Previous PS4 thread: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=316998
Nintendo Switch thread (no longer updating): https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=327587 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Like before, I will be listing which PS5 do and do not require updates to play, as well as titles with DLC and updates on the disc. As always, this info is useful both for offline gamers, as well as those interested in game preservation. I will also be listing PSVR2 games released on disc, and including info on backwards compatibility for un-patched PS4 discs. Please refer to N-Game Arts and Doesitplay? for others who do the same. PS5 - Complete/Nearly Complete on disc ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() * Control - All DLC on disc * Death Stranding Director's Cut - All new content on disc * Demon's Souls - Playable without issues * Disgaea 6 Complete - Deluxe Edition - DLC on disc * Final Fantasy XVI - Fully playable at release without any updates. Minor bugs present which have/will be patched out, nothing gamebreaking. * Ghost of Tsushima Director's Cut - DLC on the disc. * The Nioh Collection - Comes with two PS5 discs, one for each game. All DLC on disc. * A Plague Tale: Innocence - Version 1.09 on the disc. * Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts 2: Elite Edition - Elite content on disc. * Stray - Version 1.002 on the disc. * Terminator: Resistance Enhanced - DLC on disc. The game can be fully completed without major issues, but trophies are broken without a patch. * Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege - Deluxe Edition - While single player content is sparse, it is nonetheless all here. "Situations (A short campaign mode) and Training Grounds (Also known as Terrorist Hunt) are playable offline alongside all operators and maps as of the time of testing (March 2021)" * Warhammer Chaosbane - DLC on the disc. * The Witcher III: Wild Hunt - Complete Edition - All DLC & new content on disc, except one armor set. Version on disc has several bugs, so the PS4 complete edition disc may offer a graphically inferior, but more stable experience. * World War Z: Aftermath - Has episodes 1-7, the Vanguard class, all GOTY content, and the booster special infected on disc. * XIII - Includes major overhaul update on disc. PS5 - Partially complete on disc ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() * Borderlands 3: Ultimate Edition - Only includes base game on the disc, despite being a re-release. DLC is included as download code. * Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition - Patched PS5 edition on disc, but DLC included as a code. * Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade - Yuffie DLC is on a code, not the disc. However, the PS5 disc is still an improvement over the PS4 version, possessing bug fixes and visual upgrades. * Greedfall: Gold Edition - DLC included as download code, not on the disc. * Marvel's Avengers - Unlike the PS4 disc, which cannot be played without a day 1 patch, the PS5 can. It contains a later edition of the game on disc (not sure what exact patch number), though it has had many additional updates since release. * Metro Exodus: Complete Edition - DLC is on a download code, not the disc. * Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate - PS5 version is a single disc, with DLC voucher code. However, the superior PS4 Ultimate release includes two discs, with the DLC pre-installed on disc 2. In short, get the PS4 release, not the PS5. PS4 discs on PS5 - Backwards compatible (with possible minor issues) ![]() * Resident Evil 7: Biohazard - Gold Edition - Plays well on PS5, without patches, barring one exception. Playing one videotape in-game ("Mia") will cause it to crash every time. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- PS5 - Download/Internet required (Avoid) * Aliens: Fireteam Elite - Internet required * Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora - Day 1 patch required * Back 4 Blood - Internet required * Battlefield 2042 - Internet required * Call of Duty (all PS5 titles, as well as all PS4 titles since WWII) - Day 1 Patch required * Diablo IV - Internet required * Godfall - Internet required * Gran Turismo 7 - Internet required * Guilty Gear Strive - Day 1 patch required * Hitman III - Internet required for progression, only some of the missions on the disc. * Hogwarts Legacy - Day 1 patch required * Star Wars Jedi: Survivor - Day 1 patch required * Star Wars Outlaws - Day 1 patch required PS5 - Re-releases with DLC codes (Just recycles the launch disc) * Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree Edition * Resident Evil 4: Gold Edition (UK) * Resident Evil Village: Gold Edition PS4 discs on PS5 - Incompatible without updates (Avoid) * Assassin's Creed: Origins -Details * Assassin's Creed Odyssey - Details * Far Cry 5 - Details * Infamous: Second Son - Details * Just Cause 3 * The Last of Us Part II - Crashes frequently, details here. (Note: Re-released on PS5 in remastered edition) * Prey - Details * Project Cars 3 - Details * Uncharted 4: A Thief's End - Details (Note: Re-released on PS5 within the Legacy of Thieves collection) Last edited by JEDGAR1000; 04-09-2024 at 10:59 PM. |

The Wine has all updates and you may want to check the PS4/5 LRG threads for when I've listed whether something I got had an update.

The Last of Us Part 2, when put into a PS5 console, I can absolutely 100% confirm the disc, without a single update, will NOT work properly and crashes every single time without fail no matter what as soon as Joel starts to exit with Elle from the house on the horseback, which is the introduction scene to the game. The game crashes at that time even after powering/shutting down the PS5 and restarting the game. Tried a few times, even ejecting the disc to check for dust or debris. It was perfectly clean and brand new. The game is a brick in the PS5 console, and only the updates fixed it.
I'll be honest, I have yet to get through that game yet. It's mostly stealth at the moment or walking around for the next cutscene. Not a fan so far compared to the first game. Glad I paid $9.99 for the disc version brand new during the holiday 2022. I'll eventually finish the game possibly. I still can't believe Hogwarts requires a day 1 patch to get past the intro. That's awful. |

? Not interested, but I haven't heard about that before till now. I didn't know people were able to get illegal copies of digital games working on a PS5 at all if that's true. Doesn't sound like it's worth it IMO.
PS5 Console Absolutely requires a day 1 online update to play disc games: I did want to mention that when PS5 is opened new out of the box, I put in the disc of Miles Morales on launch day in November 2020, and was met with some error message that said "In order to play this game, please update your console", which is the first time I ever had a console that could not function out of the box to play video games. I tried again with a different disc, and the same exact thing. PS5 is a brick when bought from the store new, and absolutely requires a software update of many Gigabytes. For anyone with dial up internet, that must be very frustrating. |

Illegal Copies of Games: While it is possible to pirate and play illegal copies of games on various platforms, including consoles like the PS5, doing so is against the law and violates the terms of use of the platform. Sony and other game developers take measures to prevent piracy and protect their intellectual property. Engaging in such activities can lead to legal consequences and negatively impact the gaming industry.
Day 1 Online Update Requirement: It's common for modern gaming consoles to require day one updates to ensure that the system has the latest firmware and security patches. This can also include compatibility updates for newly released games. These updates are meant to improve the user experience, address any bugs or security vulnerabilities, and provide access to online features. While it might be frustrating for those with slower internet connections, these updates are generally necessary for optimal functionality and security. But no matter what you say, online casinos will never go out of style, especially cool when you can first read https://casinosanalyzer.com/online-c...opian-birr-etb information about casinos and then make your choice. Your Experience with PS5 Launch: The scenario you described about not being able to play a disc game on the PS5 until an update is performed is quite common. This is often the case with many modern consoles and devices. Manufacturers release updates to address issues that might not have been resolved by the time the hardware was packaged and shipped. It's always a good practice to check for system updates before trying to play a new game on a console to ensure a smooth experience. Last edited by murdesrapes; 08-22-2023 at 09:08 AM. |

I don’t believe that to be true. I’m not sure how Zivouhr went about it, but there are dedicated YouTube channels out there that test PS5 games offline. I know of at least one where the guy has never connected his ps5 to the internet.

The vast majority of PS5 discs include firmware updates for the console. The PS5 can play most disc games without ever connecting to the internet.
After it's been updated with a game disc the PS5 can also play Blu-ray, 4K Blu-ray, and DVD. The PS4 required a one time online activation to play Blu-ray and DVD (and couldn't play 4K Blu-ray at all). |

Having your console offline just isn't worth it. Missing out on stability patches and performance patches for the titles you own just blows.

I connected and updated PS5 day 1, and thankfully it let me play discs after that so I could test out my PS4 and PS5 games, but they still didn't solve the extreme slowdown interface issue back then till a week or more later. Since the launch PS5 batches of consoles sold, if they've added the latest patches/updates for PS5 before boxing a new console, then that's great. That's how it should've been at launch, as there could be units out there that still require connecting online to play games. |

PS3, PS4, and PS5 firmware updates can also be installed from a USB drive. Since the firmware files are free and DRM-free they will likely remain available from a variety of sources long after Sony stops hosting them on their official website.
Connecting to Sony's servers with your console isn't required and never will be for the PS3, PS4, or PS5. |

I'm sure if you got a PS5 disc that released 2-3 months after the console's initial release, it'd probably have any required update on it. |

But anyway, what would you have done if the PS5 did require a 1 time internet activation to play any games with no workaround? Assume after that you can upgrade firmware via game discs/USB. |

Since anyone can easily provide the firmware updates and they are extremely easy to backup I have no issue with putting firmware updates on a USB drive.

If it was like the Xbox One and Xbox Series X then I wouldn't have bought one. With both of those consoles there are no offline profiles so you have to connect to Microsoft's servers every time you want to create a profile. That means that after Microsoft stops supporting those consoles it will be extremely easy to accidentally turn the system into a brick. If someone deleted their profile or did a system refresh before selling their system then the buyer would be unable to use it. I won't buy or use any console (or Blu-ray/DVD player) that requires ongoing support to function or can easily be put into a state that requires ongoing support. |

Yeah I don't get your objection to the Xbox thing although I remember you talking about it before. On my Series X I can launch the system and install and play games off of a disc (that has a launchable game on it) without internet. I don't need to log in with a password or anything either the dashboard just comes up. Somebody could wipe it, sure. But in the hypothetical future world where there's no way to reactivate anymore they're obviously going to have to disclose that they're selling you a brick and nobody would buy without that disclosure lol.
