Yes, my second player didn't play it either. Really weird.
Not a single scratch on it and the disc looked perfectly fine.
Just wouldn't load at all.

I had this with Mission Impossible Fallout on 4KBD. Disc wouldn't play no matter where I tried it. Xbox kept saying "Invalid disc," LG wouldn't even recognize it. Like it was authored wrong or something.

The weird thing is, it had played before.

Training day should be replace-able.

UHD ! DVD's should not die but if the UHD BD is under $20 they may want to at least give a heads up.

I really have had so few troubles with my discs. I did buy a defective version of Donnie Darko and didn't find out until it was too late to replace it but I rolled the dice and bought it again and got the corrected disc.

I haven't had many problems with hard drives either but they do end up failing quite a bit and I try to replace them after 5 years. When I hear clicking I try to get the files. Hard drives often fail in the first 2 years. I have discs that are 40 years old and play like new.

This is one reason I don't use my Zidoo and NAS drives. Another is recently we got a new ISP and I don't have hard wire run to the router for anything except my Solar inverters. I sort of wish those were set to WIFI but I think I have to take them apart to flip a switch.

I have the 4K of Training Day. It looks fantastic. Threw the DVD out years ago already.

BFI's Ben Stoddart had the following to say on Facebook when asked about the future possibility of DVD only releases of titles without an HD master:
Quote:
Based on the sales of the [Mikio Naruse] DVD set we had available for a long time, it’s not something I can currently prioritise. The DVD market has dropped like a stone - customers increasingly only want Blu-ray (or UHD), which is why we do vastly less dual format releases. People would rather not own something than buy a DVD. Sometimes hard to believe, but I’ve got the sales data to prove it.
Many on this forum still quote the overall home video sales figures which show that DVD is still the most popular medium. But from what I can see, this is mainly due to old people and country folks still buying a lot of DVDs. Ben's statement shows something that many of us already know, which is that the collector's market is primarily a Blu-ray/UHD market.

I wouldn’t say it’s only old people and country folk. I just think the masses, who may still like to own content, don’t really care about quality. DVD is good enough for them and looks watchable even on a 50+ plus 4K tv. They just grab these titles without considering quality.

Us collectors are the minority. We love our HT, the quality of 4K disc, the immersive surround sound, etc.. but yeah, as more of the masses switch to streaming, Blu-ray and UHD will be the main two. But, as we all know now, the Collectors market is shrinking, regardless of format. Digital HD/4K to own was just too late to the party without a reliable locker system due to uncertainties about UV. Streaming subscriptions got there first.

The Streaming bubble popped.

Vanity Fair likes to write up gloom and doom pieces it seems. It was their magazine 2 years ago was claiming that streaming was just mimicking broadcast and the whole industry was tanking. Yeah at that time I posted that article here in this thread for all to read. We survived, some streaming VoD just got larger.

You still end up with so much content online that hasn't been watched by a lot of people it would take years to take it all in. At the same time we seen a return to better times with the commercial cinema profits and the bonus of now seeing more BD releases compared to the covid dark ages. So writers have settled and now it's the actors. It's because yes the internet distributions revenues don't go to them as much as they should. Just like musicians with streaming.

Big reminder to both those groups that there is plenty of content online to take in, and also more physical media to acquire. Also we have a big world and not everyone makes content that is connected to SAG and writers and there are many years of that content to watch in what ever format/platform you utilize. So yeah a bug hardy high ho to those press writers that are just jealous that your physical magazine publications have tanked because of the Internet and you need to speed gloom and doom to other industries to make yourself feel more secure. Too funny.

PS Happy Fourth of July to people in the states.

I love physical media but I was so happy to get rid of VHS tapes.

I haven't had a VHS tape at my home since 1999.

I did used to rent them many years ago. Sometimes new stuff is actually better.
What stinks is when new is actually worse and technology makes a wrong turn.

The Disney+ original movie Crater lasted 48 days before it was removed without warning.

Cost over 53 million to make and lasted 48 days ... ha ha. The film industry is in ruins thanks to the "future" streaming enthusiasts wanted. I'm glad online movies are imploding. I guess that what it will take for people to realize physical media has higher quality anyway. Streaming is not the future - it's the try to get it to it before they take it down.

https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-e...-b2370300.html

An original movie has become unavailable to watch after just one month of release.

[Show spoiler]"In recent months, there has been plenty of concern surrounding the future of certain streaming titles amid the revelation they are being removed unceremoniously. The furore kickstarted when it was revealed that Hemlock Grove, one of Netflix’s original titles, would be taken down. Lilyhammer almost received the same treatment until lead star Steven Van Zandt stepped in.

Then, there was a culling of a variety of scripted dramas from Max, formerly known as HBO Max, after it got acquired by Warner Bros Discovery. But, in what could be one of the most egregious examples yet, a film that was released on Disney+ just 48 days ago will be scrapped from the service.

The Kyle Patrick Alvarez-directed science-fiction adventure, titled Crater, stars McKenna Grace and Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi, and follows friends from a mining colony on the moon in the year 2257. It cost $53.4m and was written by John Griffin, who is behind the successful horror series From, which is available to stream in the UK on NOW."

What’s even more frustrating is the so called ‘movie fans’ who are not prepared to back the cinema and watch everything at home. Short sighted to say the least.
I’m not talking about people that struggle to go for good reasons, I mean the ones who happily gloat that they will wait for the digital release. They are hurting the hobby they supposedly love.

My local theater does suck. They did redo the seating during the pandemic and the concession is ok.

Recent trips were for Pearl, Crawdads, Dungeons and Dragons, Across the Spiderverse.

I can't really get too excited because I can see the seam in the screen and usually there's a few damaged areas too which I can ignore until they end up on a characters face for example. The floor is flat and the screen is mounted high enough to see and in the case of my most recent trip for Spiderman the ceiling is white acoustical tiles (which can be purchased in black ... it wouldn't take long to upgrade).

There's a good theater but it's a day trip. If I lived in a place with up to date theaters I would surely go much more often.

My local AMC finally re-opened their IMAX auditorium after a 4 month remodeling. I am seeing Mission Impossible there next Tuesday afternoon. This weekend I'll be trying catch Insidious: The Red Door.

Watched Pope's Exorcist the other day and that was fun. I watched Batman:The Doom that Came to Gotham on 4K disc last night and that was super cool, because it was HP Lovecraft meets Batman.

Never purchased titles on VHS and very few on Beta because I had LD. Did purchase many of the titles released on D-VHS D-Theater.

IIRC the following would have been a big fail in the the days of OTA TV. Was not that uncommon to see 8 to 10 million viewers of a episode of Criminal Minds.

Samba TV: Ratings Strong for Prime Video’s ‘Jack Ryan’ Season 4 Debut Despite 7% Drop
Quote:
By comparison, 1.3 million U.S. households watched the season 3 debut episode resulting in a 7% decline between the S4 and S3 premieres. Of the top 25 largest designated market areas, Seattle over-indexed the most (+92%), followed by Boston (+56%) and Detroit (+34%).
