CH-DVD will be perfect for China. HD-DVD doesn't have as much studio support, but they don't allow half the movies in China anyways.

paidgeek,

I posted something in another thread and brought it up here - sure it's been discussed before, but perhaps not. I think it's obvious Sony sees the PS3 as a key to the success of BD - outside of the buy a PS3 (or BD player) and receive free movies, is there anything planned to reach out to gamers to start buying BD movies instead of DVDs?

If all PS3 owner woke up today and bought just one movie, the numbers would likely be monstrous.

Maybe include a coupon for 1/2 off any BD movie (or a free selected movie) or something with particular PS3 games?

I know the guys who are still in SD may not pick up as many (I had 21 before I got an HDTV today), but those on the fence would maybe start picking them up.

To any knowledgeable Insider: I was at my local Best Buy tonight and saw POTC played from a Sony BDP-S300 and displayed on one of the new 120MHz HDTVs. And the video display was absolutely stunning. I don't know if it was because of the mood I was in tonight or whether it was because of the way that HDTV was "tuned" but it looked as good as my 1080P 50" Pioneer Elite Monitor. Can it be that 120MHz can have that much impact?

As far as the Chinese video standard goes, do not read anything into it.

Might I mention the LAST 3 China-exclusive formats, 2 of which never materialzied, and the 3rd one (SVCD) choked a few times and then died.

The Chinese only bootleg the best

Yes, but since they'll all have Blu players it'll be immaterial eh?

Says much about HD-DVD, it takes 3 layers to do what BD does in 2 layers and best yet only offers a massive 1GB increase :O

Holy crap batman!

Clearly HD-DVD is more technically advanced

But still NO discussion of the costs of manufacturing the triple layer discs.

Default Re-work of Talladega Nights?

paidgeek,

Not sure this will be a popular request as it isn't the most loved film ever... but...

The picture quality on the Talladega Nights Blu-ray has been pretty universally criticized - on highdefdigest it received a worse PQ score than the original Fifth Element disc.

Is there any possibility of a future re-issue of this with an improvement in picture quality? Do you know if it is more of an issue with the original source material?

My experience has been that it has poor contrast (as per highdefdigest as well) but also that it is generally "soft". I found most scenes to not be crisp and detailed.

Doesn't concern me in the least. Especially since it won't be backwards compatible with current players. Sounds like it will be used more for data than HDM at this point.
To my knowledge the approval was for ROM format only, not -R/-RW. I don't think this in any way implies there will be burnable support for 51GB (they can barely get 30GB working!).

Talkstr8t, since the word going around is that Sony is testing profile 1.1/2.0 compatibility later this month do you have any inside info on any titles announced for later on this year being updated to include support for these features?

I'm 99.44% certain here...

I honestly don't know *what* DTS was thinking with the branding logic, but from a marketing perspective, DTS-HD is functionally equivalent to DTS-HD HR. If a device can decode DTS-HD MA, it should have a DTS-HD MA logo on it. Technically, DTS-HD is the umbrella, so saying a player can "decode" DTS-HD means zip...but everyone seems to say DTS-HD when they mean DTS-HD HR, so voila, we have the fuster cluck we have now.

Lionsgate has a few DTS-HD titles, i.e. Stargate and Total Recall.

While I agree that DTS' marketing of DTS-HD and DTS-HD Master Audio are a little confusing, it's actually not when you take it for what it is. If the packaging says DTS-HD, that only means DTS-HD and not DTS-HD Master Audio. If it says DTS-HD Master Audio as some of the new Onkyo recievers do, then it does full blown lossless DTS-HD Master Audio. It is better to state DTS-HD High Resolution to dilineate it from Master Audio, but DTS-HD and DTS-HD HR are the very same thing.

We don't know that for certain yet, but either way, I doubt it will make much of a difference.

Insiders: I had been hearing some rumblings concerning Intel a while ago, but they died down. Have you guys heard anything?

More information will be forthcoming. We've still got folks away for CEDIA, post IFA and it's a weekend, so some decisions take a bit more time to be finalized.

Question

Dear Paidgeek,

will the upcoming UK edition of Underworld Evolution (Due for release on 09/24/2007) be the same transfer as the US release (Mpeg2) or is it a new encode (preferably AVC)?

I have just watched the Legends of the Fall trailer on the Patriot BD - please tell me that the "PQ" of this trailer is in no way representative of the final release! This movie happens to be one of my wife's absolute favourites (guilty pleasure and my very first DVD purchase) - is the quality of the transfer (as it is now - even the UK Superbit was not exactly striking...) the reason why this particular release get's postponed and postponed and...

A little bird (Moretonbay) told me "The DaVinci Code" BD get's released 12-31-07 -> can you confirm this?

Thank you!

if used correctly then yes. DTS-HD means that the decoder can decode the whole familly of DTS-HD which includes MA and HR

Thankfully all the new players announced that will pass bitstream will pass through DTS-HD Master Audio and TrueHD, the whole shebang.

I was not under the impression that the XLL (Lossless) extension was mutually exclusive from the XXCH (>6.1 channels), XBR (Higher CBR), or other extensions (XSA, X96k-- I presume for higher sampling frequency above 48kHz) in DTS-HD. I thought they could encode DTS-HD with any of these extensions to allow for maximum backward compatibility and such. I'll have to go back to that white paper again.
what you need to realize is that if it worked that way you would have a lot of overhead for nothing and so you laden the encoding uselessly. You would need a way to pass to the decoder that p1 is DTS, P2 is DTS-ES, P3 is DTS-HR and part 4 is DTS-MA (assuming it has MA had 4 sub).

In theory anyone that cares will get a better player that supports all three

Which begs the question-- is anyone encoding soundtracks in DTS-HD HR then? Grr-- as if the format war wasn't frustrating enough.
LG has a few
