we can beat the foreign UHD releases."

And later one: "It's a completly new scan of the OCN from Universal, that they (Universal) provided to us and that was extensively restored here.

Make of that what you will. I still think the most likely option is, that this is the 4K-Master of the US and UK-Version with some work work done by LSP. Whatever that "Restoration" work.

You can rewatch the live stream here:

Thx, and I will actually rewatch tomorrow, but I guess I really heard that right then. Whether it's true remains to be seen. New scan will seem somewhat unnecessary to me.

I just editied my post above and added another quote to my post, that was said later and cleared it up a bit more (for me) at least. As I've mentioned above: This is propably the US/UK-Master with additional work done by LSP.

I heard exactly what you're translating and they said new scan. I also have doubts and would also think restoration on the same scan at best, but I still think that's not what they said and you confirmed what I heard. I will be paying attention to this release. I also don't doubt it being the best one, but how much better remains to be seen.

I think the second quote makes it a little be misleading. The "it's a completly new scan...", propably was in releation to previous releases in Germany and not the other US/UK UHDs. Will find out in March for sure, but why would Universal themselves release a UHD in UK and than create a new 4K-Master and provide that to Plaion. I just can't see that happening.

Ain't no way the OCN got pulled out again after just scanning it, this is just word hype salad. Maybe it will look better than Kino, not hard to do being real, but come on. If they minimize all those white specs in the Kino it will already be better. I'm not rebuying this after already going through a replacement program but looks cool. A VHS digitization of a workprint is not a selling point for me.

Did anyone notice an audio glitch on the Universal 4K UHD? At 11m46sec during the fight outside the diner Van Damme hits a guy in the head with a glass bottle. On the English track (DTS-HD 5.1) the sound mutes for a second. The sound effect of the bottle breaking is there on the Italian track (DTS 2.0).
