One would think that a dedicated device, designed just for streaming, would yield better performance without all the overhead that a multipurpose cell phone has. Plus, it's annoying to be gaming on your phone and deal with constant notifications like texts, emails, software updates, etc. That's why I stopped listening to music on my phone and bought a dedicated music player. I got tired of the constant interruptions.

I'm sure that is the focus here, improving the user experience for those who get frustrated by some of the compromises using multitask/smart devices.

With the limited info available, I think the Wii U comparison would be my most likely use case. For away from home use, if Sony wants me to pack Project Q vs Switch or Steam Deck, both of which can be used in flight or basically anywhere as long as your battery is alive, it is going to take some convincing or a game I want to play that is better on/exclusive to PS5. Although Sony would probably make an excellent device for cloud streaming GFN and Project xCloud, as well as Android games, can't say I'm interested if this turns out to be Sony's slightly better take on the Logitech G Cloud.

[Show spoiler]Not happening, but if Sony announced that we can also play digitally-purchased legacy games directly on the device (no streaming, no PS5 required), that would make it more compelling. Still a dedicated PlayStation device, just not tied to a network.
PS/PSP/PSV all work really well on Arm processors, PS2/PS3 is getting better but I doubt even in this imaginary scenario that Sony would include support for those two, but it would be cooler if they did.
The audience for this backward compatible/PS Vita 2 fever dream has got to be small, and it would be a lot of work to please a small group, who would probably also be critical over missing features (online features no longer supported or something like that). Inevitably someone will counter that we should just "find a way" to play older games through various means, but it can be a real p.i.t.a.

that is not what he said. To go with something discussed earlier he could be in a cab, have this q connected to his phone's wi-fi and the phone send the signal over cell network to play anywhere(aka use phone as hotspot), but playing anywhere is not what he is interested.

I can see why it will be an interesting options for many out there but at this point I am not that interested in it. When I was a kid in high school, not having to fight with my sisters for TV time, being able to play in the bus... something like this would have been awesome. But I am now in my 50's and if I want to play I just sit down in front of my big screen and play.

I wish Sony just put the resources they're spending on this into a Steam Deck competitor instead. I've said it before, but a proper Vita 2 with dedicated games and ports is just not viable in today's landscape - hell, it arguably wasn't viable with the Vita itself, given how it ultimately didn't see much support outside of indie and Japanese devs. But we've seen the PC-based handheld market explode in the wake of the Steam Deck, and Sony & PlayStation have the brand recognition and resources to make some serious waves there.

Feels a bit redundant to me for Sony to put out a Steam Deck competitor when they are already porting games to PC where they will be able to run on a Steam Deck.

So it’s what I can already do with my phone and controller in Bluetooth mode. Like everyone else, I’m not gonna shell out any cash for this thing.

. . . .but I did for my Rokid Max. OLED, 1080p 120hrz AR Glasses, up to 215” screen size, and hooks up to almost everything

The more I think about it, the more I think this thing is just an experimental device. It really feels like Sony is dipping their toes in the possibility of some sort of eventual hybrid console years down the road.

I'd say the Wii U comparison is apt here considering that console was Nintendo's early attempt at hybrid gaming, failing because the tech wasn't quite there yet for a true hybrid. Even though it failed, it did get them moving in the right direction with the Switch.

That is better than I get from Steam Deck and about the same as my Switch OLED, might put the battery around 5,000 mAh. Now that I think about it I don't think charging has been mentioned yet, hopefully Sony keeps it simple and uses USB-C for the interface, and it is USB PD compliant.

AR glasses are pretty nice, picked up the Viture One for watching 3D movies.

Never tried any of these glasses, but I always imagine them looking slightly transparent

I remember the early ps4 commercials were pushing the Ps4/Vita remote play but it didn’t catch on. maybe it was too soon, but even a decade later, cloud streaming isn’t mainstream

we can go even further in the past when they added remote play to the psp (it was very limited obviously) but completing the games ‘on the go’ or any form of “hybrid” was an inevitably. Ps3 and ps4 had a good cross play/save/buy system with the vita that they unfortunately didn’t stick with (as always). also the vita tv was basically a hybrid console when paired with the vita… thinking about this, I miss the old Sony

anyway, and now that the hybrid concept is popular thanks to the switch, Sony should give it a go

if it is 4-6h that is not that bad. worst comes to worst I am assuming you can play while it is charging.

Love that this starts with them playing Deep Down, that game looked like it had real potential. Too bad it is effectively vaporware.

They should have let the PSP/Vita owners play their games on the PS3/PS4. Reverse remote-play. This is what PSP/Vita owners wanted but Sony didn't care. Gave us the PS Vita TV instead which died quickly. I have zero interest in this new device.

One of the docs uncovered during the FTC vs MSFT injunction trial shows Microsoft estimating Project Q (identified as “handheld version of PlayStation 5) will be under $300. That is probably $299.99 but it could be less…or it could be more expensive! I would consider this a competitor’s analysis, no official price or pricing target announced yet.

I'd be shocked if this is not $300, maybe $250 minimum

The best I'd do is $125 maybe $150 and that's mainly for the controller feature. You can't even download games to it. It's a streaming device.

Cloud gaming handhelds are certainly a weird market. Basically every mobile phone and tablet ($50 ~ $2,000) followed dedicated models like G Cloud or Razer Edge ($300 - $600). I wonder what sales for the dedicated cloud gaming units look like, or what they need to be for the companies to feel like it was a success?

Anyway, if Project Q is exclusively a PS5 streaming receiver, basically a PS5 accessory, that narrows the market even further. What kind of numbers does Sony need to make it a success, and will they decide that means Project Q should be luxury priced or mass-market?
