Japan RRR Blu-ray from Twin (Japan)

Twin has released Indian smash-hit RRR on a 2-disc Blu-ray in Japan with DTS-HDMA audio tracks in Telugu and Japanese.
Unfortunately, it's rental-only.

The press release doesn't list a retail version of the Blu-ray.

Disc specifications

This is legit.

I saw these pics on Twitter from a Japanese video store with the official Blu-ray and DVD releases of RRR stocked up.
The amount of copies that are available doesn't lead me to believe this will be rental-only. What a strange decision if it's true.
It also isn't listed on Amazon.co.jp. How will we get our hands on this?

[Show spoiler]
Those look like Japanese rental copies. Occasionally, Japan used to release certain titles on DVD as rental-only, but I've never seen them do a rental-only on Blu-ray before, usually there is always a retail Blu-ray and the discs are identical, although years ago they used to do different rental Blu-rays with no extras, or things like that.

In this case, I wonder if the Indian licensor complained about having Japanese Blu-rays available for import into India, undermining their domestic digital sales. The irony is that even rental copies tend to end up for sale on Japanese auction sites.

I'd really like a copy of this... does anyone have a source for acquiring one of these "rental" copies, a new one if possible?

It completely baffles me that this film hasn't been released otherwise.

Default RRR in 4K UHD & BD

RRR seems to be coming officially from Twin in 4K UHD & Dolby Atmos on October 21, 2024.
Its like a dream to see Telugu title I love to get in 4K & Atmos .

Amazon JP is not taking international orders for Special editons, we can order the single disc editions tough. Hopefully it gets resolved soon.

RRR Ultimate Edition 4K UHD + Blu-ray + Vocal Collection & Original Soundtrack CD (5-disc set)

So I hadn't really followed this and been aware that the theatrical was 2:39 or 2:35, quick Google search is unclear on exactly what it's supposed to be.

So on Netflix it was 1.90:1.

On the Twin site, it says "1920x1080p / 16:9 / Scope size" which is somewhat confusing, but I assume that means it is indeed going to be scope.

After I've experienced an open matte of a movie on my projector, a tighter theatrical aspect ratio almost always feels cramped to me afterward. Expanded aspect ratios always feel more immersive to me. Of course there are caveats to this. If it's really just opened up and doesn't lose anything on the sides, that's ideal. But if they start to crop the sides, that's less ideal. And of course either way, it is changing the intended framing and composition.

I'll have mixed feelings about losing the big feeling in some scenes where expanding the top and bottom really open up the scene. But on the other hand I assume it's the original vision of the director, so, I guess that's that.

Both aspect ratios are included. UHD will be IMAX/16:9 and the BD will be scope.

Oof. So there's no Blu-ray non-HDR of the non-scope for those who want the Blu-ray format, and no 4K of the scope for those who want the 4K format, and if you're willing to accept the different versions, there's no simple Blu-ray + 4K combo pack, you have to buy them separately or get the insanely expensive deluxe release.

Seems rather unfortunately convoluted. Sigh

Well, at least it's a definitive answer. Thanks for finding and posting the info!

in fairness, japan is very much a market of expensive deluxe physical media releases (my PFP might clue you in).

also, I wouldn't be surprised if someone else picks this up for a north american disc release soon

Thanks for the correction. Totally forgot about the Apu Trilogy as it has a Criterion blu ray release. I didn't realise that Dharma Productions is supporting physical media outside India. Let's hope others follow suit.

I bought Dangal from Amazon Japan. It was a Disney release there but had a DTS HD track. I watched it with external subs support on the UB820. With Telgu, I'll need English subs but really wish a Hindi dub was available on this release.

What is the vocal collection? Is it a dialogues recording like what Sholay had? How is that going to make any sense for a Japanese audience?

Lionsgate is the US and UK distributor for the film, and they're putting out the physical release.
