I'm currently rewatching the original Battlestar Galactica. This is my first time watching it since 1978-1979. I can't believe

[Show spoiler]they killed of Serina (Jane Seymour) so quickly.

That was a major bummer.

And no, I won't be watching Galactica 1980 (never have, and I don't wanna) or the reboot (watched the mini-series, and the characters annoyed me).

The new AMC series. I enjoyed it and don't remember the movie, nor have I read the book. So the story felt all new to me.

When Samantha gives birth to a baby girl, she and Darrin (Dick York) wonder what to name her. Endora suggests "Tabatha" (the spelling later changed to "Tabitha"), but they want a chance to make a choice for themselves. Darrin and Endora's temporary truce in their shared joy over the occasion is short-lived after she takes her out of the nursery behind the nurse's (Eve Arden) back and reverts back to her usual tricks.

Bewitched: And Something Makes Four (10/18/1969)

[Show spoiler]Darrin (now played by Dick Sargent) and Samantha welcome a son named Adam, and Maurice casts a spell on him that makes everyone like him the best out of all the babies in the hospital. When Larry falls under this spell, he wants to make him "the biggest child star since Shirley Temple," but Samantha doesn't want to board her newborn son on the good ship lollipop, so she must get Endora to help convince Maurice to lift the spell.

The Bette Midler Show (6/19/1976)

[Show spoiler]This 84-minute concert videotaped for HBO in Cleveland over two nights captures the Divine Miss M at her raciest and most energetic. Unlike a lot of network TV music specials of the era, the jokes here actually land because they have not been subject to the whims of sponsors and Standards & Practices people. While later generations may know her because of her Disney film work (making a joke here about "my deep-frozen friend Walt Disney" leading into a performance of "Someday My Prince Will Come" a self-fulfilling prophecy, as it was Touchstone who proved to be the oasis to the post-Jinxed dry spell her film career faced) it was live shows like these that first made her a star even before 20th Century-Fox cast her in The Rose.

I don't know about the original cablecast, but by the time Embassy Home Entertainment brought it to videotape and laserdisc in the 1980s, they presented it in full stereo. Sometimes, it's a little too full to actually hear the vocals against the band backing her and her backup singers, the Harlettes, on songs that range from "In the Mood" to "Delta Dawn" to "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" to "Hello In There." Unfortunately, some of the numbers from that show seemed to have hit the electronic equivalent of the cutting room floor.

The Simpsons: "Krusty Gets Kancelled" (5/13/1993)

[Show spoiler]The battle for daytime television viewership in Springfield heats up as Krusty the Klown faces a new competitor: a loudmouthed mischief-making ventriloquist dummy named Gabbo. When Krusty's show takes a hit in the ratings, even losing ground to Spanish-language TV, he tries a series of desperate measures that only hasten the show's eventual cancellation. The writing was on the wall when the producers of Itchy and Scratchy cartoons take them to Gabbo and Krusty is forced to make do with their closest Soviet Bloc equivalent.

With his TV show gone, Gabbo kicks him while he's down with a prank phone call. When Bart's attempt to sabotage the obnoxious upstart's meteoric rise to fame by exposing his contempt for the viewers when he thinks the cameras are off doesn't work, a broke, bloated Krusty turns to Bart and Lisa to coordinate a comeback special with his friends in the entertainment industry. Bette Midler, Johnny Carson, Luke Perry, Hugh Hefner, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers say yes, but Elizabeth Taylor says no thanks. Or more accurately, her agent preemptively tells Bart and Lisa to go away while she was polishing her two Oscars. Once she sees what the special actually looks like, she regrets it, saying "I've got to fire that agent." Krusty opens the special with a rewritten version of Stephen Sondheim's "Send in the Clowns" from A Little Night Music. Taylor was in the 1977 film based on it. Then-husband Larry Fortensky was not consulted in the matter. In real life, the agent who got Liz this also got her the role of Wilma Flintstone's mother and a truly terrible TV movie called These Old Broads that allowed her and other Hollywood legends to settle long-held scores over Eddie Fisher, the 1961 Oscar ceremony, and the casting of Cleopatra. Her appearance here is a full circle moment for how that epic changed the future of Hollywood and the studio that made it, the same studio that still produces this show.
